Lions, tigers and bears;)

Has anyone ever encounter a dangerous animal while metal detecting

It would be cool and also edifying to read stories where you used sprays sticks or just yelling

I think theres black bears in this new spot I found

Dogs sneak up on me every now and then..scares the krap outta me! I ran into a couple of raccoons on the beach once too..no troubles there.
When I used to beaver trap in MN, there were a lot of black bears, they'd eat the carcasses of my skinned victims every night. Checking traps on the dark, you could hear them running off..The moose is what really scared me though, they would not run off. If a black bear ever seems to be coming at you, DO NOT play dead! If they are coming at you, it is to eat you, so take your time, get your feet under you, dont turn and run, locate a club of some sort, and you can either kill one or scare one off. Hit him hard in that soft part of the skull, or across the nose. I've not carried a firearm trapping, just a club, actually it was a 2 iron, which is one deadly tool!..More people are attacked by white tail deer in November when they are stupid in rut, and get killed by them more than any other wild animal here in the states. You can handle a black bear over a moose or deer anytime, so hunt away, and maybe you will have a good story to tell! Not many folks get the opportunity to kill a bear by hand, so take advantage of it if the situation comes up!

Bears, wolves, mountain lion, gets real creepy when the shadows get longer. I carried bear spray but still was totally uncomfortable out there alone. Packed it up and headed home. Wolve pack had my concern level the highest.

Our pastor spends a lot of time in fellowship with God on a mountain behind his home.
He has a very nice walking stick that turns into mighty fine spear! This sounds a little
last minute and hopefully this would only happen in a dire circumstance. He claims you
can fall to your back spear point up wedge the back side of the spear into the ground and hold
on firmly and the bear will impale itself as it reaches to you for lunch.

Here we have wild animals in Cantabria.
Wolves, deer, roe deer, wild boars, foxes and various mustelids and bears but there are also very few (+/- 12). Typically these will detect you before you see them and run them, wisely, the human. I've never seen a bear but I found their tracks.
Also horses graze freely and breed of cows here. When I meet them is when more increased my precautions, one never knows what is going to make a cow, even she knows.
But really I have who is afraid of snakes, vipers usually, they live on the ground where we seek.
A greeting and "be careful out there"

Worst ones for me are those darn Metal Detecting Groupies. If you see them coming better run. All they want to do is take you home and look for things that arn't lost. Once I almost made it up a chain link fence (they were mad) for me running.
well they dragged me down sprayed me with perfume told me to go home and explain it to my wife. I'm looking for a pair of sunglasses with rear view mirrors !!

:super:I probably would not be metal detecting if I was that good looking as
to have groupies, that is. Those days of the youthful look is all but gone now
and that would be why the hunt has changed from chasing girls to chasing
coins:smoke:

A hunting buddy and I went to an old school in a not so good neighborhood where we were stalked by an ESSAY! Came close, with his pant below his backside, and stared at us. He'd move here and there, and pace around as though her was nervous. His hand in his pocket the whole time. Guess it could have turned out differently. We kept an Eye on him until he walked back to where he came from. Having worked in prison for 27 years, I found it almost as amusing as dangerous as it could have been. My urban wildlife encounter, I guess.

Besides essays, there could be a bunch of paperbacks, or worse a thesaurus comes charging out of there at you!

While I haven't encountered tons of animals while detecting, I've ran into just about any kind of North American animal out there. They pretty much leave you alone; none of this scary stuff people like to sensationalize. Now my dog comes with me all the time and she won't let anything near me! Ha ha. Feral dogs are the worst. However, one day I was into swinging and I felt a snoot in my butt. That was odd as my dog doesn't do that, so I looked up and saw my dog all happy and waggy looking behind me. Following her gaze, it was someones dog saying, "Hi." He was running with a couple other dogs. My new friend got some good scritches and took off to chase more deer.

Another time I was getting firewood and got a flat tire and changed it. Then got another one! Unbelievable. This was my second load of the day and after the flat tires, the shadows were getting pretty long. I had to walk home in the dark and could barely see the road as the moon had waned to a crescent. Something started following and it was bigger than a raccoon because the grass and branches breaking were kind of loud. I didn't have a flashlight and was pretty disappointed I couldn't see it. Nothing scary. No dog at the time, just little old me.

Wolves and mountain lions are extremely skittish and the only times I've seen them is their hind ends running or trotting away from me. Bears aren't so bad, but if I was in heavy Grizzly country, I would make sure the dog was with me and be more aware. Never been sprayed and have been really lucky in that department. Had a badger chase me when I was a kid, but I was throwing rocks at it like a jerk. It's hard to get most wild animals to come after you, but it can be done if you pester them hard enough. A pack of two or more feral dogs is surprisingly scary.

senda, have you been to the Cave of Altamira? You live in a super awesome place.

I was detecting in a dried up pond on some farmland this past weekend when a loud "MOO" made me jump. A calf of all things snuck up behind me. I just had to laugh, after my heart rate slowed down a bit. By the way, the only find was a '46 wheatie.

Yess, two times visit the Cave of Altamira, and the Cave replica too. I was born at 5 km of this place. In ten km around of my home, you can visit a lot of caverns with paintings prehistorics on the walls, Altamira, Puente Viesgo, El Pendo, Hornos de la Pe

A few months back, I was down on my knees digging a plug when a dog walked right up beside me about 6 inches away from my face. Friendly guy, Lab mix looking.... I almost had a heart attack when he first appeared. Glad he was friendly since he was right in my face!

The only wildlife I encounter is the animal droppings that I accidentally kneel in.
