Wrist Pain

SurfPro

New member
Swinging a Sov GT and have developed pain in on the bottom of my left wrist (lefty). Never had that problem with my Dual Field. It's not real bad just a distraction. Anyone else?

SP...

Sure... I get tendinitis all the time. Just give it a rest. I also changed the angle of the handle on my shaft and that alleviated some of the pain.

I think we all get some kind of pain somewhere on our bodies, it's goes with the territory I guess, For instance, I use my Headhunter Pirate, and the headphone ear cups hurt my ears after a couple of hours detecting. Gene

That's because they get tired of listening to all those gold tones you find Gene...haha

This is a necessity. I had it in my elbow and shoulder and after about 3 weeks it went away forever. That was about three years ago and I have never looked back.

Glucosamine takes about a month to alleviate the discomfort, and then take one every other day.

Thanks for the info, I'll pick up some Glucosamine and Chondroitin today, any special strength that I should look for? I also thought about a wrist brace of some kind.

I really notice a great difference in my machines when I put a new extended shaft on. It would wear me out. I mounted the box lower on the shaft and balanced the machine a little more and it made a world of difference. Nothing is as heavy balanced as unbalanced. I just thought about what I said and it sounds stupid but it is easier to handle a weight balanced than a lighter weight not balanced . Play with the box and see if you tape it here and there and if it makes a difference just holding it. I it takes less effort to hold it will take less effort to swing it..May not be for everyone but it worked for me and the machine I was having trouble with.
Hope this helps someone

Hey Dig, My ears haven't hurt in about two or three weeks now, I haven't heard gold for awhile, But your ears ought to be burning with pain. You do really good too. Gene

Use cold packs (keeping a gel pack in the freezer is a good idea) for about 15 minutes several times a day for a couple of days. Do not use heat during this time as it will make it worse. The cold packs will reduce the inflammation and any swelling. Also try to avoid movement that aggravates the pain while it heals. I use my sov gt chest mounted and can swing it all day with no pain. I do get some tendonitis from playing golf once in a while though. Good luck and get those gel packs from your local pharmacy and keep them in the freezer so they'll be ready when you need them. Caution, do not put ice directly on your skin.

Hehehe...Thats just means you're due brother! When gold is lacking...I just keep telling myself I am due. When Im finding gold...I dont need a philosophy.

I do a lot of weight lifting, playing guitar, metal detecting etc.... I'm sure that they all contribute. Picked up the G&D and will ice as well. The difficult part is to not do anything while it heals, I'm heading to the beach in about an hour. BTW: I hip mount the Sov and use a swingy thingy. A typical hunt for me is 4 - 6 hours.

Last Sunday I got 3 rings, 2 gold and 1 silver.

Thanks,
SP...

Part of it for me is the scooping. Both my main scoops have no grab handle so your straining your wrist in a forward direction while you pull the scoop from the sand.

I use a Babb's scoop, I sent it back to him about 6 months ago to have a grab handle added. It makes a huge difference, especially when hauling out the wet sand.

Just a thought, try adjusting the gripping handle on the upper shaft.Maybe an inch up or down might help to make it more comfortable. Also it can be angled slightly to the left or right, that might help too.

What about using a forearm support that you can get when you have to immobilize say a wrist? Wear one of those while detecting and I bet you will not suffer as much.

It seems that when swinging a detector, the wrist is locked and that takes muscle power to do. If you could supplement the locking of the wrist with a forearm support, the arm cuff on the detector working in concert with the forearm support would
keep the pressure off the wrist which seems to be the problem with most people.

Maybe a full length forearm cuff instead of the little cuff that all detectors have would be an answer to the problems that all of us weenies are having with our wrists.
