Wings...

Blind Squirrel

Well-known member
Howdy--

I am a Hospice volunteer and I recently lost a good friend. He was a B-24 Pilot during WW2. He flew 33 missions over Germany and France. He was one of the true heroes that I have been blessed to have known.

I dug these wings a couple of weeks ago at an old trailer court using my V3i with the 4X6 coil. The wings are marked Sterling and LeVelle & Co. Washington D.C., Phila. Pa. They measure three and three eighths inches.

I wish that I had made this find a few weeks earlier so that I could have given them to my friend.

Very nice find. :twodetecting::whites::thumbup:

A good way to remember him, very nice find.

Sounds like u lost a really good friend those wings will be a great way to remember him.

Perhaps your friend sent those wings just for you. What a great find and a really nice story about a real American! Very appropriate timing.

There is a lot of truth in what you say John, whether one believes in it or not, it has happened to me too many times to just be a consequence.

I agree with with jalon . He sent them wings to you. Good freind there. I sure hate to see these WWII vets leaving us as they are some of the best Americans ever!! But I see a time where you need to rest. HH

Thanks, John. And I think that you and others are right about him guiding my coil. He was not a Hospice patient but when I visit nursing homes I talk with, but mostly listen to, many of the other residents. After listening to some of his stories, I said: "James, you should write a book!" To which he replied: "I have!" When I got home I googled his name and purchased a copy of his book "In Hostile Skies" . So in addition to those wings, I have an autographed copy of his book. As I said in my original post - he was one of the true American heroes that I have been blessed to have known!

Correction: the wings measure 3 and 3 sixteenths of an inch. Sorry about that inaccuracy.
