Wouldn't you rather be a prepper too?'''

Subculture of Americans prepares for civilization's collapse
By Jim Forsyth

(Reuters) - When Patty Tegeler looks out the window of her home overlooking the Appalachian Mountains in southwestern Virginia, she sees trouble on the horizon.

"In an instant, anything can happen," she told Reuters. "And I firmly believe that you have to be prepared."

Tegeler is among a growing subculture of Americans who refer to themselves informally as "preppers." Some are driven by a fear of imminent societal collapse, others are worried about terrorism, and many have a vague concern that an escalating series of natural disasters is leading to some type of environmental cataclysm.

They are following in the footsteps of hippies in the 1960s who set up communes to separate themselves from what they saw as a materialistic society, and the survivalists in the 1990s who were hoping to escape the dictates of what they perceived as an increasingly secular and oppressive government.

Preppers, though are, worried about no government.

Tegeler, 57, has turned her home in rural Virginia into a "survival center," complete with a large generator, portable heaters, water tanks, and a two-year supply of freeze-dried food that her sister recently gave her as a birthday present. She says that in case of emergency, she could survive indefinitely in her home. And she thinks that emergency could come soon.

"I think this economy is about to fall apart," she said.

A wide range of vendors market products to preppers, mainly online. They sell everything from water tanks to guns to survival skills.

Conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck seems to preach preppers' message when he tells listeners: "It's never too late to prepare for the end of the world as we know it."

"Unfortunately, given the increasing complexity and fragility of our modern technological society, the chances of a societal collapse are increasing year after year," said author James Wesley Rawles, whose Survival Blog is considered the guiding light of the prepper movement.

A former Army intelligence officer, Rawles has written fiction and non-fiction books on end-of-civilization topics, including "How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It," which is also known as the preppers' Bible.

"We could see a cascade of higher interest rates, margin calls, stock market collapses, bank runs, currency revaluations, mass street protests, and riots," he told Reuters. "The worst-case end result would be a Third World War, mass inflation, currency collapses, and long term power grid failures."

A sense of "suffering and being afraid" is usually at the root of this kind of thinking, according to Cathy Gutierrez, an expert on end-times beliefs at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. Such feelings are not unnatural in a time of economic recession and concerns about a growing national debt, she said.

"With our current dependence on things from the electric grid to the Internet, things that people have absolutely no control over, there is a feeling that a collapse scenario can easily emerge, with a belief that the end is coming, and it is all out of the individual's control," she told Reuters.

She compared the major technological developments of the past decade to the Industrial Revolution of the 1830s and 1840s, which led to the growth of the Millerites, the 19th-Century equivalent of the preppers. Followers of charismatic preacher Joseph Miller, many sold everything and gathered in 1844 for what they believed would be the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Many of today's preppers receive inspiration from the Internet, devouring information posted on websites like that run by attorney Michael T. Snider, who writes The Economic Collapse blog out of his home in northern Idaho.

"Modern preppers are much different from the survivalists of the old days," he said. "You could be living next door to a prepper and never even know it. Many suburbanites are turning spare rooms into food pantries and are going for survival training on the weekends."

Like other preppers, Snider is worried about the end of a functioning U.S. economy. He points out that tens of millions of Americans are on food stamps and that many U.S. children are living in poverty.

"Most people have a gut feeling that something has gone terribly wrong, but that doesn't mean that they understand what is happening," he said. "A lot of Americans sense that a massive economic storm is coming and they want to be prepared for it."

So, assuming there is no collapse of society -- which the preppers call "uncivilization" -- what is the future of the preppers?

Gutierrez said that unlike the Millerites -- or followers of radio preacher Harold Camping, who predicted the world would end last year -- preppers are not setting a date for the coming destruction. The Mayan Calendar predicts doom this December.

"The minute you set a date, you are courting disconfirmation," she said.

Tegeler, who recalls being hit by tornadoes and floods in her southwestern Virginia home, said that none of her "survival center" products will go to waste.

"I think it's silly not to be prepared," she said. "After all, anything can happen." (Yep)

It is good to be prepared for disasters but the best preparaion is to know Jesus Christ as our own personal Savior and then lean on and trust in Him to endure and overcome all trials and troubles that will happen to each of us at some time or another! She should not advertise that she has all that survival stuff including food, for when the great depression does come....all the scavengers will know where to go and get hers so they can live on what she has done and saved! It's better to believe in Jesus and then be secretive about what God's Holy Spirit is leading you to do, until Jesus catches His own away from what is coming upon the whole world! Amen! I've not posted this in the open, as I know most of the world doesn't believe like I do and will disagree with me, but that is okay, I know in Whom I trust and Who will help me! May God Jehovah have mercy upon us all! Amen! Ma Betty

There's a Proverb about "consider the ant" you might want to read. We do trust in Jesus, but we also know that the first time the Apostles were sent out to preach the gospel, they were under his protection totally; nothing could hurt them, not poison, not a snake bite, etc. The second Jesus sent them out they were not under his protection; he told them if you have a sword, take it; if you don't have one, go out and buy one. This was for them to protect themselves. My point is, trust in Jesus, but be prepared. Even Jesus will tell you that.

The owner of the home grew up in the 1950-1960 cold war atomic threat era. The nephews were the surviving family cleaning out his home. There was a living room filled 4 ft high with survival gear of the day, mostly Korea war surplus, including all types of ration foods in cans. There was a stack of anti communist pamphlets, books. etc. This guy was READY. Fortunately he never needed to use any of it but I'll bet he slept better knowing it was there. The saying goes "Make love not war but be prepared for both" And I also believe there is a storm on the horizon.

Yep. Skills in your mind are a lot more important than gear on your back...Theres been a huge flurry of activity on this subject in the past few years, a lot of people are scared and want to know what to do. Unfortunately, some go way overboard, and some dont want to think about it at all. I do believe God has a plan for each of us, and if He lays this upon your heart to prepare, then just be sure you arn't doing it out of a sense of fear, our God is not a spirit of fear. Get some skills because its interesting, and you should at least know how to make a shelter/fire. Hypothermia kills in @3hours, lots of "old timey" skills can be found in the Foxfire series, if a person is bent on reading first hand accounts of doing things. Of course I see I'm preaching to the choir here!

I don't get where you and Vernon thought that I didn't believe in being prepared, what I said was that these people shouldn't be so open about where they keep their emergeny supplies...for many don't know Jesus and will do whatever they want to get what they want including stealing, torture and murder! I believe in getting and being prepared but my main belief is depending on Jesus and what God's Holy Spirit reveals to and tells me! Nope, being prepared is the best we can do in every trial and trouble, for there are many storms in life to overcome! If I explained my thoughts in the wrong way....sorry that you misunderstood! Better to be wise than sorry!

Even the Jews during the Holacaust....some were deceived and didn't believe what happened could or would happen but others took the steps to believe and help others to keep them from being caught, imprisoned and put to death! There are always those who think only of themselves in times like the dictating Hitler had, and will do anything to keep from being starved and imprisoned or murdered, also! I have common sense along with godly wisdomk! You all will know who a true friend is when troubled times come and you are in terrible need and Jesus is our best Friend and true believing Christians will be the first ones helping when disasters come upon the world! Ma Betty

when trials and depressions do come there will be those who will take from others with whatever means they can to use for themselves! When hunger hits.....many won't care when, where or how they get it....soo if you have guns, food and other supplies to be prepared....please don't let the whole world know! OKAY??? Common sense reveals this to those who will learn and know what is going to come upon all nations!  Ma Betty

when ST. Joseph Lead Co started mining, the springs dried up and dad had to have a well dug! The last time we visited the farm owned by some nice folks..the spring was coming back to life! The newer owners (two times sold) used the large Clay Covert? to burn trash in and will have to be cleaned and reused for the cold spring water....very good water it was, but had to carry it in buckets from there and into the house for drinking, bathing, cooking and etc. Did my share of hauling water!  Ma Betty
