Will anyone get mad at me if I compare a F5 and a ATpro?

Not me..I am sure interested in your opinion of the two..purely from a technical and capability angle...we know you have great expertise with the F5, so just wondering what you think of the AT pro...heck, you've only had it for a week ...whatcha think? you may have to pm me.

Compare away Mike. I for one would listen and learn.

Why not do a comparison. There is a nice big header on the main forum page that this is now allowed and no longer taboo. As long as members conduct themselves professionally and do comparisons honestly. We have no doubt Mike H. that your comparison will be above board in all aspects as you are a highly respected/experienced forum member. I am darn interested:)
I think no matter what make/model of detector, it is good to get an analysis that is not originating from that particular model's forum page due to owner bias, etc.

Mike, direct comparisons between beeps from different manufacturers (preferably by people who actually know what they're talking about, such as yourself) ought to be regular fare on forums, but as the Guv'ner has pointed out, it tends to lead to problems. Especially when it happens on a specific manufacturer's sponsored forum.

Good idea, but wrong venue. I look forward to seeing your comparison (and perhaps Garrett fans do also?) -- in the Metal Detecting Forum, as the Guv'ner's new policy stipulates.

Good point Dave...."I look forward to seeing your comparison (and perhaps Garrett fans do also?) -- in the Metal Detecting Forum"

Dave J..perhaps FTP could loan Mike H. the new 5x10" DD coil for testing purposes:) if its compatible with the F5.

Venue issues aside, I am always interested in what you have to say, Mike. You can even contrast the new gold model if you want. Dave, feel free to chip in, too. I love this place!

MIKE I WONT!!!

As one who's used both machines quite a bit, I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on both macines. I'm not stuck on a particular brand, if someone else makes a better mouse trap, it promotes innovation and by raising the bar, promoting all detector companies to produce a better product.

To be honest I think the ATP is a great machine, but so is the F5 (one of the best user interfaces on the market IMHO). Without a doubt, in my experience the ATP is better in iron, but they are very different machines. Heck if the ATP had the big beautiful F5 display, a trigger, boost mode and backlight, it would be one killer beeper

Come on Mike, a penny for your thoughts

I've enjoyed and learned from your posts for several years, Mike. Knowing your affinity for the F5, I would imagine you're still partial to it.

I've had a F5 since the fall of 2008 and an AT Pro for close to a year now. I do have a preference, and I'll add my thoughts to your thread when you post over on the Metal Detecting Forum.

I'm very fond of both detectors, and quite comfortable using either. They have snagged me a lot of keepers, and I have gotten stellar customer service from both the fine folks at Fisher:fisher: and Garrett:garrett:.

And kudos to Dave Johnson for being the only lead designer/engineer from any of the manufacturers to share his unique knowledge with us on this forum.

Great! I wasn't going to go to the effort to write it up if there wasn't some interest or I got boo'ed off the board.

I'll put it on the Metal Detecting Forum as I get it together. I believe you will find it interesting and informative, perhaps even supprising.

Hi Terra,
I bought the 5x10 DD coil at the very beginning when they first came out. So yes, I'll be comparing both DD coil sizes.

I also have both of these and would like to read your opinion of them.
I know many will be suprised at how good the F5 really is for a mid priced detector.

Looking forward to the comparison, the AT Pro has been slated over here as purely a toy. Strong words I know!

I have started to use the AT PRO this year and I have used several machines in the past mostly Minelab SE I tell you what, I am getting very comfortable with the AT and I am extremely impressed with it. on 2 hunts this year I have more than paid for the machine with a Belt plate and 2 trade tokens and a standing quarter. I was very impressed with its speed and ability to find targets that had nails in the same hole. The 250.00 token I found had a very large nail in the hole with the Tok and I about crapped myself when I pulled it out. I would put this machine up against the best out there and would be confident that it would hold its own.

What is a "Tok" ? Is that like a hash pipe or something?
