Cibola and Vaquero ... are they different?

Willee - Texas

Well-known member
If you ground balance mod a Cibola is it the same detector as the Vaquero?

Are there any other differences?

Willee

i have used both and my answere is, yes they are the same, "BUT" .
Dont believe the sales pitch, " A GB mod on a Cibola makes it faster and deeper than a Vaquero".
What you get is a modified cibola that operates like a vaquero, but now you have no warranty.

Here's a good link with some information. Some say there are differences, but it's not 100% confirmed.

Well you wouldn't get a warranty buying used anyway.

Tesoro honors warranties on even used, (most of the time anyway).
But one that has a mod, not a chance..

I sent in a Silver Sabre uMax a few years back for repair and since I was not the original owner, they didn't honor the warranty for me. They charged me for the repair.

I know they have honored warranties in the past, but based on my experience, they no longer do so.

Thats very odd, I have purchased several used models and never been charged for a tuneup or repair. I did get a new faceplate for my Diablo and was charged $25.00. Not a big thing for such a great company.

I recently took a older unit in for repair to Tesoro and they would not replace a broken strain relief and a cracked coil housing without charging me for it.

The Cibola and the Vaquero appear to have a different programmable device plugged in. They are labeled differently. Don't know what is different but could speculate that there are some filtering differences to allow the fixed ground balanced Cibola to be more forgiving across varying ground mineralization. The circuit cards appear to be identical except the Cibola has a surface mount trim pot for ground balance and the Vaquero does not have the circuit board pot but brings wires to a pot on the front panel for ground balance. Makes for an easy mod to add ground balance to the Cibola.

in more than a couple of Tesoros for repair, tuneups, and minor whatever, and all but 2 being 2nd, 3rd or more owners, no warranty card etc. and don't remember ever being charged for anything. Just recently sent my Shadow X2 coil back to Tesoro for a repair and was not charged anything. Tesoro does state that if there is a problem that appears to have been caused by carelessness,or abuse, and for certain any modification, that they reserve the right to consider a charge. That is likely to be what is happening to bring about a charge for some things and of course that is the chance we all take in buying used, and we certainly can't expect Tesoro to cure all our ills. Hey, they have, and always have had, the best service that is to be had in all of the industry, and that is a proven fact when you get to the truth of the matter.

I'm with Charles Tesoro has the best service.... they take the time to talk over the phone too and actually give you answers to questions that most would'nt give you the time of Day for.....

Our lifetime warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for as long as it is owned by the original purchaser. The warranty excludes batteries, damage caused by leaky batteries, cable breakage due to flexing, wear of the searchcoil housing, and leakage cause by the condition of water seals on underwater detectors. Also excluded are instruments which have been abused, altered, or repaired by an unauthorized party.

They probably won't repair a broken strain relief or coil on an older unit, tell you the truth I wouldn't expect em to on an old unit. In Fact if I sent in one of my used units (I have 4) and they felt I had to pay for the repair, I wouldn't really gripe because:
#1 I've never had to send one in in over 15 years of detecting, and used units are all I've really ever owned! ( I buy nice cared for equipment, & take care of it myself!)
#2 They state in their warranty it's really for people who bought the units NEW from them.
#3 It's their Company/ Their discretion on whether or not to charge for a repair.

Look the Gifford family has always been kind enough to make repairs on most all detectors that come back with a problem, If it seems to be abused or something, it's their call.
I don't look for anything bad in the company when all they've done is good for so many years by servicing even most used detectors ( If they look/seem to have been taken care of.)
I thank em, and take my hat off to em for making such a great detector, and giving so much to this hobby we all love & share.
You don't and probably won't ever see a notice from Tesoro, saying "we will no longer be able to service the following model detectors"....

This is a recent Minelab notice....
"Serviceability of Old Equipment"

Due to the unavailability of service parts, we can no
longer support the repair of the following machines:

Goldseeker 15000
GT 16000
Eureka Ace Dual
FT 16000
Eldorado MKII
Sovereign
Excalibur

Did they charge you for the repair or was the charge for return shipping?
Was it a defective part or was it an owner broken part?

oh I agree Minelabs are great machines... never meant to rub anyone else the wrong way , but dang it gets old to see someone whine about service when it's always been top notch. Minelabs makes a good detector just like all the other major brands. but to throw out a notice that they aren't going to be able to service such a big list of their most popular detectors. Wow what does that say to the customer? I don't know how long it's been since the notice came out but I just recently saw it myself and it definately swayed me from ever buying one new. as far as getting service. parts availability is a big deal to me.... if it breaks and there's no parts you're stuck with a broke detector... am I right? They do make a good detector though just all all the major companies do.
Sorry if I ranted a little too much ... no hard feelings,
Jay

Jay Im sorry, that was a harsh response I made.

If you look into it a bit more you will see that statement was amended(by minelab).

I do wish another manufacturer would come out with something that worked as well as them on salt water beaches, for those of us that hunt those alot there are just not alot of choices.

no hard feelings Jay.

Has anyone done an air test and compared the modded Cibola with the Vaquero? I am trying to decide if I want to mod my Cibola or get a Vaquero.

I guess not.

Oh well, I just ordered a used Vaquero from a vendor listed here, so I get to see how the V can do. Can't wait to try it.

Now mod the Cibola and compare the 2 side by side. I have both, a modded Cibola and a stock Vaquero. My Cibola blows away the Vaquero.
