Can anyone tell me the difference between the Explorers

Hello There,I'm a water hunter of the past 10 years in Miami Beach but my roots are in Coin Shooting in PA where I grew up.I've always wanted a Explorer for trips home / local Parks and recently was offered a Explorer-S for only 350.00 w/ a alk pack.I guess my question is is there any significant difference between the S,XS,II and Se.I would really appreciate your time and input. Thanks Joe

I use XS and only difference, on s no screen light, and something ells ,but detector is the same. from explorer 2 and SE ,SE pro some small difference but its again the same except coil. good luck

Basically from the XS to 11, the 11 registered on the meter a ferrous and digital number at same time with cosmetic changes with a improved lower rod and black armrest made out of harder plastic, 1/4 headphone jack... SE of course had the new coil...Personally feel the XS was arguably as good as any of them but improvements where made as new models came out..Never used the E-trac so no info on the newest model..

and that's the fact that the SE WILL ID in the all metal pinpoint mode.

No one ever seems to mention that...and I feel it is an invaluable tool and helps me greatly when deciding whether or not to dig a deep questionable target.

3 steps in deciding whether or not I dig a target.

#1 SOUND

#2 cursor flutter or placement

#3 cursor movement and placement when I switch to all metal pinpoint.

The ID'ing all metal pinpoint feature is found exclusively on the SE.

Some feel that the EX2 handles iron better than the SE...but it is just all in what your ears interperet.

The SE does have a slightly faster processor...but I notice no difference over the EX2.

Thanks for your responses! I guess I'll pick it up and give it a whirl. It seems that the only difference is in the pinpoint ID feature,no display back light, basic coil and slower SAT speed.Hopefully it will produce enough for an upgrade eventually :) I look forward to sharing my results with you all-Thanks again

That's an interesting thought on IDing targets Bryce. I'll have to give it a go.
I got to play around with a Pre production S Explorer last year down at The Miners Den (Parramatta,Sydney) last year (the Miners Den used to be owned by Minelab, but a readjustment a few year ago meant that it Went under the Coden name, thus giving some separation, and has now been sold all together now for complete separation from Minelab). The guys in the Factory down in Adelaide, found it and sent it up to the guys in Parra, just to get rid of it. It was a very basic detector compared to the later models, even the XS. It didn't have many of the options that the XS had. It was very much like comparing a Safari to an SE. Quite literally.
Mick Evans.
BTW. I was sorely tempted to buy it. Not because of it's ability, but it's place in detecting history. But I could justify the buy as I already had too many detectors and am trying to be a detectorist, not a detector collector. (It so hard not to be both!:inlove::shrug:)

Just be aware that this does not mean you will, in effect, get target ID down to all-metal depths, when using this cross-over mode. The depth at which the TID is triggered, will be no more, and no less, than the same TID disc. depth is. So for example: if you can get a whisper on a dime at 8 or 9", yet the all-metal mode goes to 10 or 11", you will simply get the TID still to the 8 or 9", and if it's beyond that depth, simply get an all-metal signal (no TID either way) for the final inch or two of that depth.

This is not a bad thing mind you! It can still be a useful thing. By having a signal on the utter fringe of detection range, often causes us to slow down, and cross-cross targets, to "try to bring them in". It is the same on various Whites, which have that cross-over mode too. I used to swear I could get deeper with that, but I could never "put my finger on why that was". Then it occured to me, that I was subconsciously being drawn towards all beep, double-checking them for accuracy, because the all-metal went deeper than the disc. So I would subconsciously find myself double checking and criss-crossing questionable signals, that perhaps I'd never have been drawn to, in straight disc. mode. So it's the same with the all-metal/disc. crossover on the SE.

Seems like everyone forgets about the numbers which is just another added tool to dig or not to dig...I may be the oddball but hunt with the numbers screen and along with the audio gives me my first impression of whats under the coil. Different strokes for different folks I guess and again whatever works..

GREAT point:thumbup:

The poster's original intent was to know of any differences in the explorers...so I just pointed out about the all metal pinpoint feature which is exclusive to the SE....then added how I use it.

As for digital or smart screen...I agree...whatever works for each of us. Some like to watch the flutter of the cursor while some like to see the flutter of the numbers.

Funny thing about that...I 100% prefer smart screen on the explorers ...but on the E-Trac I LOVE the number flutter.

I can't see the small smartscreen on the E-Trac anyway:cool:...and that might be part of the reason:)

The other reason is that the cursor movement and placement on silver and injuns' is completely different on the E-Trac...so I REFUSE to look at it in fear of it messing up how I've learned to watch what the cursor does on my Explorers:bouncy:
