Who uses the M6 and 6T?

Hi I am in the market to get a MD and I am looking at the M6 as well as the 6T. In your opinion what are the good and bad points about either one of them? Any info would be a big help. Thank you

I have the 6T. It is a light detector that is very user friendly. I have never owned an M6 or even tried one. From what I have read on this forum the 6T will give it a run for its money in every way. The only negative side of the 6T is the choice of a smaller coil. There is currently none available at this time. Whites says one will be out before Spring. If at some point you are going to purchase a DFX or MXT the ability to switch coils with the M6 is appealing. The only detectors you can switch Prizm coils with is another Prizm. The 6T is a blast to operate. I really am looking forward to getting out in the Spring thaw with it. Either choice is going to give you a quality detector.

Every thing I've seen and heard about the 6T has been very upbeat other than the lack of a small coil. But as mentioned, there's supposed to be one available before too long.

I have the M6 and it is really quite good. It is based on the MXT and operates much the same. The availability of many coils and being they fit the better Whites machines is a plus. I love mine. The only complaint I would have is its weight( I also have a Tesoro and what a difference).

Very well said Gregl01 I feel the same way bought my M6 easy to use and very effective. And there is a lot to be said having the coils that are available for it.

Well I have to thank you all for your input as I feel my first MD is going to be the M6. Like what is said there are more coils for the m6 and I found out the 6T works on a higher frequency. Now I just have to find one on the market and see where I can get the best deal. Thanks again for all your replies the info you gave me really helped me out. Steve

I'm waiting for the smaller Prizm coil before I buy a 6t. I have had two M6's though. Very nice machines indeed. But after 2 hours of continuous hunting gets pretty heavy. The M6 is around 4.3 pounds while the 6t is 3 pounds. Plus I've gotten accustomed to notch discrimination. So I'm going to give the 6t a whirl when the small coil is available. That is unless there is a release of another detector this spring?

a decision to buy a Prizm 6T would be a bad one, either. Both are very good detectors, but they are different. The primary disadvantage to the Prizm 6T, right now, is the lack of search coil selection. That will change soon with the release of a 'shooter' coil for it.

I use them both and like them both, as well as the MXT. Matter of fact, by ghost town vacation in late March I'll have a new powder coated MXT, and at this pointy I am not sure if I'll have my M6 or not. I know I'll have the Prizm 6T, for several reasons.

With the MXT I wouldn't really 'need' the M6, even though it could share search coils, and does have the Tone ID feature for coin hunting and such. But the 6T does offer a similar fast-acting Auto-Trac circuity and very quick adjustment of any function with then operating thumb. For ME, it works well for many applications, and it is so easy to demonstrate to a newcomer to the hobby and simple to use ... while having ample features ... that it has become my back-up/loaner unit of choice. One that I can show a property owner when inviting them to 'join in the fun' when trying to gain access to private property.

I did a 3-part write-up on the Prizm 6T after I bought mine and had some field time in. It is rather lenghty and is a 3-part post. You can read the Part 1 here, http://www.findmall.com/read.php?31,845860,845860#msg-845860 and then check out the Part 2 and Part 3 below, if you're interested. You're welcome to shoot me an E-mail if you have any particular questions regarding either the 6T or M6. I like them both and use them both. Just make sure you get a smaller-than-stock search coil for that M6 to compliment the type of searches you'll be doing.

Happy Hunting!

I use the M6 and love it to death. The weight doesn't bother me in the least. My wife also uses the M6 and she has no problem with the weight. I have never used the 6T but what I have heard about it, except for the lack of coil selection, is all good. The M6 runs at 14.7KHZ while I beleive the T6 runs at some where around 8KHZ. The M6 with the higher frequency should be better for small gold than the 6T. I know I find my fair share of small gold ear studs and ankle braclets with my M6 not to mention small gold pinky rings. My wife and I also use the 6x10 DD coil as our main coil. This also reduces the weight. In real trashy areas we use the 4x6 DD. We neither one use the stock coil. The DD coils give much better trash separation than the stock 950and in the fields and parks we hunt today you need all the trash separation you can get.

Concerning the notch discriminatin, the notch desc. on the 6T notches out a range of targets and some of these could be really good ones like small gold etc. You can use the 7 tone ID on the M6 and your ears to notch out targets you don't want to dig. Once you get use to what the M6 is telling you this process really become effective.

you have 9 audio tones rather than 7. You don't HAVE to reject a particular notch segment, but you CAN, if desired. Personally, I seldom do, preferring to listen to the audio response. I do sometimes knock out the first iron segment.

really referring to the balance of the unit. I've noted many times where they stand only 5'5" to 6', but they have the rods extended to their fullest length, or almost, and that will cause all sorts of problems, especially with making them nose heavy and poorly balanced. A 'proper' rod length adjustment makes the units comfortable and lets them be operated at a proper sweep speed as well. Too often you will see those with a long rod extension sweeping way too quickly.

As for the frequency thing and gold jewelry, over the last several years I have found more gold jewelry with the 6.59 kHz IDX Pro than others, and I've noted good responses so far with my Prizm 6T. Better than the M6/MXT? Let me just say on-par with them. Yes, they could have an advantage, but it's not much.

Wow it is getting harder and harder now with the choice. With so many options between the two .... the 6T has a higher frequency and the M6 doesn't. The M6 "seems" to pick up more gold than the 6T but mostly it is silver and copper that most people find. It is getting to the point where I might have to research and see what other brands are out there that are quite similar and maybe have better options. I was leaning with the M6 as my first one but now there is the 6T that people are really liking..... so many decisions........ the price range for these machines are in my budget I won't be going any higher as I am just getting started even though I have rented and borrowed these before. I really like the idea of going just by sound rather than just see whats on the screen. Not sure any more what to really look at.I just might get the garret ace250 for a starter and then like every one else up grade and keep the 250 as a back up. But then I would rather put the money of the 250 to better use.... This sucks because I don't want to just gat any machine but I want one that in time will work for me and be very enjoyable to hunt with. I look at it this way it is like a hunting dog. You don't want to be working for the dog all the time the dog should be working for you and with you. If not the dog has to go. Just another way of looking at things.

Steve

P.S. don't get me wrong every one who has posted so far has really helped me more than you realize and I like the info coming in. Thank you Steve

Just stick with a Whites and you can't go wrong!

I agree. You will find a wide variety of detectors out there. The best one is always a matter of opinion. There is one fact. Whites is a quality company with a loyal following. Buying a Whites is a good move.

I'm guessing when I get the 6t I would only be notching out the iron. Then the 6t would have a 7 tone ID.

I know what you are saying it gets very confusing.if you wernt confused before you are now.All I can tell you is I love my M6 .Like they said you cant go wrong with a white detector resale is great on them and they are built very well. Also I have a Ace 250 as a back up .Wife loves it uses all the time But it is not great on the beach lot of falsing does not like salt or black sand on the other hand the M6 works great every were. Its your choice you are the one using it.Coils Make a big difference you have a lot to chose from with the M6 and if you update down the road you can use them on the other white detectors that means you don't have to buy them again.Hop that helps in soom way best of luck. Mike I use the M6 Beach hunter I.D. Surfmaster P.I Cant go wrong with white

Gotta tell ya...Don't let more information (about any product) complicate things for you. Want a dependable hunting dog...get a Whites. If you like more trips to the vet...go lesser. (Just don't take a tumble or expose them to excessive moisture.) Quality is quality and even if service is needed, Whites is on it like stink! Tellin' ya.........

I agree with Monte on the weight issue, I am a woman of 120 lbs, at 5.5" in height. I just adjust my rod to a shorter length and it is a big difference, thats why the rods are adjustable for comfort of user. I have no problem with the weight. I dont care how light your detector is after 8 hrs of swinging you will feel it!
