    Sledding hill

I got out to a nearby sledding hill for a while yesterday afternoon. The snow was mostly melted off the hill but it was still snow & ice packed at the bottom. Hadn't been there long when a park employee stopped his truck and asked me if I would try to find some lost keys. So, I got sidetracked...

    Knocking out pull tabs

Hi daddyflea. Since gold rings, as well as other goodies, will VDI all through the tab ranges I don't notch out tabs anymore and just dig them to be sure they are tabs. Especially since I found a nice 10g mans 14k yellow gold wedding band with white gold trim that rang up a VDI of 49-50. I...

    Getting ready for the spring.

GS, thanks for the good luck wishes. Spring is right around the corner.....yippee! I'll be thinking about that as the snow, sleet, and freezing rain keep me in the house this weekend. On the bright side, if I can kick this sore throat and swollen tonsils, I can always hit the sledding hills...

    Penny spill

Hi all. Yesterday I stopped at a large partially snow covered wood chip playground for a little over an hour. The only coil I had with me was the 10x12 SEF so I couldn't get very close to the playground equipment. Near the bottom of one of the larger slides I got a huge signal bouncing around...

    super 12" coil

I think the Super 12 is a great coil with great coverage but it isn't my favorite to swing. It's heavy and not very well balanced. If your ground has much mineralization the 10DD might do just as well as the 12 as far as depth. If mild ground then the 12 should give better depth. They are both...

    Polar Plot or Sizing

I have to agree with Larry.

    Big Silver Ring

That is a very unusual and strange looking ring. I wonder if it may have had a dual purpose of some sort. Congrats on all the finds.....43 coins in an hour! That's a lot of digging! Maybe more goodies can be coaxed out of the ground with a bigger coil.

    A Few Recent Finds...

I try to stay far away from the holes and dirt mounds left by the critters. I don't want their activities to be confused with mine. After reading this thread I'm going to have to rethink my strategy. Seems like I could be missing out on some good finds.

    A little much?

Yes. Your eyes are the best discriminator.

    First outing with V3i

That's great! Gold and silver on the first trial run with your V3i! Congratulations. Now, go immediately and buy a lottery ticket!

    Robs Links

Darned shame to lose Rob's links. I probably relied on being able to refer to them too much. But still, so much valuable information...pfffht...gone?

    Monday & Tuesday V3i silver

That lake bed is producing some nice finds for you! Thanks for the photos. I hope that lake bed gives up more goodies. Jim

Saw your ready to retire Message Rob (IL) ...........

Rob, thanks for sharing your knowledge and your advice (as well as your patience). I hope to see you here often. Wouldn't be the same here without you. Good luck & happy hunting to you, Jim

    Tracking causes noisy operation

I think you're right Rob. The fellow I bought my V3i from did mention that it was too much for his 64 year old brain to comprehend. At the time I thought that attitude was silly. Just turn it on, select a program and start detecting....can't get much simpler. I like simple but I like the...

    Tracking causes noisy operation

Bruce, why do you think this is?

    Tracking causes noisy operation

I have always hunted in Autotrac. Then I put the DX-1 back on my V3i two weeks ago and had to go to Lockrac after ground balancing to settle things down in the trashy areas I hunt. Yesterday, using the SEF 10x12, it easily hit on a quarter at 11" & a dime at least 8" deep in a trashy area of a...

V3i vs DFX ( for those who have used both)

Same here. I still have my DFX (my wife now uses it occasionally) and I think it is a very capable machine. But, no comparison with the V3i in my opinion. Good luck with whichever one you decide to keep.

    NEW V3I USER

With those two small coils, depending on your ground conditions, it may be a struggle to get deeper than 5". Especially with the 4x6. If conditions are right I can get coins at 6" with the 5.3....maybe a bit more on quarters and tokens. Like Rob said, get to know how the settings affect...

    NEW V3I USER

You are right....you should be able to find coins much deeper than 5". However, in some places there are no coins deeper than 5" and in some places the ground and/or trash won't let it see coins at more than 5". Coil size can also be an important factor. Try burying some coins at 7 or 8 inches...

    "New" Old Lot...

Good eye! Sounds like a site worth going back to a few more times. BTW, what was the VDI on those marbles?
