Wireless (Cordless) Earphones???

SeniorSeeker

My reason for writing is to ask, if anyone knows, if there's such a thing as 'Wireless Earphones' on the market, for metal detectors and, if there is, why haven't we heard about them before???

Radio Shack # 33-1253 regular price is 65. Was just on sale for 39. They work great on any machine. Buy the replacement warranty. It's only 5.00 per year. Been using them for a couple of years. You will need a 1/4 x 1/8 jack adapter. Cost about 2.00

WARNING! Make sure your detector has a built in volume control. All cordless earphones I've used including the Radio Shack one incorporate an agc on their input. They're fine if you can turn down the volume on your detector (like my Big Bud). If you can't (like my Lobo) the first pass over a target will be loud, the second will be so low you won't hardly be able to hear it. Yea, the phones have a volume control, but this is on the output not on the input. Now, you can go into your detector and add a control on the output, but KISS YOUR WARRENTY GOODBYE. :cheekkiss: Also be aware of the DELAY all cordless 'phones have. Some are worst than others. What's that mean? It means your coil passes over a target and your earphones TELL YOU LATER :yikes: Yes, the faster you scan with your coil, the more apparent this becomes. Some brands are worst than others. Yes, you can mentally compensate, but it becomes a pain after awhile. I think if you can overcome the above problems they would be great. If you figure it out please do a new post and tell us how. It would be cool to not have to spend half my detecting time untangling earphone wires forever getting snagged on some bush.

Silversmith,
Your scaring some people from using wireless. I believe you are talking about Bluetooth headsets. I have used 3 sets of Bluetooth and they do not work. The Radio Shack 33-1253 phones are not Bluetooth. They work great. The volume control works perfect. There is absolutely no lag in the signal response. They are cheap. Sound great. I have used them in detectors with no volume control and ones with volume control. Either way they work fine. Here are some machines that I remember using them in. Silver Sabre uMax, Compadre, Fisher CZ5, F2, Whites Classic IDX, Classis 3, Xterra 30,50,70. Garrett Ace 250. I'm positive they will work in any machine.

Sorry khouse, I'm positive they won't. Find someone with a Lobo or other detector with NO VOLUME CONTROL and find out. And yes, even my Radio Shacks, have the delayed reporting. Not as bad but it's there. Like you, when I first got interested in cordless some on this forum warned me but I wouldn't listen. Now I've been out over $100 for earphones that just sit on the shelf.
You guys out there, don't believe either one of us. Take your detector to the retailer and try before you buy. The only way to win.:thumbup::thumbup:

Yup! Looking at the number on the side of the sender 33-1253. Diffinately wanted to use these phones. No cord to get tangled and can wear a large "cooly hat" with 'em. Hey, I'm sure they'd work just fine if I added a couple of 10 ohm resistors to the earphone jack, but I don't want to void my warranty.

I stand corrected. This is the first time I have heard of them not working on a particular machine. But I have used them on a lot of detectors without volume control with success. Maybe it's just your LOBO that doesn't like them?

No, my Big Bud Pro 220-D didn't like 'em either. I think it has to do with an unloaded op amp being fed into a virtual high impedance earphone amplifier with a companion agc circuit. I solved the problem by adding a "pad" to the output of the Big Bud. It could be done externally on the Lobo, but it would be a mess hanging down. I just wanted folks to be aware if they have problems what the wireless 'phones could do. Earlier with a different wireless set I had the same problem + the time delay problem was not
worth it.

Those two detectors I have not used. Maybe we should start a list of detectors the Radio Shack 33-1253's work or do not work on. I already listed the units I have used them on with great success.

All this said regarding the Radio Shack 33-1253s.

I have a Fisher Coinstrike, it does have electronic volume control (no knob), would you guys guess the 1253s would or would not work with my detector?

I'm sure it would work. The best thing about the 33-1253 set is they have a 30 day money back warranty. So to give them a try would cost nothing if they don't work. I'm 100% sure they will.

Make sure your headphones are NOT scanning type...I bought a set of Sentry headphones for $10 off eBad, and they pick up all FM frequencies...Including the detectors transmit frequency of 6.69Mhz...All I heard was a constant beeping...lol...live and learn I guess...Next time I go with headphones on a different frequency...lol

HH,

Please let us know, some detectors work, some do not. If the audio starts off loud when you air test it, then drops immediately to barely hear-able then the earphones are being overloaded. Too bad too. I use 'em on my Big Bud. They work just great, but won't work on my Lobo. :sadwalk:

Silversmith...If you still have those headphones and want to unload them, I may be interested in them...They should work with my Classic II SL and my BH...

HH,

Just picked up the radio shack headphones they seem to work decent. the sound is kinda muffled but i think it will be ok, i will know more in the morning going hunting. I mounted the box under my arm cuff with valcro just need to plastic wire tie the cord.

Yep, they work great on some detectors, but not others.. Test before you buy. Oh, if you move the loop slowly, when you detect, you won't notice, but if you scan fast you'll notice a delay in the target report, just like Gogogopher said. But with the radioshack (now "The Shack" ? it's minimal and tolerable. I solved my problem by going to headphones with "curly cords" instead of the straight wire. When caught on brush and other things, it's a gentile tug instead of jerking the darn'd things OFF YOU HEAD MAKING YOU CUSS LIKE A S..-OF A B.....! You Betcha

Have ya'll tried one of those fm transmiters for the IPOD that are battery powered and a set of headphones with built in radio reciever? I tried it and it worked fine but none of it was radio shack. Just another thought.

If you have some bucks to spend, try Airheadz Wireless headphones sold by The Midas Touch ( www.airheadzwireless.com ) . Like I said they are pricey but high quality. I have had a pair for a couple months and have used them on my Safari and E-Trac . They are engineered from the ground up for use with metal detectors . It's a modular system so you can go wired or wireless . I have used the Radio Shack headphones and returned them because of cutting in and out ,delay , and they killed the back of my ears after a short time . The airheadz have no delay like all of the other wireless headphones that I have tried , maybe because the transmitter as well as the receiver are powered by internal rechargeable batteries . Let me say again , they are expensive , but I really like them .
