Whites TDI Field Test

Tom,

Thanks for stopping by to answer some of the more technical questions. I was in such a hurry to get the vid up for Whites fans/users to see I failed to mention it to you. My apologies for that.

Hi Cosmic,

I made a quick video somewhat like what you asked for. Here is a link.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ibDh4k-DuY

Now, there isn't that much aluminum in the video because it was more of a spur of the moment thing just to see if I could make a video.

Anyway, There is an aluminum tab from a pop can in the video but there isn't a screwcap. The screwcap will generate a response in the high conductive mode basically just like a silver or copper coin.

I really have not had any problems to speak of with nails if the controls are set properly and I still have decent depth. I can increase the depth by advancing the GB control to 9 and search at that setting. I will then double check suspected targets again with a GB setting of about 5. If I still get a repeatable signal, I dig. Very intermittent signals or no signals indicated something other than a silver or copper coin.

I am sure I am missing a few things, but using this technique, I still have an extremely high good target to trash ratio.

I caution people though. The TDI is not a hard detector to learn, but it is different. It will be noisier and will not separate certain junk such as screwcaps, so it is not the perfect discriminator. Keep in mind this discrimination thing is a very late addition and as such, is not fully documented. The TDI will do well in really bad ground and that is where it really excels.

The trick is to learn the features of the TDI and the different modes. Probably the biggest mistake will be to not fully understand or learn the different features and modes. I am sure they will be confusing at first, but if learned correctly, the use of the TDI will become second nature. If not, the TDI can be quite confusing.

I recently purchased a Whites TDI I like the way this unit works, all of my VLF units have a real depth problem here on the columbia Snake and Yakima rivers and anywhere in the vacinity of the rivers the black sands really limits the abilities of my Eureka Gold, Garrett GTI 2500, Fisher Coinstrike,Pioneer 505, my GTI 2500 goes deeper than the rest of my VLFs but not by very much, unless I install the 12 inch coil and run in allmetal mode, The TDI is light and easy to use and I think it is best used for gold nuggets that was its original intention, but the factory did not provide very much info about the detector so it is a kind of learn as you go by yourself, coil selection guide would be a nice feature and just others experiences with the unit would be a very good learning tool.
happy hunting
everyday above ground is a good day!

I had a whites pulse waterproof detector it was light weight and did well at the beach one thing with pulse be ready to dig deep for every thing. I was digging coins a ft deep at the beach.
