Wooooo Hoooooo just finalized plans for a great detecting trip ....

Leaving August 14th for about 9 days of detecting with my buddy Keith from Pennsylvania. We were both able to use frequent flier miles from CC purchases and actual prior flights. So the flights are almost free .... just pay airport security fees / airport passenger fees. Oh, YEAH .... I'm pumped. Diggin Roman and Medieval coins and artifacts is way more fun than beach and water for clad and jewelry.

I'll be using the MXT as primary and have a DFX as an alternate and back up. Will use the concentric 9.5" and the 6x10 Eclipse for coils.

We'll meet up with our friends Brian and Mo (as in the lovely Muriel)in Manchester, UK rent a car, take a nap, then head for Yorkshire where we stay at small to tiny town B&B's .... some of these towns haven't seen a "Yank" since WWII.

We'll force ourselves to quaff a few pints with the local farmers and end up getting permission to hunt thousands of acres of land. We'll return to a few towns were we know some farmers and search out some new towns.

Sometimes we do quite well and find some really productive fields, others are less productive. Will certainly take my camera ... not sure about lugging around the lap top as there aren't too many wireless access B&B's / pubs.

I promise to eat my fair share of fish & chips, roast lamb (it's terrific there), and gammon. For dessert my choice is "spotted dick" ... an old English seafarers highly sweet and super rich hot sugar and suet sauce with raisins over a chewy thick cold cookie. Sounds terrible but is Mummmm GOOD! It will run your cholesterol up to MACH 7.

Pray for no hurricanes while I'm gone. Two years ago when we went, I got to detect for only 1 1/2 days before heading back home due to Hurricane Ivan heading right for us here in SW Fla. I had left on a Wednesday, arrived in the UK Thursday, detected Thursday afternoon and Friday ... and flew back home Saturday to hear "all clear" .. it missed us. Bummer.

Here is a photo from a past trip showing the type of countryside we detect. Left to right: me, Keith, and Brian.

Very cool Ed. Have a great time as I'm sure you will!!!

like England-Alaska--ED your 1 of those people--Me I stay at home and work work work and I doubt if I will ever get out of WA. Or. ever again---Vern is another 1 of these people also some one who grew up across from me and I took him at fifteen with me on a trip! We never found any gold BUT he became a Geologist and has hunted gold the world over--He should be in Moore's Creek AK. at this time----I predict Ed you will find (not 1 but (2) gold coins---So let us know whats going on each day--I think England must have One place where you can send E Mail-------Wish you GREAT luck on the Never ending Quest for GOLD---(DeathWind1)

... a gold Henry VIII angel coin. In the past he and Keith have both found gold staters (sp?) before. I've found a few hammered silver coins.

If you get a credit card that allows you to rack up frequent flier miles and use it to buy everything you can get a round trip ticket to the UK for 50,000 miles. Travel in the USA is usually 25,000 or 30,000 flier miles. Makes a trip to the UK about as expensive as traveling here in the USA. There are various levels of B&B's the ones over the pubs are a bit less than ones on beautiful farms.

Sharing a rental car and gas also helps on expenses.

and hunt. It is the island of Sark in the channel islands. Closer to France then the UK. But definitely British. The last (and only) time I was there was about 16-17 years ago and it has not changed a bit. It takes over two days to get there from London it is so far off the beaten path. Had to take bus, train, overnight ferry and then small taxi boat to get there.

Everything is old but very little is torn down or paved over. I doubt if very many metal detectors have ever been there.

No cars are allowed on Sark, so the only way to get around in walk, bicycle or horse & buggy. Here is a pic I took while there.

... for several reasons. With two yanks and two Brits, that's about a farmer is comfortable letting on their land. More than that they want to be paid or just flat out won't let you detect.

2nd issue is transportation. The cars there are so tiny you can't comfortably fit more than two people and needed stuff in a car.

3rd issue is B&B's ... two rooms are sometimes difficult to get ... since Keith and I both snore .... (like Ray calibur snoring) and because we both prefer our own room, getting 3 or more rooms becomes VERY difficult. Brian and Mo stay in their caravan (that's Brit for RV).

I'll keep you in mind for a future trip if you are serious.

me your tickets instead i promise to give you 1/100 of 1% of what i find, now thats a deal. i hope you guys have good wheather and a great time while the reast of us are over here drueling with envy. hope you find lots of old goodies and take lots of pics. good luck you guys. tina wants to no if she can hide in one of the suit cases she wants to visit all the old castles.

Detecting the UK has always been a dream of mine!! Thanks for inviting me along!! I almost got to go to the UK when I was in flight training. For our navigation trip we tried to go to Mildenhall Airbase, but they didn't have enough rooms for us, so we ended up going to Torrejon Airbase just outside Madrid, Spain. There were two of us trainees, one for radar and the other(me) acoustic operators, and the first day we went to Madrid. I took 2 years of high school Spanish and it didn't do much good!! We both ended up pointing and gesturing to get our request made known. The second day my instructor came to me and asked if we were going back to Madrid again. I told him we were, but we didn't speak Spanish. He asked if he could go with us because the other instructor just wanted to stay on base and get drunk (that is what he had done the first day). I told him he was welcome to come with us. His name was Bob Blanco and when he was a child his parents had fled Cuba when Castro came to power. He spoke fluid Spanish!!! It is much easier to get things done when you can speak the language!!! We had a great time!!! I still would have liked to go to the UK, but never made it there!! So this trip will be my first time...THANK YOU, ED!!!:super::super:
