Xterra pro = short coin hunt

KSDfisher77

Well-known member
Decided to take the Xterra pro & the EQX06 coil for a short coin hunt in the can slaw park. It done really well on park 1, recovery 2, sens. 18, 5 tones. The quarters I dug were at 8" & had a great tone & locked on at a VDI of 90. It had real stable VDI's today on my coins. I was hoping for a silver dime today, to test the xterra pro's VDI numbers. I have a feeling a silver dime will have the same vdi # as a clad dime. To me the copper penny, clad dime, & possibly silver dime need the VDI scale spread a bit.

My wife's XTP hits silver dimes at 82 VDI and clad dimes at 80 if that helps. Copper pennies also hit at 80 just to make life interesting 😎

Well it looks like the xterra is doing what it is supposed to do.

I started a thread in another forum about the xterra pro and a guy from Spain is killing it on his beaches. He has already found several gold rings with his.

It is a good unit for the money
Yeah this machine for the money is fairly amazing actually I think. It seems to hit fairly hard on round objects in general, which is good.
I dug a bunch of round copper tubing & such things today as well, they had great tone & solid VDI's so I dug.

Yeah my dimes I dug today were 80 & 82 VDI most were 80 that I recall thou. All my copper Penny's were 78-80 VDI. I took a silver dime with me to do a air test so to speak, and it locked on at 82-83. I'm really happy with this machine, mainly bought because of waterproof.

Nice hunt, lotta coins there. I really like the xterra pro, just enough settings to make a difference where it really counts, and like the picture you posted shows it will get the job done better than most. Congrats

You know this detector makes me smile😁 while yet pisses a guy off. It's a great detector & the part that makes a guy mad is it so good, how can they be selling it for $269. The more I use it, the more I like it. But the nickels have eluded me soo far. Thanks woodbutcher.

Nickles will hit somewhere down in the mid to upper twenties to low thirties depending on which frequency you're running, and they will have a familiar good clean coin sound to them. The average pull-tab will typically sound off a little higher, and the older ring-pull type will sound good enough that you have to dig 'em.

I’m thinking you’re just not getting over any nickels, they have that solid sound like the equinox and vanquish have too, no mistaking a nickel by sound. Although I’ve found most nickels in the 28- 32 ish range I have also found a few in well worn out areas with the numbers bouncing up into the 40s,but that tone was unmistakable.. Happened to me last night, nice nickel tone and bouncing from the 25 -40 but I knew by tone it was a nickel.. 6-7 inches down and I pulled out a old jefferson…Good luck… I also agree it makes you scratch your head how they made this machine so good for so little money

I took my X-Terra Pro out today... I think I'm making some simple mistakes... I deliberately set up exactly like KSDfisher77... I did not have his luck.. but I did have a couple of hick ups... I made a real short video passing over some targets in the parking lot... Just to get an idea of what the numbers will look like... I went out in the field for a little more than an hour... I absolutely love the pin pointer... It's dead on... I just wish it would show depth ( whites spoiled)... targets were all in the 6 inch range except the big piece of iron... It was about 8 inches deep... while digging for the big iron... I completely lost the target... Like a ghost... I re-ground balanced... And everything was back to normal... The big Iron and two small rusty glopps... all read in the 89-90 range... with the high pitch tone... I'm wondering if I missed some thing in the setup... Or may Be my soil is just that much different... It was surprisingly dry considering all the rain we've had... the 4 brass and aluminum targets were about in the numbers I expected them to be.... Then the clouds lifted... The sun came out... no breeze... and I was done.... I'm just not as spry as I think I am anymore.... :heh:

I'm not sure, but I think you might be having a couple things happening. Your numbers didnt look bad, but I noticed you were getting a double report off the sides of your search coil. I think that's due to how close the coil is over the coin & high sensitivity. I also think there was something in your asphalt/blacktop throwing your TID numbers off a bit. I'm hoping others will chime in as well. Maybe I'm wrong on my thinking & some1 will correct me. Great video btw!!!

I'm a true Mine Lab noob(1st one)... So If It's me doing noob mistakes... That's great... I'm ready to learn... There's plenty of room for improvement...

I'm a Whites guy & used a DFX & V3i & love them other than weight. I miss my pin point depth indicator too the Whites detectors use!! (Hint: Hint: Minelab add a pin point depth) It helps determining if there is multiple targets in the same hole. Btw I'm a Minelab newbie too!! Lmao now I want a 900. Someday maybe.

Here's a tip for both of you newbs; turn Tracking ON.
I honestly don't know why Minelab even makes it an option anymore. It should be ON all the time.

Personally, I wish that they would trade the manual ground balance for a Tracking Offset feature like we had with the 705.

In my experience hunting, the effects ground mineral, depth and corrosion can have clad and silver at times read the same and can put copper CENTS (there is no penny) right in there with them. Being able to discern
the difference is a nice luxury, but its not always there and we get surprised at times when we dig (and a nearby piece of metal makes it average out far different too. These best of all possible world scenarios can often be rare. How often you GB makes a difference too. It would be interesting to try different frequencies too, especially the higher ones and compare.

Yeah I havent played with the tracking button yet. I was just doing a manual ground balance every 20 minutes or so. I'm asking this cause I dont know. Could you ground balance & then change your ground balance # up or down to offset your tracking? Thanks.

I don't think that's how it works, but might be a good question for Minelab CS to ask the techs for us.

I also don't know how Minelab set up their GB on the new XT-Pro because I haven't used it. On the older series, the higher the number the milder the ground, which is opposite of most other detectors, but was done because they were referencing Ground Phase Angle, not a conductive/magnetic mineral level.

Yeah I'm not sure, like you said how Minelab set that up. I know if you do a manual ground balance with the Xterra pro & it locks on a said GB# you can use the (+) or (-) keys to take your GB numbers up or down. I thought I read somewhere to, that you could take the GB#'s up or down to help fight ground minerals & iron. I'm not sure which direction on the GB you would go, cause I havent played around enough with the Xterra Pro yet. Machine really has alot of features for a budget machine.

Just my opinion but if you run that machine past 19 sensativi you’re gonna get a lot of false signals. At least I do When I run it Hot.. no need to go past 18 ,it’s plenty deep and you’ll pull coins left and right. I run in park 1, sens at 18, 5 tones, speed setting on 2 and I touch nothing else..Those are easy setting but try them, I think the sens is your problem but give it a try..

Yeah I will run up to 20-22 on sensitivity, but you might get some falsing. I have been running park 1, sens 18, 5 tones, & recovery at 2. Real solid performer at them settings I agree.
