Which price level detector should we be using?

My Compadre has the 7" coil. I love it.

I've not tried the 5.75 on Compadre. I like the 5.75 on my Euro Sabre. I keep a 7" on my Silver.

That works good for me.

HH,

hello everyone, ive been doing this great hobby of ours for over 25 years, and tried just about every machine out there. some were good, some were ok, and some just downright sucked! imagine, if you will: the good man who owns the simple to operate, inexpensive machine has a bad day detecting, not finding much and thinks to himself, "hmmm, i think i need a better machine. i know this one well, its paid for itself, but i think im missing stuff." on the other hand, the good man who bought a top shelf, expensive machine says to himself, " i really do like this machine. lots of bells and whistles. a real step up from where i started. too bad its a pain to program. really time consuming. be a heckuva hit if someone stole it. it cost a lot, so that alone makes it superior." ...so now you see. it seems that more is less, and less really is more. many of us have thought these same thoughts many times, only to return to what we know best. what that "best" for you is, i dont know, and i cant tell you whats right for you. you can rest assured, my friend that the metal detector makers already know how we feel about our machines, how often were likely to switch models, how much were willing to pay, etc. i for one believe that there should be no monetary limits on what makes you happy. i will greet a fellow mder with a radio shack model the same way i would a fella with a very expensive unit. but i do think its important to stay as simple as possible. ive never felt the need to buy a 40 dollar digging tool; or spend more than 400 bucks for a detector. personally, id be scared to death to take a higher priced detector out my door! the truth of the matter is, the mid level detectors are finding just as much if not more than the higher priced detectors are. seen it hundreds of times. and pretty much across the board. just my 2 cents, hh,

That's right GRAY GHOST,

Reminds me of a little story.

I had my Silver out and was hunting at a park. This fellow, who I had talked to at the park before, brought his Whites XLT.
We detected togather for a while. We compared hits and I was able to ID coins as well as he could. I actually felt like I could do it better.
The big difference came when we kind of split up a little. He was going along digging coins. I was digging more trash. Then I got a gold pendant.
He said let me see that. He put it on the ground and swung his coil and said with a little supprise. "That registers as aluminum! I wouldn't have dug that."

In the end he had some coins and I had some coins and a couple of peices of jewelry.

I felt OK about what happened until the next time I was there and saw holes all over the place. Some of them were not even covered back up.
It had rained and the dirt from the holes had washed into the grass. I had to carry dirt to fill the holes back up.

The funny thing is I was finding coins next the holes, or in the holes he dug. He had a Bulls Eye pin pointer. Who knows what happened.

Maybe I should be careful who I hunt with.

HH,

Guess I must agree with the Gray Ghost, at least in part...
I'd be pretty nervous leaving a whiz-bang thousand dollar machine in my pickup truck shell un-attended...
...and I couldn't get NEAR the choppy saltwater surf with one!

Never-the-less, from what I've seen, across ALL the forums, the BEST and largest PILES of Au are presented by the fellows using the more expensive water machines. Of course, there are exceptions...

Relics and caches on the dry? Same thing.
The tests ALL show, even after setting aside spectacular anomalies, $'s will get you deeper.

The fun factor?
Well, that's priceless!
HH

gifford designed the compadre to use a ed-180 discriminating circuit, which is one of the best "disc" circuits ever put into a metal dtector, along with the similar ed-120 discriminator which is found in the silver u-max!..
