First of all, man does it pay to research your areas. Went online and found all sources to lakes and ponds. Went to beach yestrday and found little clad, third dig produced a nice .925 heavy silver ring. Then I finally talked myself into going to a lake with a nice beach.
Walked away with $15.00 in coins but no gold. Some silver. Now here is the first qts? I walked in chest deep water and for every 2 steps I took I was hitting clad clad clad, but no gold. Had to leave because of dark anf the lake closes. My questions is, why did I not find any gold? Seems like the lake has a gravel and soft bottom, and scoop dug in quit well, but no gold. This lake has n ot been touched from what it seems, however, I only worked maybe a 50 yard section and had tons of lake to cover. maybe the gold will come, but does the soft gravel bottom effect it?

Second qts? Please help; Can you really do well in the winter and do you really find much? Do noreasters really affect the movement of the sand that much. I am really serious in finding out if this is really true because I would have thought the beach would die down for gold loot. I apologize for being an infant and a little immature here but I am trying to learn. Please help. Also, what do the majority of hunters wear for winter weather at the beach as well as in the beach.

Thank you for the help.

Gary

Im no expert, but the soft bottom would have all the heavy items like gold and platinum, sink. If you get lead sinkers, then the gold is not to deep. But if you dont get sinkers, then that means that it might be so soft, that heavy items will sink deeper than the detector can reach. I dont know what the gravel would do though. The noreasters will tear the beach up, uncovering more items. I would reccomend buying a wetsuit for winter. A dry suit would be to thick. Hope this helps, HH!!

Fantastic. Thanks for the response and the help. What type of gear do you wear in the winter, wet suit/dry suit, waders?

You are recovering the surface stuff - the loud signals. Now that you have them "cleaned up" - go back, and listen for the fainter signals... the rings are deeper.

Winter is the best time for waterhunting in the Northeast...

During the summer the sand moves in burying our finds, during the winter the sand moves out exposing gravel and shells where the gold sits.

I use neoprene waders for winter water hunting, I was in water in the low 30's all winter long and very toasty.. I use gauntlet gloves to protect my arms and hands and place those hand warmer packets in each palm of the gloves.

I will hunt 3/4 times a week in winter and very rarely in summer..

What others said is right on... clean out the surface stuff and listen for the whispers of the deep stuff and you will score the gold :)

I use the Sterling Polar Paws in winter..

Craig, awesome advice, thanks very much for the great info, I will do just as you mentioned. Waders are next on the purchase list.

I agree with you 100% with what everyone is telling me. Thanks for the advice, as I am always grateful to learn from the pros, (you guys).

First off the lake you found is prob a gold mine. Literally, lakes that are untouched are few and far between and you appear to have found just that! Don't wait and I would hunt that often. If you wait someone will get to it before you!! Also go slow and dig everything, get all the clad out and the surface junk. Along the way you will start running into rings but alot of them are deeper. Especially the older and heavier ones. As far as the gravel bottom, that is actually quite good. It makes digging and recovery much easier. I found a gold class ring in a loose gravel bottom. When i tracked down the owner, she said it was lost right after she grad in 1969!! I found that ring in 1998. How deep was it? about 8 inches deep. 29 years it laid there!!! Of course if you have a lake with wave action it can sink much deeper. Now if your lake has about 10 inches of gravel and a base of clay, that is even better. Why? Cause the rings can't sink far into the clay.
Anyway that is my input.

Oh yeah, depending on how cold it gets. You can use a wetsuit, 6mil is a warm suit and thick diving gloves and dive boots are what i use for colder water.

good luck and post those finds!!!

you dont need to get wet to find good stuff it will be on the slope and anywhere below high tide mark.plus when the hunting is good the waves are at there worst!!you can get dead quick!! watch out i have seen waves go 20 extra feet up the beach from the last one that just broke.if your hunting a big cut like the one i posted a link too..watch your back and watch where you can exit the beach..water can come in to your left and right leaving you only way out over the dune cut,as you can see in that photo you could never climb out. if you hunt the north shore this winter im sure we will meet. good luck be safe!!

John,

Thanks so much for the great advice. Man I wish I could take off for a week and go hunting at this lake. Timing for everything sucks, like the wedding I have to attend this weekend as opposed to hunting, which I would prefer. Thanks again for the notes and info.

If you have a dick's sporting goods near you you can get neoprene waders with the boots attached or you can get the boots separate. They keep you very warm and dry. Make sure you get a good pair of neoprene gloves they will keep your hands warm too. No need to put the hot packs into those kind of gloves that I know of. Make sure you have a nice warm hat too. The winter months are the most fun in N.J. when we get NorEasters they take away alot of beach and expose alot of great stuff. It is a shame that most of our beaches have been replenished but old stuff will still shine through. I can't wait for winter and the storms. Good luck and keep warm!

Yah, I can sure see your point about getting "caught" if the waves get big - especially if you're concentrating on digging or something else. I'm really looking forward to trying winter detecting this season!!

Just out of curiousity, do you know if Revere Beach gets detected much? I'm a "transplant" to NH, so I don't know much about neighborhoods, but some folks at work have told me it's probably not the safest to go down to Revere Beach. When they told me Revere isn't exactly the nicest area to go to I got to thinking the beach there may be a good spot to hunt. In my mind I'm thinking "punks with lots of jewelry + beach not detected hard = treasure!!!"

Looking forward to running across you this winter.

I HAVE HUNTED THERE A FEW TIMES THE LAST COUPLE WEEKS,SLIM PICKINGS TONS OF TRASH!! I WILL BE HITTING A FEW SPOTS THIS WINTER WE MAY RUN INTO EACHOTHER . I WILL BE HITTING LAKES FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WHILE ITS WARM STILL AND MOST SALT WATER BEACHES ARE SANDDED IN!! GOOD LUCK!!
