Winter Hunting

Do any of you guys that brave the cold weather of Winter notice any difference in target depths with your Multi Frequency machines ? ...... I know for a fact that my Excal and my E Trac can hit gold pretty deep ....Maybe not the best machines for gold, but surely not bad ......My partner and I did a test where we buried a womans gold ring down 12 " in the sand on the beach , and pulled it up in one inch increments to see what mavhines would hit it ......The machines were

1) Excal
2) E Trac
3) CZ-21
4) AT Pro

As I said , this particular E Trac and operator are both known performers .......The Excal has already dug plenty of gold and dug it deep ......

What happened on this COOOOLD beach was the fact that neither the Excal , nor the E Trac , could hit this ring until it got up pretty close to the surface ..... My partner adjusted his E Trac in many different ways, and I adjusted my Excal in both Discrimination and ALL METAL, and also changed the Sensitivity to try to hit the target ..... The CZ and the AT Pro hit the targets WAY before either Minelab machines ....I'm not putting the Minelab mahines down for a minute , but I was SHOCKED to say the least when the AT and the CZ hit before the Minelab's did !!....... My question is ...Do Minelab machines have a problem when hunting in extreme cold weather ? .....OR .....Do multi frequency machines have problems in cold weather ? ......Has anyone else noticed this , or is my partner and I the only crazy ones that would try a test like this in the cold of Winter ? .......Thanks , Jim

That's a tough one to answer. All I know is my Excall does go deep. Just this past weekend, very cold Delaware beach, I dug a quarter that was down at least a foot easy and had been there a long time. Not gold but still a target recovered at good depth and my battery was dying. I also dug a cigarete pack at about the same depth. Was really supprised about that. I've seen videos of oldbeechnut digging stuff real deep as well. Will have to give that a try with my wedding ring and see if i get the same results.

I'm familiar with folks digging deep targets in warmer climates and I'm one of them , but I'm referring to targets in the colder freezing area's ..... I KNOW that I have been on this beach and have dug MUCH deeper targets with my Excal , but this gold was not making a peep until it almost surfaced ....???????......The weather was the only difference .....??????.....Jim

For starters. The target was a thin 14k womens band. That in its self is a test for most machines. Coins are not a problem deep with the ET. That day the ET hit the ring at the same depth the AT did. But like the AT it was all over the place.

What threw me was the fact the Excall 1000 could not hit it.

Hi, There is no difference in depth in a Sovereign or Excalibers in summer or winter what the minelabs do not like is Disturbed sand or dirt by digging up and testing depth that way. In natural conditions they go Deep with the right coil and the halo effect of coin or any metal.

Gold does not oxidize , therefore has no halo effect .......Other metals yes, but not gold .....There has to be some other reason for the Excal not hitting better than it did .....Jim

Only problem is most of the places I hunt during the winter the targets are all deep, not may shallow...Summer, most are shallow.... Good Test, would enjoy seeing the video... Some detectors handle, and do better in different locations. What was the size of the cz coil? Years ago the CZ's ruled, and still do some places. When I hunted the dirt. I would take two detectors when hunting..The Explorer would clean out the Silver then I would go back thur and the new (then) Dfx would get the wheaties..And how that explorer missed them amazed me.

I would say the thin ring may have been the factor. Excal does not seem to like thin gold as much AT is very sensitive to small thin targets and foil. Excal is not.

Hi Joe,
The coil was the 10.5" coil ..... The ring in question was not laying flat ....It was coming up thru the ground on edge ......That was part of it , but the CZ and the AT hit the target well before either of the Minelabs ....The E Trac was next to hit it .....and the Excal was a distant last .....This Excal has hit rings , coins , and everything else DEEP in the past ....I'm gonna have to investigate further ..... Did you get a chance to try that amp that I told you about ? .......Hope it worked out for you .....Jim

I can surely say without a doubt that the AT loves GOLD !!.....That works fine as GOLD is why I bought this machine for the recent drops on the beach in the dry sand .....It hits coins pretty darn good too !!.....Jim

Ive never noticed any difference because of temperature and use all the machines you mention except the AT pro.

I did a test once like you did on an ocean beach in the wet sand with a thin gold ring. I had someone with an excal try and hit it and I was using a CZ3D that day. The excal could not hit it at the depth of the CZ. The CZ series sure could have benefited from a nice selection of DD coils, those concentrics on it only give a small coverage at depth, a real downfall when beach hunting. The CZs are better on the smaller gold at depth I would say.

Jim do you hunt any jersey beaches?

Neil ,
I'll be headin down that way this Spring .....I do a lot of fishing down that way .... Raritain Bay , Barnegat, Belmar , ........I'd like to hunt Atlantic City one time but it's a good haul for me .....Jim

Headed out in the morning to OC to do a little playing...got a couple gold rings, and a handful of detectors. One of interest is a Old minlabs Excalibur 94-96 Gary Storm New York Excal, others 2 PI's and 2 excal's, and Cz 20...was going to bring the SE, but I'm a ride along. Jim on the Ebay Amp, I keep putting it off..was focused on Shaun's Amp on the excal, but seems both are not compatible...you would figure both are BBS but could not get a signal to the pod, like the amp was blocking it...anyway, future sovereign project. Thanks again for the eye opener, maybe once the weather breaks you can give us another update..the AT Pro sound good...sandman got one, be interesting to see what he has to say........

WOW!!!!! really interested in more tests. i have a excal and a cz20 and never dreamed the excal would be gold dead compared to the cz.
what size coils were on each machine?
what were the settings of each machine?
what was the purity/gold content of the ring?

will do this test myself when my ground/sand is no longer frozen!!!!!!!!

Barnegat is two towns south of me, what do you hunt there? theres only small bay beaches there.

I venture as far north as say Pt Pleasant and then south all the way to Cape May. You wanna do any testing this spring, let me know.

I proposed this question to Tom D. who some of you are familiar with ......He basically said that since Gold does NOT oxidize , a halo is not apt to form ......Whether or not gold is recently put in the ground , or has been there for a while , it will be "electrically connected " ( basically GROUNDED ) in the sand ......."Halo " and "Electically Connected " being two completely differnt scenario's ... He also concluded that there may be an issue with the thermal conditions ? ......Again, no conclusive evidence but left me with a better understanding of dealing with gold ..... Perhaps with a fresh drop of saltwater would have kicked things up a notch ?

Waiting for warmer weather and easier conditions will change the variables to a large extent ......I already know that my Excal will hit targets in nice weather and so will my E Trac .....I have done this time and time again .....This is why I was so shocked that it took them so long to hit this time around, and the reason I posted this thread ..... It was very unlike EITHER machine to react this way ..... It did not matter how either machine was set up ( they were both adjusted numerous ways ) ....They just did not want to hit that ring .......

Again, you have to understand how UN scientific this experiment was .....What we basically set out to do was to set our machines the way we would normally set them up for a typical day at the beach ......No blasting of Sensitivity until our ears bled , no additonal amplifiers, no inching along like we were listenning for 2 coins rubbing together .....NORMAL everyday settings ......Of course later on when we were SHOCKED with what results we were getting , we DID in fact change our settings to no avail ...THIS was the kick in the head !!.... As mentioned earlier , BOTH machines are known performers , so it wasn't that the machines were bad ...... Jim

synthnut,
You got me freakin' a little because the only machines I use on the beach are the E-trac, but mostly the Excal 2.
Haven't found squat all winter, but I would like to contribute that to sanded in beaches.
I thought about buying the AT pro but decided not to.
Now you got me thinking the $550 might be an ok choice.
I still want to wait for Minelabs new offering (it has been a few years and I think their due),
but the AT pro is soooo cheap what do I have to lose?
What to do, what to do.
Good Luck
Deep Digger

After hauling a bunch of top beach detectors down to Oc ................Not only the matrix of the sand but the size, shape, and karats of the ring can make a big difference on which detector does the best on locating the target
