Winter Hunting

The owners manuals for both the Excalibur and the E-trac state that operating temps are 32 degrees F to 113 F.

Any colder and they will slow down or stop. Batteries have a lot to do with that. Just like the battery in your car.

My E-trac's screen would freeze up in cold weather to a point that it was useless. My Excalibur would not work in weather colder than 28. It just would not work well at all.

These machines are just not engineered to work in really cold weather.

I would say the thin ring may have been the factor.

Temp could have played a part but I think Jason was right, took a handful of detectors down to the Ocean Thursday, and two rings, semi large male wedding band and thin female. Rings stayed total flat complete test ...Temp was 40, ...All were good solid hits, have video of all, with audio tones & hits in the video.....but not going to do a video because I feel to do a good video and test you need each machine to have it's own experienced hunter, along with a separate camera man to show the details..like settings, close ups, etc.............then you have the factor of what works at one place may not work at another, Sooooo........ just to go out and have fun, like EZ, and Synthnut, and me.It was almost as good as finding more Gold. And I learned alittle about each machine.......
Size 13 Mans 14k, 7.5 grams ............16 inch's........none.......................14 inchs.... Garrett Infinium PI, Amped excal..........rest came in between 10 & 12 inch's
Size 6 1.5 gram 10k women's ring......14 inch's....... none.........................6 inch's......Garrett Sea Hunter PI, rest of the pack started hitting at 4 inch's

Joe,
Why then did the other detectors hit it ? .....Is this to say then that the Minelab machines don't hit thin rings ? .....I know that to be un true with some of the finds that I have had while hunting in the Summer months ......I'm sure that orientation may have played a part , but again , some machines hit it , and some didn't .....??????......This particular ring happened to have been found on this very beach , in this very area , and with the E Trac that was used for the test ......This why I was asking about how others dd with their detectors in the cold ....I don't normally go out and detect in the Winter .... Curiousity of how well lthese machines stacked up got the best of me , and Spring is too far away ..... and so is Florida or Jamaica ....LOL !!..... I really didn't think that I was going to be greeted wth this new set of issues ..... or maybe not so new , but issues that have been there all along , but I was unable to see them because of my warm weather hunting habbits .... Jim
