Wonder why you're not finding rings?

If you read some of the other replies here, the reason you haven't found any gold rings in your 5 yrs, is not because people double-back and look for it if they lost a gold ring, it's because you're not digging enough pulltabs! I still chuckle when I read this admonition, that the reason for lack of gold rings, is disc. setting set too high.

This is already a "GIVEN" that gold rings are a low conductor. So the trick to finding gold rings is not simply to "dig more pulltabs". But rather, to re-think the type areas you're hunting! Junky blighted urban parks and vacant lots are not the locations to find gold rings, in NO MATTER HOW MANY PULLTABS YOU'RE WILLING TO DIG.

The trick is to hit areas more inclined to have gold rings, to begin with. And that is: swimming beaches. Preferably in the water. But even on the upper sun-tan zone of the beach is ok. It can be either in-land fresh-water lake beaches, or ocean beaches. Sand is easy to dig in, and beaches are the perfect recipe for jewelry losses.

Last year (2010) when I started this hobby, I found 5 gold rings. This year so far I am at 4 gold rings. All these rings found are from parks / fields. My beach finds are poor, I have a better productive time on land. I too dig all beeps. Since getting the Fisher Gold Bug Pro this year (back in January) I've found more nickles than I did last year.

Very well said Tom. I have found over a hundred gold rings.Location-location-location plays a big part. You can't find gold rings where there are not any or very few with all the trash.....Jack

4 me its always been dig, dig, dig more - don't cherry pick..... keep digging
I know its not for all, but I don't disc tabs.
I might not get far fast, I'm usually lagging way behind others, but I'm in no hurry.
I'd rather dig and find out instead of seeing who gets across the field the fastest.
Small coils slowing me down? Oh no, the slow it where its at - my speed.
Planting my hind end on down and digging is better than walking around & searching.

Have you considered altering the type places you hunt, to up your ring ratios?

today with my "NEW" Silver Sabre Plus, that i got last week, i hunted my usual pull tab nightmare fresh water beach. i have found 3 gold rings in the past, fair amount of silver. lot of clad, and ton of tabs. this is a small beach and might see 200 people a day. i did not find any gold today, niether did friend with tid machine, nice whites. we found some clad, and junk. i found 105 tabs, to put in my Ronald McDonald house charity jar, which is 5 cent per tab paid by Coca -Cola for each. i did test my machine to learn how to thumb it up and guess, but i dug every target. tired? yes, but i cleaned the beach, a little cash for charity, had a good time with new friend to hunt with, and had a chance for a ring. the machine i just traded the sabre for was a TID and it worked fine, but if its in the low range, i am going to dig on a beach. now a trashy yard, maybe i might disc up for surface coins and silver only range, when i cant dig it all. location probabilities tone, whatever brings home the loot!

If I had to make a list here is one I'd follow to find gold...and I am not talking nuggets...
#1. Swimming areas....we are talking IN the lake stream or ocean.
#2 . Bathing and washing locations This could be free showers at the beach/or out house or other spots where the bath water or dish water was tossed.
#3 . Resting and coupling spots... seems self evident.. quiet spots to relax in the park or out in the woods.
#4 Sport activities...places where they might have engaged in throwing stuff..from frisbee's to baseball or basketballs...
(includes the sidelines to almost every sport.)
#5 Entry points...places where people got in and out of...wagons/horses or cars.
Thing includes all those grass parkways in rural towns, and some urban areas that have not paved them away yet.
#6 places where our youth congregate...(playgrounds,schools church areas)
If you can think of more obvious locations be my guest and them to the list.
Granted that just because a location is used by people does not mean they have lost gold...but The CLASS of people can mean a lot. Any lake that (mexican people) use to baptish new members often sees a lot of gold jewelery being found. I am sure there are other groups that have certian things they do that helps them to lose items also.
