Your best machine?

The only detector that ever impressed me was the Teknetics 9000/B. (I also had a Mark I, and an 8500)
Now I've have had other detectors that met the need and have done good, but their electronics didn't or don't thrill me.
Other than depth increase of the newer detectors and of course weight and compact packaging they fall short in about every other way.
The 9000/B Discriminated better,
Rusty bottle caps wasn't an issue,
You could really nickel pick better with the 9000/B
Here was the MAJOR downfalls to the units like the 9000/B.
BIG and heavy, (mine was hip mounted)
Took a massive about of power to run them, 14 AA batteries.
Limited depth to a real 5" to 6" of dirt.

Well, over the years, I have owned many many detectors....

The best one, in my opinion was the Bounty Hunter Time Ranger...Don't laugh...

The V4 version included a revision of the TID.

A side (and welcome) effetct was that the pulltab range did not signal...pulltabs. In Fact, every signal in the pulltab range was a potentially gold ring...The two years I used it, I found 43 gold items in the pulltab range...

I stupidly sold it to finance an Explorer 2, an I regret it.

Maybe I will re-buy the Titan version, it's worth it !

Cheers

I'm trying to understand what you are saying here. Are you saying that the Bounty Hunter Time ranger could

A) Tell gold apart from aluminum ? Or

B) Saying that it knocked out certain type tabs, while allowing in certain types gold rings ?

If it is option B, then: So too can the Explorer properly identify (ie.: reject) certain recurring tab types, yet .... at the same time, ID certain gold rings outside those TID zones.

It's no secret that ... since gold rings can ID all over the TID ranges, that .... logically .... some are going to get accepted EVEN while knocking out tabs. But I guarantee you, that there are a percentage of gold rings that will NOT be distinguishable from tabs. You will be missing a certain percentage of gold rings, when passing tabs, on any machine. And there will also be a punishing ratio of aluminum (can slaw, etc...) that will read exactly like those 43 gold rings you found, on any machine.

No matter which machine I try, I keep coming back to the Vaquero. So quiet, so relaxing, and so effective.

So far the best metal detector that I've owned is the Teknetics T2 Classic. I found my 1st silver coin with it. My second favorite detector was my Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505. In terms of most number of good finds, the 505 takes that honor. It was my first detector that really discriminated the trash from the treasure and that resulted in a renewed interest in metal detecting after a 20 year break from detecting. For a low cost detector the Pioneer 505 has plenty of features that a serious detectorist desires. The T2 is still new to me and I am still learning it's settings and fine tuning my metal detecting skills with it. But so far it's the deepest seeking metal detector that I've owned and goes deep enough to find the old silver coins in the parks that others before me have missed. Once I've mastered the T2 I believe that my trash to treasure ratio will increase and should surpass that found by the 505.

Saxon SM45 by far........no daft programs, good in iron and so simple.Great iron discrim too.

Compass Challenger X 80. A big ol lumber wagon by today's standards, but way ahead for the time. Still have the old girl, won't power up. I should look at getting it fixed

Classic. Discovery Electronics Treasure Baron Cointrax 2. I'll probably have and use one (or two) till I die.
Modern. Makro Multi Kruzer. A fantastic do-it all machine. At under $500 on the used market it's one of the best bargains out there.
And I agree with Simpsonslammer on the Compass X-80. One fine machine for its day. Can't say that I miss the weight or all those batteries though.

My answer would have to be from the early years to now. I will start with the Whites 5900 and then go to the Whites XLT then to the Minelab Sovereign's also include the Excalibur.. As we move forward to the Troy X5. And now the E-Trac and the CTX 3030 to the Equinox 800. I think something import to mention is the type hunting I do is Beach, Relic and coins. I still own all of the above except the Sovereign and Excalibur. I don't use all of them much but I do own and believe in them. Sorry I even use the GPX 4800 for Relic hunting. One machine will not cover everything for me.

My current best machine is my Teknetics T2 Classic. However, my all time favorite machine was my Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505. I had more fun with the Pioneer 505. It was my first serious metal detector that actually found lots of coins and good finds and was able to discriminate the trash from the treasure.
