Cibola/Golden U MAX ...Fare about the same on depth today..

Hello Tesoro Comrades,
I will no longer view Tesoro as NOT being a deep recovery detector, Both my Golden U MAX and my friends Cibola each responded to a 9" inch buried wheat penny in his test bed operating with 3 o'clock sensitivity.
Then, We went to a school to hunt the ball field for gold jewelry, clad and deep older coins. My Golden U MAX managed to hit on 3 deep wheat pennies and a deep 1946 nickel along with 13 more nickels including many tiny bits of foil and low conductor trash which is common for gold jewelry hunting.
I believe the added on ground balance mod to my Golden U MAX is the main reason the unit is achieving this superb depth. Needless to say I'm impressed with the 4 tone Golden U MAX. Even at 3 o'clock sensitivity the Golden U MAX operated smooth enabling me to search for both deep old coins and gold jewelry.
The picture shows the Cibola to the left with the Golden U MAX in the center and my trusty two tone Teknetics Turbo to the right, I've been using my Teknetics Turbo for coin and gold jewelry hunting but now will change over to the Golden U MAX from this day forward.
Any others out there with the same positive results I'm getting with my unit using the Golden U MAX?
Thanks and Happy holidays,
Paul (Ca)

It's interesting to hear that your Golden uMax gets such depth, particularly with your added GB. I'm interested in getting a GB added to my Golden. One source who I was advised that offered such mods says he no longer does them, and I believe the factory doesn't offer such a service either. Does anybody know who I might contact that currently does perform adding a GB to a Goldem?

I never got a dime 6 inches deep with any other Tesoro, but I got several in the 6 to 8 inch range with the Golden and that was using the 7 inch ShadowX2 coil. If I were buying a Tesoro tomorrow it would be another Golden.

Hello Ozzie,
My used unit already had the GB mod when I bought with a smaller black box attached to the left side of the housing, I removed the black box and inserted the GB pot inside the housing.
If you can find someone to change your unit over to the GB mod you'll be very pleased with it's results, Checking the Ground balance out in the field while hunting is so simple and quick.
Happy trails, Paul

Thanks JB for your view with the Golden U MAX with the added on GB, I can see your view as to wanting a Golden U MAX again, The 4-tone feature helps the user be more selective out in the field.
In my case, I was able to knock out zinc pennies while still getting about 95 percent of the gold jewerly range conductors and high coins.
Thanks again, Your comment confirms the ground Balance mod enhances the Golden U Max's performance as we noticed on my unit.

I would like to try a Golden one day, and add manual GB. Since I dont use notch, do you think removing the notch dial and adding the GB pot would work? I havent been inside one and dont know if there is enough room, whatcha think?
HH Kevin
PS I miss your posts on the Baron forum, are you going to try another Baron with the new CoinTrax chip? Its going to rock!!!! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Merry Christmas

Hello Kevin, I own the Baron and had added the Coin Trax module to it. I felt it did no good at all, and so I sold it and tried the Pro Hunter module. It works great, and its notch ability is super. It can literally shave nickles from out amongst pulltabs. With the Deep Hunter module, which I later added, I must say it is an extremely DEEP unit, BUT, it's also very HEAVY, and that's what I find discouraging about it. I hear the new models, with plastic bodies, are much lighter. That's the reason I like my Golden; it's light in weight and its notch ability is pretty good. Adding a GB for that extra depth should make it, overall, a great metal detector. I suspect it's a waste of time to call the factory and asking them about adding a GB to it (?).
Perhaps I'll try a call to them anyway....

Don't waste your money calling the factory they won't do it. The way the pots are arranged theres no room anyway without removing something, which some folks have done..The tuner that has been used is the standard 3 3/4 turn unit Tesoro uses which I really don't care for. Its OK, but thats about it as far as I am concerned. No room in the T to change that one for something with a different value either, Paul is going to look around and see if he can come up with some different pots...HH...Geo

The problem with the other GB 10 turn pot when I inserted it into the housing was a little too big, It brushed up against the coil connector and circuit board. No room for error and the face plate screws couldn't be fully tighten which would have damaged the circuit board.
Now, Using a smaller 50K pot allows the circuit board to be placed where it should while still leaving enough space between the coil connector and circuit board. Note the black electrical tape wrapped around the pot which prevents contact with the circuit board and coil connector leads.
The only difference is the pot is a regular 50K turn pot not the 50k 10-turn pot, still works great and can still dial in the Ground balance to a fine wire.
Turns out I have 13 more 50k pots on hand, Lucked out.
Now, Kevin brought up a neat idea of placing the GB pot in place of the Notch control and placing the Notch pot as shown in the pic. Later on will switch both so the GB will be on the face plate instead, Since I don't use the notch feature this will allow Ground balancing much easier.
Please don't attempt this mod unless you fully understand what's in store, The drilled hole has to be in the perfect location so the pot can't brush up against the coil connector leads or circuit board. No room for error inside this tiny housing.
Merry Christmas, Paul (Ca)

Hello Kevin,
Good to hear your voice again, Long time since we last chatted. I need to find the Baron forum again, Upgraded to a new computer and still haven't located some of the forums.
I like your idea of switching the GB pot and notch pot, it'll work and will do this switch here shortly. Since I don't adjust the notch feature I'll place the notch control under the housing and the GB pot on the face plate instead.
If I remember correctly you should be snowed in right now in Canada in your area <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Merry Christmas,
Paul (Ca)

When you return from your trip we'll apply the mod to your unit, Since we now know the regular 50K pots fit inside the housing I'll try to locate smaller size 50K 10-turn pots.
Merry Christmas,
Paul (Ca)

Sounds good Pau, moving stuff around to suit, matters not...HhGeo

Hey Paul, maybe if you put the GB where the threshold is there would be more room for the pot???
I was thinking of completely removing the notch as I just dont use it. Would it be possible to take the notch toggle out and replace it with a manual retune/auto all metal toggle, or am I asking too much?:)
Looks good, thanks for the post and pic!!

Heres a link to the Baron forum

I also enjoy using the ProHunter although the GoldTrax is my favorite module. The CoinTrax was my least favorite module, however I think this is about to change. George Payne has just released a new computer chip for the CoinTrax which is going to drastically change the CT. It now has memory so it now remembers the last settings, an all new feature called "Deep Search Mode", adjustable all metal audio and visual ID and a bunch of great new features. I cant wait to get the new chip!
Heres a couple of links for you, this one is for George Paynes site which explains the chip and has ordering info etc.

And this link is to a Baron site made by JB(MS)
which has more info on the chip plus a bunch of other Baron info.

Youre right about the weight, actually its just a matter of very poor balance. I'm just about finished modding mine on a staight pole with the box mounted at the rear by the cuff. It feels like a completely different machine, although its a bit tough getting to the controls, might have to run a remote all metal switch. Paul also modded a Baron or two in this configuration and can testify how much better it feels.
For a quick fix, I tie-wrapped the box at the rear of the stock pole and it worked great.

Actually we had a decent early winter as I was able to hunt a month longer than last year, but its very cold now, not much snow (yet) but the ground is frozen solid.
On warmer days I might get out and hack a few targets out of the farm fields.
Tis the season for research and modding <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Merry Christmas!

I know I attached a picture to my last post...dont know where it went, I'll try it again....

My main difficulty with the Coin Trax was that of the notching. The preset segments were spread in such a way that, when notching was engaged, way too many pulltabs were detected as nickles. THe Pro Hunter module alowed for finer disc, so that very few tabs would be detected. Upon installng the Deep Hunter module, with its own battery pack of 8 AA's (in addition to the prime 8 AA's pack), it just plain got HEAVY.....especially with that heavy duty metal body. I suppose that's one of the reasons I like the VDI meters.....preset segments, for me, cover too wide a swath of items. Otherwise, the Baron's a terrific unit, and like I say, it goes DEEP. George Payne's genius is still at it, I see. His talents have brought a lot of innovations to the technology of this hobby. I might have to take a look at his new inspiration which you just mentioned.

Thanks for the Baron page, Now I can visit and catch up on past post.
Hey! Your idea of replacing the Threshold with the GB pot works great, Now the threshold pot is hidden inside the lower right with the knob poking out underneath the housing as show in the picture. This set-up allows the mod with more room to play with inside the housing, Neat set-up.
Also, You mentioned of never using the Notch feature. I don't either put do use it for checking zinc pennies on the Golden U MAX, With the notch knob turned fully clock wise and by flipping the notch switch to "wide" zinc pennies will blank out "no sound." This allows the user to avoid zinc pennies when gold jewelry hunting still enabling the user to capture low conductors and high coins.
Now, Just need to make a decal "GROUND BALANCE" and replace the paper one I temporary made.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas,
Paul (Ca)

Looks good, I had seen a couple of units where the notch was done away with etc but I think you have it there is a use and the 10 turn tuner will make this unit usuable with all of the coils Tesoro has available...Geo

Great job as usual Paul. Good idea putting the Threshold out of the way like that and you still have notch if you need it. The GB shouldnt get bumped accidently either being up top like that.
Now I know it can be done, I might have to get me one of those Goldens <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Thanks and Happy Holidays!
