Whites DF Question????

thanks Craig

i think that was my main concern that i would miss the deep targets with the threshold chatter but thanks for the info on that!

will have another go tomorrow and see how i go.

i went straight down to the wet sand found a coin straight away and then nothing thought i must have broke it :detecting: it will take some getting used to but i see it goes deep i haven't got a scoop yet ( will be getting one asap) and took down a spade glad i did :clapping:

i have been using a silent running VLF so it may take me awhile to get used to this machine but i am sure it will be worth it !!

i read somewhere that i can turn up the volume inside some how do you know how to do that?

this sure is one beast of a machine :surprised:

thanks again for your help!!

Don't expect a smooth threshold it does chatter but the chatter can be smoothed out by adjusting the gain and a tiny bit of pulse delay... you can also quiet it down with the threshold...

I usually run my threshold at 3 pm but a beach I have hunted in the past requires me to tone it down to 2 pm because of chatter...

Even if it does chatter a deep whisper can still be heard but you must be focusing on your detector... I listen for the slightest break, its almost like a blank spot in the threshold these are your deepest whispers and most likely a keeper target...

I tried to edit my post and remove threshold and replace it with "gain" and it wouldn't let me... wtf is up with that?

You really have to listen or should I say focus on the threshold and block everything else out... I tried editing my post... my settings are 2 pm on the gain, the pulse delay just clicked on to 7 am and the threshold around 1 pm depending on the wind...

I have taken a few guys out and found whisper targets, marked the spot and asked them to go over it with their DF and they couldn't hear it until I explained to them what a whisper was sometimes... and the best way to describe it is a break in the threshold or a smoother spot... I'm very good with my DF, I'm not being cocky at all :)

thanks again for your help!!

It really depends with the wind... usually I run it 12:30 to 1 sometimes when its really windy I'll move it to 2 pm... I like it a little louder than most ;)

OK great thanks will give it a go, so having it loud the deep targets are a brake in the threshold at 1st?

will be a bit better off now for tomorrows hunt

thanks heaps!

Yeah a break or a dropping out of the chatter is the best way to describe it... a blank spot..its repeatable though... its too early for me ;)

no that's good makes sense to me so having threshold up 12.30 1 helps with that makes sense sort of opposite to what i am used too with the VLF :detecting:
early for you late for me.

cheers and thanks!!

There is a screw slot electrical pot inside the battery/electronics compartment that someone posted about a while back.

The person said it is a volume adjustment, but I don't know.

I called my dealer and every contact number for White's dealers in my area and no-one knew about the adjusment's purpose.

I would have called the factory, but they didn't open until 12 oclock local time/8AM Pacific Time.

My dealer told me he would call and let me know. (I'm not one to risk damaging my detector without knowing what I'm doing!)

You'll hear from me one way or the other.

I would rather not have the rubber in the ear-cups as they bind against my big ears,

My local dealer was a little slow getting back to me, so I called White's Service Dept in Oregon and the tech there told me that the pot was for volume control.

Using a small screwdriver gently tweek counter-clockwise to lower volume and clock-wise to increase.

Now I can get rid of those rubber disks that have worked well, but been so uncomfortable.

I prefer to have threshold at just steady (it does wobble a little) with volume at a comfortable setting.

My threshold knob is usually at a tiny bit before 12 Oclock. (I suspect each machine may be a little bit different.)

Now I'll have to play with the settings a little to get the volume I want at the threshold setting I prefer.

Word of caution, Make certain the O ring seal is clean and lightly lubricated (I carefully wipe off excess with a clean, dry cloth) with silicone grease before re-installing it and that all mating surfaces are dry and clean. Also, go easy with the screwdriver as these tiny devices are delicate and must never be forced!

thanks for the info on the volume control, it was blowing a gale yesterday and i couldn't hear a thing when i was into the wind i read somewhere tape up the weep holes on the phones to stop the wind whistling in which i could hear that was about all i could hear was the wind so i taped those see how it goes and if i need to thanks for the pot position very good thanks!!
will adjust that if i need too!

i just opened i see the screw little white one not going to touch it yet see how the tape does then will have a go at the screw but thanks hey!

yes the o ring how do you see if its right look from the side ? it is not easy to tell if its locked in right?

i will have to fiddle around with whats best for me with gain and threshold but i thank both you and Craig for your settings gives me an idea of where to start and that the in out wobble i will call it is normal.

oh i did dig a 10 cent coin at some ridiculous depth i was in shock so it works i just have to get used to it and find what works best for me oh and yes its hard work all i can say is what a beast its like the stock car of detectors !! but i am sure from whats being said has to be treated like a rolls Royce in the listening department.

oh lucky yellow is my favourite colour :clapping:

i will learn it and it will get me fit for sure!

well ordering a scoop today!

will take her out for another spin this arvo and on a beach that i do pretty well on with my VLF so see how it goes!

cheers and thanks!

AJ... when I hunt in the wind I wear a hooded jacket and that helps a ton....
