which 5" search coil?

IDguy

New member
I am thinking of buying a smaller (5") search coil for my quattro to penetrate deep in trashy areas. Does anyone have some feedback on who makes the better coil? Also, do they pinpoint accuratetly? Thank You!

I have the 5" coil, that I bought from Kellyco. It seems to separate trash great, and go reasonablly deep. How reasonablly, I'm not sure, because I've never measured the holes, but I'd say probably 5 to 7 inches or maybe more. I honestly don't know for sure, but it really separates the trash. Guess, you better go further on this one and find someone with some other brands and maybe some true depth readings to make your informed, decision. Good luck, and let us know how it works out. I'm always curions on any of this stuff. Marc.

The SunRay X-5 Stealth is an excellent coil. I am using it on the Quattro and SE. Happy hunting ID.

As kind of an "adjunct" to my post of the 5", it really pinpoints well in my opinion. It separates much better and pinpoints, but I don't know how it compares to the other 5 inchers on the market. Marc.

I have the 5" round and the 4.5 x 7 eliptical. I used the 5" round with my Quattro, then the Explorer II, and now the Explorer SE. I put the 4.5 x 7 Exelerator on there and it has better depth than the 5", is shaped better for working in trash, and allows the Explorer to run at or near max sensitivity and gets GREAT depth.

Here are some pics of it...

It's a nicely built coil...

Here it is compared to the 12.5" and the stock 10.5". Light as a feather but no LIGHTWEIGHT!

How does it compare depth wise with the ML 8 inch? It has got to have better target separation.

It has nearly the depth of the stock 10.5" with better separation than the 5". I don't have the 8" but I doubt it would have more depth than the 4.5 x 7.

With these small coils, it's not about depth at all though, as these posts below that I made a while back will show. That said, it's a depth-demon.

Ah, heck, Mike...., what do you know about detectors????:(:sadwalk::clapping::crazy:JUST KIDDING, JUST KIDDIING, BRO. :surrender::super::|You know just looking at your pictures of all this gets my blood pumping again. I love the looks of that little ellipictical coil and the other ones intrigue me too. I didn't know you used those REALLY, big ones. How do you like those? Mike, you know I gotta "jab" you in the ribs from time to time and hope I don't get my (you know what) kicked doing it.:(:|All in fun and thanks again for coming over here to share this stuff. You know I, at least love it!!!!!:|

I like 'em BOG sometimes, you know? Like in the fields and woods and at the beach, the stock 10.5 is a little too small. The 12.5 gives a nice wide footprint with nice balance and no extra weight. The little one is nice for trashy sites. The 10.5 stocker doesn't get much play these days.

Click on the link below and you will see it under the "Exelerator" section.

But I would recommend just CALLING them, to get it handled quicker. Call 1-800-898-6673 and ask for JW and he'll take good care of you.

Yes I have only herd good things about the 4.5x7 eliptical coil . I've been told that it's a deep seeker and great on seperation in trashy areas . Im not a big fan of the Kellyco coils due to their poor quality of products but this coil sounds like a real good one . I may have to buy one for my arsenol . Good luck to all !

Well I have the 12.5 and the 4.5 x 7, both from KellyCo and both are excellently constructed and of obvious quality. The 12.5 is a seamless and sealed unit, entirely ABS and sturdy as hell, yet well balanced and very lightweight. The 4.5 x 7 is well designed, extremely sturdy, incredibly stable, and pinpoints like a dream, not to mention it's feather weight. Both are well worth the price. These are the only two KellyCo coils I've had so I don't have anything else to compare. I previously had a Sunray 12.5" for my Sovereign Elite and there's little difference between them to me.

Mike, now that I think of it, the 5" coil I have I ordered from Kelly co, although I believe it's an Excalibur coil that Kelly co sold me. It's pretty OK, separates trash really good, but it's round instead of elliptical and I'm thinking it probably doesn't go as deep as your 4.5x7. Gee, how did I miss that? I read all they're adds before I purchased it, but I sure like the sound of your elliptical small coil. It's probably lighter too, because mine is a solid coil. Darn,....:|well maybe some day, I can get one as a second small coil.

Yea, I like your"attitude" on that!!!:|, the 12.5 is gonna give you more "coverage" per sweep, and I figure it all adds up, plus "maybe", some more depth to boot.

Mike, one more "quickie" question on all this. Did you use some of these coils on your Quatro when you had it or were they all used with your Explorer II, and (either way) I assume they're all interfacing with your relativley new SE Explorer just fine??:|

All the coils that work with the Quattro will work with the Explorers and vice versa.

I used the 5" round and the 12.5 with my Quattro and with the Explorer II. I've used both with the SE and only got the 4.5 x 7 after I got the SE< so have only used it with the SE. But now that I have the 4.5 x 7, all I use with the SE is either that or the 12.5. Because in areas where the 12.5 is too much, the 4.5 is just right. And it gets better depth than the 5", so it's a no-brainer to me. Once you hunt with this thing it's a dream. Run the sensitivity up nearly all the way, light as a feather, pinpoints like a dream, and ROCK stable.

Mike, you caught me on that one. Your so right, I meant to say Excellerator coil. instead of Excallibur. (Where have I been all these days):wiggle::(I hope I'm right on the excellerator part. I may even be off on that name, but I think that's the one I have, but at this point, I wouldn't bet my paycheck on it. Thanks for correcting me. Marc.
