Fisher gold bug?

Hi reltolbert, I too have purchased Cabelas GB and like it so far. Due to a medical problem I won't get to use it for another month or so. I went out to a local park and picked up over 70 coins (all clad) in 2 days. I found the depth to be good and machine quiet and stable. I also want to get out to Gold Basin area for gold and Meteorite hunting.

Tim,

I lived in the Metro Phoenix area from 1976 - 2002, then retired and moved up here to North Idaho
because of Skin Cancer problems.
About 20 years ago, I prospected for Gold in the Lynx Creek area near Prescott, AZ. I had a Tesoro Lobo
metal detector and Gold pans to find the Gold. I had more luck panning for the gold. The metal detectors
20 years ago were not very good compared to the Hi-Tect Detectors that are used today. I wish I could
go back there to Lynx Creek with my Gold Bug now. I'm sure I would find the Gold flakes and small nuggets.
For Meteorites, you might want to buy an 11"DD Teknetics Omega Coil for your Gold Bug, which I ordered for myself, to
find the Meteorites at greater depths. However, both Coils will do the job because many of the Meteorites
are on the surface too. You should do well. Good luck.

One of our Bloggers ( azsh07 ) who lives in Arizona, compares the Gold Bug favorably to the Fisher 75 metal detector
since he owns both detectors.

I retired also and mistakenly moved back here from Cal. And they just cut a nickel size plug from top of my head to remove a squamus cell cancer. Anyway I will be going back to the coast for summer soon. I want to get the omega 11" DD, but I have concerns about the mismatch on resonant frequencies, since the omega coil is designed for 7.8 khz. If the Q factor is off you will usually lose depth. I talked to Dave Johnson on the Teknetics forum and he says they are aware of it and will be monitoring it and if need be they might produce an aligned loop to 19 khz. Let me know how your omega coil works when you get it. In the meantime I'm going to research possible after market coils.

Tim,

As I mentioned above, one of our bloggers, azsh07 bought the Teknetics Omega 11"DD for his Gold Bug and it works fine except for the ground balancing numbers and the ground phase numbers are off about 7 or so. The depth is comparable to his f75 in boost mode.

I would say that I am 99% positive that the GB numbers are off due to the fact that the coil is made for a lower freq. unit. Just be aware that just because the coil is not made for that frequency doesn not always mean it will have problems.
Back in the day I think tesoro used to make, and still does, what was referred to as dumb coils. They worked on a range of machine frequencies. This would be the ones for the Cibola/Vaquero,Tejon,Lobo ST. The Lobo operates at a different frequ than the other 3 units but...coils still work.
I am not the definative expert on coils by any means but....do not fret at the moment about the frequency mismtach. It so far is not an issue. Just depends on the coil and how the receive and transmit are wired in respect to each other if I remember correctly as to whether there will be a serious issue or not.
Now Whites coils were ones that if they were not an exact match would not work...infamous 4B coils for older Blue Box 6000 DI series would not work on the new 6000 Pro's. They would never GB at all. Always positive GB no matter what.

Hi azsh07, I'm 99% sure you are right about the freq. And like Dave J. said it should work well. But what I've been saying is well is not perfectly tuned, and they should not be cutting corners to save a nickel. If they would just make a totally tuned coil/machine the depth would probably surpass the LTD's....I guess I just answered my own question. LOL..I don't known if you were following the Teknetics forum thread where Dave J. says they are designing a totally new type coil for the GB platform, but had no projected dates. Let be know how that 11" DD works out in field. I really want one, but still want to gather more data.

:poke:Has anyone else bought or got a Gold Bug SE? I just want to compare notes becasue I have never owned a detector befor and kinda wonering how I will adapt to it.:poke:

I've had one on order with Kellyco since 5/3/10 and they called me that it is ready to ship but I will not be able to use it for a couple more weeks, at least, due to family matters. Know that isn't what you were looking for as a response but just thought I would let others know they are in and shipping.:detecting:
