Bulgin Buccaneer Micro Connectors

For those that have been using these for a while how dependable have they been? I am contemplating doing a bit of surgery on my Excal and would like to add waterproof plugs so I can switch out the coils. Any one have issues with leaks? Or performance issues due to the severed coil?

If I'm not mistaken those are the connectors OBN uses. Maybe do a search he had some great photos doing a coil mod on an Excall. Also check out docsdetecting.com there is some good information on installing a WOT on his site. Good luck and HH :minelab:

Have them on two excaliburs, great to change out the coils, They do not leak but in the saltwater it seems the signal leaks or I would say the connector is very sensitivity to the touch. Reworked them, filled one with RTV silicon other with 3m epoxy....seemed to help but still senstivity to ruff waves, and if you bump it. One thing, I do run my senstivity very high..10 to 11 ...........This winter I will be hardwiring all my coils back to the pods.........I used the Bulgins mini's on the headphone...no problems at all................all have been in saltwater.........they will stay on.............If you are a deep water hunter I would not put them on, but if you hunt the wet sand with waves fine.....Maybe someone eles that has them installed can chime in..think timmys has them...............And you may want to check Eric's connectors..he's in the water deep, alot.............

I made several modes on the excaliburs this past winter, from carbon fiber, copper shielding, new decals, amps, connectors, IP switchs, and many more..I may do a post on what worked for me once the season has wound down..........

I have them too and OBN is right, they make a false signal when a wave hits them or when they first enter the water. Once in the water they're fine if they stay underwater, if they are in and out they make a false signal. Still work though once you get used to what's causing the falsing..and no leaks in two years for me. My WOT crapped out so I may go back to hardwire.

The coil cable itself is unshielded, but one thing........ you are exposing the wire total from it outer rubber shell when you strip the wire and solder the pins...Good Point and something to think about. Otlew suggest dielectirc grease on the connection..will try before I tear them down this winter.......

Due to a small change in my hunting style coming in the next few years, and I just picked up my 5th Excalibur, I can now just hard wire them all,........And have one for each special need.......Dig send the info to Greg Saturday, olbaid, he's out digging Gold as I type so you should hear something this week..

I have the Bulgin Buccaneers on my blue 1000. Am using with 12X10 SEF, 8 BBS, 10 Tornado and 5 EXcellerator. I have no sensitivity problems whatsoever, in, out or halfway in saltwater/surf. The connectors work great! I do know there are some forum coil wiring posts that are wrong. So wired the Excal seems to work, but has problems in the AM mode. Perhaps your wiring is wrong or loose? How tight do you tighten plug? I did not solder mine, just used the set screws. Soldering can sometimes ruin plugs if too hot.

I had one leak, which had been tested statically in a bucket of water for 24 hours and hunted for several hours in fresh water with no issues.

It leaked in salt water in what amounts to the splash zone, no real depth, probably 6" of water at most. It was loaned to another while we hunted, when I took it apart it was clearly over tightened.

Over tightening may have caused some distortion of the the connector body, they aren't exactly stout. I wonder if the larger Buccaneer connectors (900 series) as opposed to the micros might be a better choice. I plan to try some dielectric grease as soon as possible.

I intend to contact Bulgin and see if they will comment on these issues.

Anyone still using the Bulgin connectors? I was curious to see how they were performing after extended use...
