Where's all those great Sovereign finds??

Felix here is what I call my best Sov find to date. Found it in a drained lake in some black soupy mud with an XS model/8" coinsearch coil. Ive found lots of gold with sovs over the years including a bracelet with diamonds that weighs in at just under 2oz. mostly beach hunting, where I think the sov really shines.
But my gold coin find beats them all.

Wow Neil! How sweet a dig that was. Sure is purdy. Here I was going to brag of the 1867 cent piece I found today! It's all good. The thrill of the hunt. Thanks gear box for the tips. What do make of this: a strong iron null from all directions yet it seems like she's trying to lock onto something good. I seem to get good results from one or two like directions but loose it all together when coming from the opposite direction. Is this the iron playing head games or is there something good down there? This happens a lot and I have dug several times but since I only get part of the location info, pinpointing is impossible and I end up aborting mission before I crater out my plug. Thanks, John the dignfool.

I would consider it iron if you seem to get it one way and not another. If you get it from another direction and it moves I still figure it is iron. To be on the safe side I will get the signal in disc and bring it to the tip of the coil and start move around it a little bit at a time with the tip of the coil and see if it moves or loses it as it will be iron, but if you notice once you locked on to it and move around it a a bit and it don't change position and still sounds good I will dig it as it could be a coin next to iron. I sometimes will even try all metal pinpoint as I know where the target is and see if you can get a signal right there and not off one way or the other as it is a sure sign of getting the edge of iron. You will learn more as you go I am sure and sometime you just got to dig it to be sure, but I am sure after a while you will be able to tell the difference in iron and a coin next to iron. I have dug many of coins with nails in the same hole or touching a nail, just takes some experience.

Good Luck
Rick

John if your getting alot of these signals you might try as Rick pointed out, trying the pinpoint all metal mode. you can size a target this way and if the size is something you would consider could be a good target, dig away. Now in disc a large piece of iron will fool the sov where it either nulls, then gives a good report, or consistently tries to do so even from different angles. Ive seen axe heads, pieces of shovels and so on do this.
and of course it could be a nice coin with some smaller pieces of iron around it. digging is your only sure way to tell but for sure if its nulling, theres at least some iron down there if your disc is set at 0. the sov will null on any target below its set disc point and all smaller iron.

Alrighty then........I took off today from work and I'm headed down to the ol diggin hole. Wish me luck. I marked some of the questionable targets so with all your guys advice, gonna see what's down there. Thanks for your help!

So I just beat the nor'easter that came blowing in. Man was it chilly! But I headed straight to the mystery targets and BINGO! Thanks to your guys advise, I dug seven wheaties, one 1867 cent, two pewter buttons,a spoon, broken bell, and a cool rolled chunk of lead. All had iron close by.Now I gotta figure out how to post pictures so I can post the "catch of the day". I did dig some iron, but like you said if the tone and meter are trying to climb.....its worth investigating. Thank you again. I might just have to call in sick again tomorrow. I have no guilt when it comes to hard day of diggin!

Finally got a picture (hope it is visible) of the few decent things that I have found so far with my GT. The little black ring on the right of the picture does not show well at all. All items are marked .925 or are silver coins. Haven't found much other than lots of clad coins and zinc pennies. I have found a few wheaties. Best nickel is a 1937 buffalo. I have dug a lot of zinc pennies just to be sure that I am hearing what I think I am hearing. Got a lot to lean about what the GT is telling me but wonder why I waited until I was nearing 72 years old before I purchased my first detector. Sweeping the ground/sand is a great way to spend a few hours or a whole day.

Great findsm GeorgienSC. The more you use it, the more you will find. You'll be amazed at how good that detector is.Do you use a meter and an S-1 probe? HH-Mark

Here's some of my Australian beach finds found this year with my Sovereign GT.

Once I heard that Minelab were stopping production of them I quickly acquired a second machine.

I should be good now for many more years to come.

Meggie ...

Maxwedge. I have one of Ron's meters on my Gt. Would not leave home without it. My hearing is not very good. Too many years with headphones over my ears with International Morse Code and static blasting away and sleeping within a few feet of a running diesel engine. . High frequency hearing is gone and have lost some of the lower frequency hearing. I use the Garrett Pro Pointer when off the beach and a sand scoop on the beach. I put a 13" Ultimate coil on my GT to be able to cover more area on the beach and open areas and find that I seem to be digging much deeper holes to retrieve a lot of my finds. Still looking and listening for that first piece of gold jewelry but so far they have eluded me.

Very nice Meggie, youve got some good places to hunt it looks like:thumbup:

continued success.

That's dazzling Meggie. Would you mind telling us your technique? Like what coil and headphones you use and what settings and how far into the water you go and how you decide exactly where to detect and what exactly you attribute your success to? Thanks and hope you have continued good luck.

I came up to the Cold country (Wv) to deer hunt. Got a couple of deer and of course had to take a little time off to do some coil swinging. Went to where my Wife lived when she was young. I had worked the yard before but wanted to see what I had missed. First time there I had found a 1939 quarter and a few wheaties to go along with some clad coins. This time I found a 1911 dime and a few more wheaties to go along with some clad. Sure was nice to find that pretty lady. She was my first. I spent a number of hours last weekend at an old elementary school yard. School was built in the late 40's or very early 50's. Found a bit of clad and a couple of wheat pennies but not the first piece of silver. Planning on hitting it again in the spring when i come up to turkey hunt.
