Decided on the Equinox 900

Interesting. Thanks for sharing that info...

Steve
I just tried tightening the cams a little more. I did get it to stop twisting. The cam is almost touching when closed in order to keep it from twisting.

I did about 45 minutes of testing in my garden when I got home today. I tried the 800, 900 and Deus II. All with 11in coils.
This was depth testing only.
Deep High Conductor on Deus II. Reactivity 0.
Park 1 on 800 and 900. Reactivity 3. It was as low as I could go and still have what I consider a usable signal. The Deus II was still as fast or faster at 0 in my opinion.
The other programs on the Equinox do not give me a good ID in my opinion. This is on deep coins and relics. 10 inches or better.
What did I find out?
I saw no appreciable difference in depth performance between all three detectors.
But the tones definitely go to the Minelabs. Again, on deeper targets.

My targets were, a nickel, dime and quarter at 10 1/2 to 11inches. One three ringer at 13 inches and one at 15.
All three detectors gave a digable signal on all targets. On the coins I could raise the coil approximately 4 to 5 inches above the ground and still get a good tone and ID.
On the 13 inch three ringer I could only raise it approximately 2 to 3 inches.
On the 15 inch three ringer, I didn't get as good of a signal as on the other targets and I lost the signal unless the coil was almost on the ground.
I can't explain it but swinging the 900 felt better than the 800.
I was in a 5 tone program on the Equinox machines and pitch on the Deus II. I tried other tones on the 900 but the machine wasn't as stable in my opinion.

So it does seem like the shaft on the 900 is better. Hopefully it won't leak.
Hopefully the coil won't break.
The arm cup is definitely better.
But as far as depth performance I don't see any difference.
I hope to do separation test tomorrow.
Of course this is all just my opinion.

I did tighten the thumb screws. I will try tightening them more tonight, but I thought I had the cams pretty tight. I hope it doesn't happen but I can imagine someone breaking those cams trying to get them tight enough that it doesn't twist.
That doesn't sound so good.

Very interesting. The good news -- you got it tight. The bad news -- you don't have much more room to tighten further. Hopefully, you will never need to...

That’s a cool perk for your service!

I got mine yesterday. Took 4 hours to change.
I did a quick run through my test garden, I think it may be deeper than the 800 by a little. It will definitely give a two way signal with good ID on my 10 and a half inch dime. I'm pretty sure the 800 will only hit it one way. I will do some testing tonight against the 800 and Deus II.
The shaft will twist even when tight, and the shaft to coil fit is very tight, a little too tight in my opinion.
Nice I just got mine from UPS a half hour ago. Been waiting downstairs all day so I wouldn't miss him lol. Hopefully the performance capabilities, are in some ways a little better than the 800.

In my test today it did beat the 800 slightly on depth and by a long shot on separation. But that was only one test.

One thing I was extremely disappointed in, was the way BIgboyshobbies packaged my detector for shipping. The box my 900 was shipped in, was almost the exact same size, of the equinox box itself. Their was zero amount of bubble wrap, or anything inside the box to protect the detector from shipping damage. The equinox box has a slight amount of damage, on one of the corners. But when you're spending the kind of dough, these machines cost, you would expect a little bit of thought in protecting the $1,100 machine from shipping damage. WTF BBH

I totally understand your disappointment. My 900 was shipped in the same type of box. But I'm almost sure it's not the dealers that pack and ship, it's the distributor.

I just hope it holds up over time.
I like everything to be inline and stay that way.
I'd take a piece of 150 grit sandpaper and roughen the interior of the clamps to better grip the texture of the carbon fiber shafts.

mine was drop shipped from the distributor.

Do they sell the 900 without the 6" coil in a package ?
Anyone have a link if so.

No

I hear yah.----Nothing worse than an out of line coil or a loose shaft.
Huh' I was just thinkin' as I sometimes do. Maybe my EQ800 shaft is out of line. This would explain why I am always going in circles. :)

I don’t think they do, I’ve looked everywhere for one, without the 6” coil when I was buying mine, couldn’t find one anywhere without it.

I would sure consider one except I have the Legend and they're too close for me to spend double on the 900

I've been swinging an XTerra 705 since Minelab came out with them about 13 or 14 years ago. It's a good machine but the technology that went into it has been surpassed by leaps and bounds. It's been around the block a time or two so it wouldn't sell for much in the current market that'll soon be flooded with used Nox 600 & 800 machines. It'll make a good loaner to get a newby interested in detecting.
I've watched a ton of YouTube videos of the Manticore, XP Deus II, Nokta Legend, and the Nox 600, 800, 700, & 900 as well as downloading and studying the user manuals for all of them.
The Legend was my initial choice mostly due to it's current price but there are enough negative reviews to send up a red flag. The Deus II seems a bit complicated and the Manticore might have a few issues o work out. The Nox 600 & 800 got ruled out for their build quality issues. The 700 is a stripped down version like the 600 so I went for the 900.
I ordered it from a dealer in cowboy country using the military discount and got it for $934.15, free shipping, free Minelab hat, finds bag, and carrying case for the machine. The Cowboy dealer doesn't charge sales tax and for me that's the equivalent of another 8% off the MSRP. I'm looking forward to putting it through it's paces when it arrives.
I think I might wait for Nox 1200 to come out . lol-- In the meantime ,Im satisfied with nox 800 . I wont be running to the nearest dealer to get the latest . Some of you guys must have 10 detectors . $$$ - mike

John, the 6 in. comes in the box packaged from the factory. If it is cost concerns, sell the 6. A lot of people would love to have one. Me personally, I have not had the stock coil on the 900 yet. That 6 in. is like a laser, more stable and not much loss on depth.
As far as the box's go, I hear you .Would be nice to see a little more protection on the packages but I have to say I have bought 2 800s in 2018. One dropped shipped and one from a dealer, and now a 900 with just the cardboard outer box and had no issues. And recently sold one of the 800s, shipped the same way and it arrived in good condition. Baring a forklift running over one in the warehouse I think they will be fine. My two cents. Mark
