Who makes (a good) shielded coil(s) for Whites DFX/MXT?

I have not heard of anyone making a shielded type coil for the new MXT/DFX/M6 line of detectors.

You could experiment with making your own Faraday shield and see if those results are acceptable.

Hunting under a big horkin transformer? power lines?

There are a few places that I have detected where I have had quite a bit of trouble from electrical interference, either from electric cow fences, overhead power lines, and in my latest encounter, a buried telephone cable so powerful that it must have run directly to the president's desk. I was detecting with Mountain Man, he had an MXT; once he got about 20 yards or so from the buried cable, he wasn't having anymore problem with it. But me, swinging the mighty DFX, I could not get rid of the interference unless I was 75 yards or further away from that cable. Basically it made the detector beep every 3 or 4 seconds. It was so bad, I had to hunt in the all metal mode; hardly any interference in that mode, then I would recheck any interesting responses in the discriminated mode. It works, but it gets to be a real hassle. Below are some simplified views of the problem I'm having...

Hmmmm... I checked, the Eliminator is only a 6" coil, not good for searching vast acreage of fields. Jimmy does have a new HOTFOOT (Bigfoot) coil with improved depth for the DFX/MXT... AND, he quotes this;

"An added bonus is that it helps to reduce 60 cycle interference, such as transformers and power lines.The BIGFOOT is 18 inches long and 3 1/2 inches wide. This model is especially designed to work on White's Model DFX."

At $229.95 it isn't cheap though. I wonder if Whites offers it as an accessorie? Hmmmm.... story # 11 :lol:

Bad thing about both 3 and 15 Khz is the fundamental frequency of 60 Hz (cycles). They are multiples (harmonics) of the 60 cycle frequency and as such are more susceptible to interference from those pesky transmission lines.

Try the 15Khz and see if that one works a bit better. It is further away from the fundamental 60 Hz frequency.

You could also try the XLT in that area instead of the DFX. That is a 6.9 Khz machine and is not in the harmonic range of 60 Hz. However, you will still get the interference just because of the nature of that live phone wire.

Buried phone lines are a different monster all together. You are just not going to get away from that interference unless you clip it......by accident of course.

I hadn't thought of just using the lower frequency, good idea, that would no doubt help. If I ever get to detect that place again, or another one along that route, I will try it. I did reduce power, put on a smaller coil, and turned Transmit Boost off, but it didn't make any difference. Thanks Butch for the input.
