Why are you sending your AT Pros in for service?

Hi all,

If everything goes right, I'll be swinging an AT Pro in about a week and a half.. Can't wait!

In preparation, I'm reading through this AT Pro board and notice a lot of posts of people returning their detectors for this or that. Not all the posts are clear why.

Just wondering what the main issues are that people are having. Is it just a matter of being unfamiliar with the unit? Water leak problems? Connection problems? Electronics? From what I've read, some of the issues have been software related requiring upgrades or something.

What else is going on?

You might want to direct that question to Garrett. Give them a call. They have all the statistical data on what needed to be repaired and what didn't. Yes, some people are sending their machines because of lack of knowledge/experience and had the perception that there were faults. And then there were some machines which had to be sent in to be repaired. As mentioned previously, there are thousands flying out the door. Putting it into prospective, a very tiny amount are probably getting repaired, and by a company who really values their customers and backs up the products also. If you have concerns about leakage, electrical problems etc, call Garrett and ask for what things you need to look out for.

Good luck with your AT Pro. I hope you get a lot of great finds with it.

My problems were,

Water leak, started with moisture (fog like) showing up behind screen, then water at 6 weeks.

Electronics, won't retain custom settings, factory settings wrong.

Falsing at end of swings or if you bump something.

Other issues are simply endemic to the machine, ether you accept them or you don't.

Good Hunting

I had to send mine in for Erratic falsing signals that started after a water hunt. Prior to intoducing it into the water I used it for about 1 month with absolutely NO problems. I am not sure if it took on some water or what...repair will let me know....and I will post the results when I get them. I just know that I am gutted right now not having the ability to water detect...can't wait to get it back and get back out in the water. Mine was definitely not a lack of user knowledge problem...I'm sure it would still be working perfectly if not for the water...but its made for that and thats why I bought it. Even though I have an issue with mine and its in for repair, I am still recommending it to all my friends...simply can't beat the price and versatility!!!!!!! I'm planning on doing a full season with it in the water and hoping it does great and will not have to invest in an Excal. I used mine on many a rainy day with no problem....it was only after submerging it in waist deep water that issues arose. With it being the most popular model on the market right now I'm sure they are cranking them out in full force, there is bound to be a few that show up with issues.....but the positive feedback from users shows that its a great machine. Make sure you shop around and contact the sponsors of this website...you can find some pretty awesome deals!! I had an issue with one of my V3i's which is obviously a MUCH more expensive machine...so issues can arrise from any models...don't let the problems of a few of us deter you from your purchase.

Considering that I am likely buying one within a few days, it would be nice to know if I will receive a problem-free detector. But even if I don't, I know that either my dealer or Garrett will resolve any issues. Best guarantee in the land !!

i know someone that had to send theirs in 4 times and now hes affraid to use the one he has, i know when a new detector is released you can expect some bugs but 4 times!!! CladKing

I bought mine and had to send it in due to some falsing and the depth wasn't what it should have been when I performed an air test. I phoned Garrett and let them know the problems I was experiencing and they sent me a new machine....WORKS GREAT!!! I've had the machine for about a month and have been water detecting about 5 times but only submerged it a few times and still no problems. I live in Washington State and detect in the rain almost daily and have had no issues. At one point I THOUGHT I had a falsing issue with the new machine but realized later it was due to being close to a cell phone/radio antenna. This truly is a great machine and I would hate to be without it!

I bought a new Ford truck, and had to take it back to the dealer 6 times the first month for everything from noisy brakes to rattles, air conditioner not performing right, and on and on.Please don't judge this detector by a handful that has had problems.thousands have been sold that have had no problems. It happens with everything ever made. Our store has sold several and not had one phone call about a problem. It gets amplified in here because we have so many using it that keeps us daily informed.Rest assured though Garrett will make it right just like ford did for me :)

My first one had the falsing problem and sent it back. Worked great until I took it in the water, must have leaked because it went crazy. I called Garrett, I sent mine back on a Monday and had a brand new one that Wensday. Garrett service is super great. Even with these issues I will never give up on my PRO. The proformance out ways the issues. JMO

I have had mine just a little over a week now, and the only problem I am having is needing a larger digging tool to find the deep targets! I spoke with the guys at kellyco and garrett before I purchased, to make sure that they had solved the big problems, and they both assured me that they had. As far as moisture getting into the unit, I suspect that could easily happen if the o-rings get pinched a little when you connect the coil or headphones. I don't water hunt, so I don't think I'll have to worry about that. Maybe they really did get all of their bugs worked out!

Well there are many at pros being returned and repaired is not a minimal issue as you say edmonton.

Mine first was falsing, then they returned one that didnt even detect metal, then they did send me another one and this one has got water inside the screen and has gone crazy.

Now im waiting for an answer but i expect a new at pro control box.

And i hope this one is sealed because i was expecting to use this detector a lot in the sea this summer but looking how many people has had problems with it on the water i have my doubts.

it is a great detector tho. But there has been many problems and many repairs and replacements, we have to admit it.

Anyway garrett did always take care of it but i guess the problem here is most of all of technical issues regarding the design of the detector itself.

lol Sniffy is it a design problem? lol

4 times would be unacceptable...I would demand a 100% refund for the cost of the detector and a refund of all my return shipping costs. Lemon Law.

Thats what is happening with me. Tomorrow 3th time i send it and they didnt pay me the shipping costs. I would ask for a sniper coil for the shipping costs. I think its fair doesn it? its gonna be more than 100 dollars in shipping costs and custom taxes of returned units in the end.

Im also afraid of getting this unit again in the water. Thats what im asking. I want them to tell me if i better avoid water of not, because i prefer to not water hunt than to simply not hunt.

For those of you who have had problems from water, are you using it in fresh water or salt? Or to ask better, did you have problems after you used it in salt water or fresh water?

I'm still trying to figure out why Garrett is not recommending the AT Pro for use in the surf. If you look in the catalog at the grid that shows all the models and their recommended uses, there is no check box for the AT Pro and Surf. Maybe there's something in the salt water that's affected the o-rings or plastic in the control housing or even the headphone connector?

Just trying to understand.

I've only used it in fresh water, about 8 times total before it gave up the ghost totally.

I can only imagine how long it would last in salt water!

i used it 30 minutes on salt water and then just like 20 min more in fresh water like 2 weeks later. It went crazy on the fresh water. The connectors were so closed that i couldnt even open them with my fingers, because of salt. I had to open them with pliers. I think the water gets trough the screen. Nothing to do about the conectors in my opinion.

Garrett have a reputation for reliability and good service. Even other brand users would no doubt have heard of their reputation in these areas, whether they are fans of their products or not ,so I have no doubt the AT PRO will prove to be a solid and totally reliable unit , they will iron out any bugs because that is"' simply the way they are"". I think the test for any manufacturer, is the pride they take in in there base , cheapest products. With Garrett these are rock solid reliable and well made , we know they dont view them any less than their top of the line products because they dont abandon us when there is any issue. So as for the Pro, I just know any issues will be resolved , and we will have a rock solid detector because that has always been their mindset
