Ron is my brother Mike. My F5 runs quite as a church mouse with the settings I recommended, no chirping, beeping or noise at all unless I put my coil over a high disc target.

Thanks I will try that if my detector let's me! I sure your thinking what. Went out today, was messing around a creek in the water for a few , went up the bank and it started making a lot of noise and flashing all kinds of reading. So I changed frequency thinking that might help, no tryed to ground balance checking for clean area with pinpoint, when I did that it started flashing-- - -- lines and beeping, stopped tryed again , same thing. I held it up head high and the display was jumping all over, and beeping not stop. I have no idea what to do, took batteries out and now I'm just lost. Do anyone know anyone at fisher? I think the coil has a leak at the connecter, but what do I know! Thanks for the support,

Reviewing since I got , it seems like something's been of since I got it. First start up its suppose to flash the serial number on display, it didn't. I don't know what to do, send it back , or try to find a rep around me.

First your were talking about after the rain and now the creek, that tells me you may be getting water in the coil.

Any chance you could find somebody close by that you could try another coil?

No Ron I wished I knew someone. I have tryed to find someone in my area, Really within200 miles, no luck. This probably sounds silly, but I've had a fan blowing on coil all weekend. Going to check Monday and see what happens. Will let you know , thanks for the concern.

Better yet set it out in the hot sun. For night time a small heater blowing on it. The fan will not do much for the inside of the coil.

Maybe somebody will see your post and offer up a coil to send you to try for a round trip postage. I don't have a F5 anymore or I would.

No, bought new about 3wks ago. Tried a fan to dry, didn't help. Trying low heat for a day or so. Called Fisher 3 times, no callbacks. Really thought Fisher was good with problems, I was wrong. Need to send back, so far can't get a reply from them. Thanks

Contact your dealer and see if he can get something going.

Just thought I update, what's going on. First just want to thank Ron & Mike and everyone else for your help. This forum has really been a blessing. Ron thank your brother still looking 52 for me, called dealer , gave me number, called for 3 days left messages no reply. Your brother posted a number, first time I called they listened to problem, told me it had to come in for repairs. Mailed it out Thursday. Just sent the coil & controls. While I was taking coil cover off I noticed a very small hole. Don't know what you call it when plastic is injected, but the hole kinda sticks out a little. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. Now all I can do is impatiently set and wait......... Rhanks Dan

I would say your detector will be checked out and on it's way back with a new coil in 2 or 3 days after they get it.

What coil came on your detector package? The 11"DD coils are the ones that were having the leak problems a few years back and they started putting a sealer on all the seems.

When you get you new coil give it a good looking over before you stick it in the creek. LOL

If you get into nugget hunting like you said, you will most likely want to get a 5" coil. You will get better sensitivity on the smaller gold nuggets, the 10 pounders will show up using any coil.

I can't wait to hear your report when your detector comes back. You get to start all over again.

I agree with you for the most part the forum members seem to really take a interest in somebody just getting started and asking questions. Soon you will be a seasoned, and helping others.

Most of us have sent a detector or 2 back for repairs.

So how y'all doing? So I finally got my 5 back , and I'm having to basically start over learning the machine. Which is great because it's working right. Ron it was that little pin hole in the coil. The tech guy at fisher, Felix said it was messed up from the day I got it. It acts completely different. Just wanted to thank you and your brothers for all y'alls help, and everyone on the forum. Have been busy so I haven't had a lot of time to hunt, but I'm spending the whole weekend out swinging. The only thing that would make it better is if I had two brothers to go with. LOL will let you know how it goes. Dan

Good to hear all is okay now, it has been a while and I was wondering how it turned out.

Something like that sure messes with learning curve.

Good luck this weekend,

Ron in WV

When your just general hunting is it better to be in all metal or o disc. I kinda understand how disc works, just trying to figure out where I need to be and why. I listen and dig every hit to learn. I'm getting really good at digging holes! LOL

It all depends on what your hunting and where your hunting. If the area your hunting is full of trash then all "ALL METAL" will drive you crazy, you'll be hearing and digging every few inches and that gets old quick.
Since I'm basically a coin Hunter I like using the "DISC" mode to help me cover more ground and save time by not digging so many targets, how much DISC is a personal choice and you'll probably get different opinions on that. Personally I'm looking for silver coins so I run my disc at 65 since most all silver coins will come in higher than that even when they are deep.
Now relic hunting is a whole different story, these guys usually run very low disc, probably even ALL METAL is a common choice for them.
Also some people like a noisy detector, myself I like a quite machine until it hits a good target.
Really there's no right way or wrong way to set up your disc in general, I'm glad we have the options of setting them up to fit our own personal likings.

Yeah, good advice in this thread. You can turn down your settings quite a bit after a rain on that F5. my Fisher F2 was a beast after a little rain, and that's because it didn't need to work as hard. If your F5 is going nutso, turn thresh and possibly even gain down, down, until it goes quiet and then slooooowly, turn them back up until you get a quiet but stable ride.
