White's Vs Minelab,I'll step up to the plate

Checking in dc phase by holding trigger in on ground without a target.... I am mainly using 4 filters. Trying to run a few more programs I was sent before year is over. I am planning on having detector checked out for next year. I am one of the fortunate ones that has a authorized repair center 14 miles away...so I will take it in sometime next year...for a tune up...

Right now have not been able to get out...did ok the other day...almost $5 in clad and a 46-d wheatie...was about 24 degrees...but i have not been able to continue testing with new stock coil due to a back strain...must have been from the cold that day...and a snowstorm... i will get back out for more tests soon...:detecting:

thanks may go with the 6 x 10 first because i still have that $100 gift certificate for accessories from White's. I do not think Kellyco would accept it....I may contact White's first though to see if a local dealer could accept...but have a feeling it only only be used directly at Whites..

Gregg using DC phase does not really give you an accurate reading on the ground mineralization, etc. Jeff has a way of doing it correctly, or more accurately and is discussed on page 43 of his book. You may want to give that method a try.

Greg i got thinking about our depth problems. Since no two machines are created equal... i wonder since 15 kHz is more sensitive to surface coins if our detectors need to be recalibrated. Perhaps to much 15 kHz is being used. I say that, because i sent mine in once and they said mine needed recalibrated.... too much 3 kHz. Now mine is about like yours. Doesnt miss a thing at 5" or so.

Larry,
Yea, The 3 filter on the DFX works for me about as well as the 4 filter most places...I have had to go to 6 filter to get a better reading some places. I like the 2 filter when I can use it.

I have a problem with your statement, and I quote,"Ground balancing in bad soil areas, or with any other type of interference is the downfall of White's detectors." Was this statement directed at the DFX or all White's detector models? Because this not true with the two White's detectors I now use! Or it is not true of the four Tesoro models that i use and hunt with on an alternating basis, as the is no one perfect detector in my detecting armament.

I'll answer that question!! I have tried ground balancing the DFX on several occasions in bad soil areas and outside interference such as power lines. I got that familiar not balance sound and reading on the detector. Its pretty simple really, I just hated re balancing again and again when i just turned it on. I mean I wanted to hunt with it, not goof around for 5 min trying to balance the detector. The older whites never had that issue.

The next question is

Howdy Greg..............I don't know why Tom posted his thoughts pertaining to the DFX on the White's Main Detecting Forum anyway. He should have brought it up on the DFX classroom forum if he likes a "HOT TOPIC"!

OK I never started this topic. I just responded. Thats easy enough. LOL, but if that's your opinion your entitled to it. I just thought I'd give an honest response. I have used both so I thought I could do that.

Just as an example, you wouldn't go golfing with one club in your bag would you?

Hey I'm a scratch golfer. LOL you never know.

Hello Greg.........I am done with this thread,I was only responding to migolddigger aka Tom.His broad statements about White's detectors in general just rubbed me wrong way.I was trying to "bait" him out of seclusion
with my statements to you about not responding to our posts to him.
When I stated that he was bored or it was too cold to detect,or possibly his Exploder was broke,I was sure we would get a response from him.I'll be looking for future posts by him,if he makes the same mistakes,I'll be jumping all over it.Good luck in your search for the "perfect" metal detector, but i am sure it does not exists, but have fun looking anyway.HH Randy

Randy. You have got me all wrong. The White's xlt series is a great detector for modern coin and jewelery hunting. I never said they were a bad detector did I??. I just stated from 1-6 inches they were great for clad farming. From 6-12 I want my Explorer II. It's that simple. The Whites detector is great in some parts of the country where the clay base is around 5 inches. In Michigan here it's about 8-12 and sometimes deeper.
Also what mistakes are you talking about???
I also stated you can set up the Explorer to sound different in different area's. You can change the sounds on the explorer to suit your environment. You can make a coin sound round and fluty by using Audio-one and all the iron sounds will sound short and choppy. You can also make all the Iron sound low, while all the copper and silver sound High. Heck, You can lay a nail right on top of a silver dime and hear the round sound of silver and the low growl of iron. Your talking to a person who has had success with both detectors. Like I said it depends on the type of hunting you want to do. In Michigan on average, the old coins are deeper. So it's up to you, Clad farming, or relic and old coin hunting. You make the choice. Oh by the way my Minelab Explorer II and My Fisher CZ-20 are put away for the winter time, the frost and snow are here in Michigan.

Tom

Hi Gregg Pap is right that DC phase is not an exact reading of the degree of mineralisation but it does give an indication. XLT gives the least accurate and the MXT seems most near.
I'm still not certain your machine is up to spec. Remember that Whites themselves said my machine was running within spec. but it took three returns to the factory to get the performance up and I was lucky enough to catch the manager of Whites at a Rally and get him to try it himself which was the real turning point.
As for authorised repairers I had a similar problem with a Fisher CZ. Repairer said fine, I knew it wasn't (though it air tested well). Sent it back to the factory and it was returned sounding sharper and with a two inch in ground leap in performance. As for tune ups a Fisher CZ has 21 or 22 trimmers that have to be adjusted in relation to each other, XLT I think has one. Don't know about the DFX being a rework of a Minelab but tune ups with detectors has gone the same route as with modern chipped cars.

I own whites and minlab and have to say each is tops.
IF YOU HAVE ONE OR THE OTHER OR BOTH YOU ARE DOING GOOD
The key is to learn the detector
