XLT

One of the best programable units around but do expect a learning period...Were one of Whites top sellers for close to 20 years until recently discontinued as the new kid on the block the V3 became their top of the line..which ought to tell you something...

Won myself an Spectrum XLT on Aussie Ebay.
In almost as new condition. Going to be interesting to see how this old legendary detector performs.

XLT arrived today in near new condition.
Preliminary testing indicates that it will be a keeper. Buckets of power and sensitivity plus enough adjustments to make this machine suitable for beginners to very advanced operators.

Ho Hum Yaaaawwnn... Hello wall...... G/Day Fisher, Howz tha XLT..... Seems to be very good.......Realy!, What's so good about it.....It has a lot of great features for an oldie...........Yeah!, wot kind ov feature?....... OH jus lots ov things yez wudn't unnerstan...........Try me, I am bery clebber?..... Naaa yez iz just a dumb wall wot needs a new coat ov paint.

 It seems most of the XLT users are on the XLT forum............http://www.findmall.com/list.php?41

Yes I know , but this is a general whites detector forum where we can talk about any whites detector. I posted here because I figured I might pick up some comments from people not so biased towards the XLT as on the XLT forum. Most detectors have features that do not appeal to all operators so I thought that by posting here I would pick up on what negative aspects that the XLT might have, aspects that Pro XLT operators might concider not worth talking about but that would be of interest to someone like myself who has not had any experience with this machine; As it is at the moment after only using the detector for a very short time, it is a very good detector and has already found small coins in tough ground that my Sov, 6000DI PRo SL, LST, and infinium missed. These coins gave signals that sounded like trash iron to these machines but the XLT indicated good targets. All of the coins were very old coppers approx one cm in diameter and had been buried for many years and were beneath largish rocks in wet river gravels. So at the moment I am impressed with this oldie.

Fishers Ghost

Fishers Ghost, glad to hear your enjoying your XLT. I just bought a new one myself last week from my local dealer. I've used White's machines in the past, Classics and a QXT Pro and have really enjoyed them. For me Whites detectors have the best sounding audio response. I moved up to a XLT because I wanted the extra information and control the XLT offered. It's a detector thats had a long and loyal following. I'm looking foward to using mine now that Spring is just around the corner. Check out the back posts here on the XLT forum and also Whites web site has forums and one dedicated to the XLT. Lots of good info.

Good Hunting,
Mike in Ohio

[size=large]heah fisher's ghost,
how ya enjoying your oldie but newie XLT? bought mine last may. still learning on it. the more i find about it and test what i found with it the more it impresses me.
you folks down under are going into fall aren't ya? you be real sure to get a 5.3 coil. it will come in real handy. too many people still snowed in or have bad weather
still. makes the forum slow down. some of the cons on the XLT that i've read about are not having a large enough choice on coils. and not having enough depth with any of the coils that are out there. some feel it's the operators and some blame the machine. haven't heard too many that give up the XLT that don't pick up another one later. just seems to be a very enjoyable machine to use.
well have an enjoyable week and hope to read your post on what ya find.

Thanks fot the replies Larry, Mike, Widebody,

The detector seems to be pretty good and I have not noticed any depth problems yet other than the signal for solid TID needs to be fairly strong.
The XLT had no problems finding and Identifying all of the coins in my test patch, these coins are at 8 inches in lightly iron mineralised ground.
The stock coil will do for a while until I get used to the machine.
It seems to be similar to the Eagle ll (had one for a short while) but without the need for a mind like Steven Hawkins to program it:nerd: Man I could not get my head around those multi function keys.

The auto GB is nice and kept a steady threshold all day today with only one re balance when I went into some hot ground.
I have not played with the settings much yet but have noticed that with Audio Disc on, VCO On and Mixed Mode On, the detector tries to whistle dixie when it hits a good target:laugh:
I am going to enjoy this detector.:beers:

is there a good comparison between the xlt and the newer mxt,,i would like to know,,which is best all round,,???

Apples and Oranges.... too many differences to compare really. Both are top notch detectors, XLT is programmable and the MXT Pro is pretty much turn on and go hunting.

Ive seen a guy on his second time out he was so annoyed with the xlt,he said it was the hardest machine invented and after that he took the metal detector and smashed the hell out of it against a tree until passer bys called the cops and kicked and banned all detecting in the towns parks because of this and we were pulling seated out of this park!drunks:drinking:

[size=large]seems to be no differant than kicking everyone off the golf course cause some jerk wrapped his driver around a tree. it's just not done. you gotta fight the morons at city hall. one drunk does not a town make.

Jeeez, I guess he was running on a short fuse at the time.
I have owned an eagle ll that tested my patience and in the early days I had a BFO that I launched off a cliff into the great unknown but the XLT seems to be a breeze in comparison. Most of the adjustments are what you find on most good qual VLFs, you just have to push buttons instead of turning knobs.

The only thing that is anoying me at the moment is that I haven't figured out how to scroll through the Learn Except and Learn Reject mode without changing the settings: I want to select a mode, any mode and be able to find out which numbers are set to except or reject for that particular mode??

When you first go out with your XLT don't adjust or program anything. Hunt strictly in the preset factory programs. Learn to listen for the tones of the type of items you wish to find. Later, when you've got a 100 or so hours on the machine you can start programs and making other settings changes.

Oldcoon.
Yeah you are probably right.
I am in Australia and do a lot of coin and relic hunting, so the Preset coin mode is not much use here because it is set to accept US coins and most of the numbers set to reject also reject our crap metal coins. I have gone to the Preset Coin mode and selected Learn Accept and have scanned all of our coins plus some gold and silver items to be accepted. I then saved this as a Custom Program. Now all I do is adjust the basic settings in that program depending on the conditions where I am detecting. Seems to be working OK. All of the other Pre set programs are great as they are. The XLT is a nice machine and I am very happy with my purchase.

I've owned my XLT for 6months. I continue to learn more of what the detector is telling me each time I go out with it. I expected a long learning curve, but actually, if you just read all you can about the XLT, you'll be surprised at how quickly you learn its language.
I've owned several brands of detectors, but I have to say, I'm more pleased with the XLT with each trip out. I plan on adding a DFX to the arsenal next, as soon as that "GREAT" deal jumps out in front of me! "smile"

My advice for anyone pondering the purchase an XLT, if you are serious about your detecting hobby, you can't go wrong with buying this WEAPON!
