i deliver beer and on my rurual route (more driving then working) I came up with this ? Why do you hunt? is it for the little kid in you finding money, or is it the WOW factor of finding some nice jewelry or old coins, is it about getting out and getting some exercise what is it to you. those are my reasons.

I used to hunt animals, now I hunt Treasure [Clad mostly]. I know so many guys that have zero interests. what a waste.

I've been interested in burried treasure since I saw the movie Treasure Island as a small child back in the 50's. I really got the bug after seeing the 1st King Tut exhibit at the Chicago Natural History museum. I've been detecting off and on since the 70's. Got away from it for a while, as both of my children were very active in sports.

I grew up on the banks of the Neuse River in NC, my brother and I would spend hours walking the beaches looking for whatever treasure we could find. We would find sharks teeth, fossils, bottles, Civil War relics and arrowheads. I guess this is how I got started. There was an old Civil War earth fort in the woods near my house, one day I ran up on a guy hunting it with a metal detector. I asked him if he had found anything and he reached in his pocket and pulled out a hand full of bullets and a carved round ball. I was hooked right then. I think its the thrill of finding cool stuff that keeps me hunting and the fact that you never know what you might find......................Bill in NC

As stated before. For the thrill of the hunt. Finding and uncovering an item with the reflection of how did it get here and how long has it been buried here. It's also a great hobby and exercise for me as I am a member of the physically challenged and cannot do a lot of other hobbies. It's fun as long as you take the time to enjoy it, learn your machine as you do it, and not get frustrated. As with most hobbies, a bad day of metal detecting is still better than a day at work.

It's the thrill! And the history! As a kid I always wanted to hunt treasure-who didn't? Until last year, even though I metal detected, I didn't consider myself a treasure hunter. This was because the clad and stuff I was finding, while neat, was not actually what I had dreamed of as a kid. So I researched and worked till I found a 'real' treasure to look for..and I found a bunch of relics while searching. Now I'm starting to see all that stuff as treasure as well. So it's the history...wait..the thrill..oh, it's ALL of it! Plus I get paid back every so often for my expenses!

WAIT-maybe it's the ADVENTURE...LOL.. :detecting:

I do it because I love history and holding history in my hand. Especially a piece of history that I have found. Something that would still be buried but that "I" found. I dont do it for money. It is good exercise yes, and I enjoy getting outside and being in the sun. But for me, its the history, and the thrill of maybe finding gold. Havent sold but a couple of things that I have ever found...so...the history.

I metal detect because i love too find and save relics and most coins from disintegration in the soil. Sorta like saving history form time gone by :)

IT'S FUN!

To me it relaxes me and lets me get away from daily problems. Plus there's the thrill of never knowing what you find next.

It's the thrill of the hunt, with the exercise and the only hobby that pays for itself. Very addictive hobby

I hunt, therefore I am.......I think? :rofl:Just kidding!
I started out training with mine detectors back in the mid-eighties as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army. I was fortunate enough to fall in with a group of guys that relic hunted and prospected in their spare time with their own hobby detectors. Those were some really great times. I finally bought my own hobby detector in '89, a Garrett Grand Master Hunter(original). Still have it today and although it's not my main machine anymore, I swing it around every now and again from time to time. I've owned and used several different brands of detectors over the years, but I always come back to my Garretts.
It's just so much fun to dig up goodies out of the ground. It's also great to spend time in the great outdoors and get movin' around.:twodetecting: I'm very blessed to have a wonderful wife who enjoys metal detecting and prospecting with me. These are the best of times! Happy Hunting!:)

Why do I hunt? I have asked myself that many times especially when I am exhausted, every muscle/joint in my body is aching, sun burnt and got 7 coins in 5 hours of detecting. Your out there alone, almost!!! Sometimes I look up while detecting and become aware of my surroundings and it takes my breath away. It is so huge and beautiful and I am so small. Yet it is safe. I sense the vast power of the earth, water and the sky, yet there is such gentleness. It wants me to live and enjoy its presence. The nonsense of the every day world and all its fluff is gone and only the real is left to be. It is meditation, relaxing, and pulls you back into who you really are.
Remember guys this is written by someone who has never been considered normal...
Happy Trails......Z
