Where's all those great Sovereign finds??

fwcrawford

Well-known member
I haven't posted here in a while due to not getting out with my Sovereign much lately, but I still enjoy looking at other's finds on this forum.
There's bound to be some nice finds being made out there!!

I ain't been able to hunt for about a week or so due to the rain and wind. It's supposed to be nice Saturday and Sunday so I expect to get out then. Itching too, in fact. I don't know about anybody else but I'm more prone to land hunt fall, winter, and spring. I'd much rather hunt on a cold day than in the blazing hot sun on land. I can dress for the cold. Can't do much about the heat, though, so I delegate to water hunting when it gets too hot. I've got some spots in the woods lined up to hunt once the brush and weeds die back. One spot in particular we worked early summer and made some great finds, but the poisen ivy and such was so thick that it greatly limited us to working the site.

I have found some areas that have not been detected in a number of years. I have picked up in excess of $80.00 in clad in the past two months. I have found clad from every year from 1964 to present but not a single piece of silver. It puzzles me as to why I am not finding any silver as the areas that I am working have been there for a lot longer than 1964. I have found some sterling jewelry but nothing really notable. My best find was a 1906 quarter that I found at an old boat landing. I found an ear ring that has me puzzled. It is very intricately made with some kind of clear stones. Its tones on the GT are lower than silver or Zinc pennies but not as low as a nickel. It registers a solid 176 on my meter. There are no markings on it that I can find.

Here in NM I'm just starting to gear up after our inferno summner!

I am waiting for some warm weather, the last traces of Sandy have kept it cold here. Going T or Ting with fiancee and her son tonight:gonna be cold. I have to find a $9,000 platimum ring that her EX tossed in the snow one winter, it's somewhere within 30 feet of her front door...we went from summer to winter it seems with little nice weather here. It's either super-hot or super-cold in Indiana except for the spring and fall.

GeorgeinSC: Frustrating isn't it. You'd think someone, somewhere, that you've searched, would've dropped something prior to 1964! I used to search this worked out park here in town that would give up nothin'(this was with an old White's) funny thing is Once I found an Indian head and then later a Barber dime: the dime was about an inch deep but sounded like junk! I think there must've been a nail right next to it. I am anxious to take the Sovereign there...when it's warm. I don't know that a Minelab has ever been there.

Been very busy here got to getup 3am to ship a horse to Texas.Need to take a break, but the weather has to cooperate.HH Ron

Felix,

I hate to say it, but I haven't been able to post much for finds anymore like I used too as I didn't use my GT at all this year., but do enjoy seeing others peoples finds. Seem like all there has been is coil comparisons and air test mainly posted and not much for finds like there used to be, just hope it will change and we see more finds from actual hunting which the Sovereign is great at.
The reason I haven't used my GT this year is trying to learn a few other detectors like the Deus and now the CTX 3030 which seems to be great, but still love my Sovereigns as I know it much better. Don't get out much either because of my health issues and finding time to detect more than a hour at a time, thought when I took over the bar and cafe in a small town 25 years ago I would have more time to detect, but as you get older you get wiser and slower and cant put in the hours like we used to.

Fwcrawford, call me crazy...

And this post is in no way directed towards you at all obviously, but do a search over the last two or three years by user names...And then compare the number of "hunted today" or "look what I found" types of threads by some who are always criticized for doing some "testing" posts, to a few people (nameless) who seem to complain the most about wanting to see more "finds" threads, and I bet you'll find some rather interesting numbers comparison wise.

In fact, over several years, and I very well may be wrong, but I can't remember not one "look what I found" or "my hunt today" types of threads from a few individuals who seem the most vocal and critical about wanting to see those the most, and yet they always seem to be complaining and trying to steer people in the direction they want to see. I say if you want to see more of certain kinds of threads, than by all means post them and have at it. I do my part, in both "testing", "today's hunt", and "look what I found" type of threads.

I happen to enjoy reading a diverse range of threads myself, including but not excluded to "finds" threads. I'm not one for certain styles and kinds of hunting, but far be it from me to tell others how I feel they should spend their time, and in no way do I feel it's my place to say otherwise. After all, if we all walked in locked step and agreed on interests/opinions, there wouldn't be any need for these forums, now would there? I enjoy testing, comparison, and various other informational threads as much as I do "finds" threads myself, but that's me, and I'm not going to complain on topics that don't interest me. Nobody is forcing me to click on a thread to read it, and I can scroll right by the posts I'm not interested in.

So if people want to see more "finds" or "today's hunt" threads, then by all means do some already and "get'er done" is the way I look at it...

Ran out of time to edit my message, but incidently...I've been on various forums across the net for years, and yet across the entire net I noticed a distinct lack of field hunt threads over the last several months, for any brand name of detector out there as a matter of fact. Why? Well, there is always a slow down during the hot/dry months, just like there are in the worst of cold/snow months of dead winter, but this summer was in particular hard on land detecting due to the severity of the whether. It's just now starting to pick up again I suspect. I know I'm just now gearing up for some serious land hunting, including both public venues and deep woods hunting. Not just due to the heat, ticks, and dry soil, but also due to the weeds and brush beginning to die back. Winter is the true relic hunter's season, for one thing.

I have found when another detector is used for a couple of hunts my Sovereign is much more appreciated.Rick knows his Sovereign's well and I always look forward to his posts.I hope you get out more next season.Good to see Critter out in the field more and good finds.Sometimes its good to see stats and comparrisons(entertaining) but for me my main purpose is to get out in the field and search for gold or silver. HH Ron

Life sometimes gets in the way.Last Saturday buried a horse on my farm. One of the best horses around(a legend) the owner one of my best friends.Kitsi walled Romeo out to the back pasture and the vet put him down.Don the vet stayed around and help me roll him in the grave.Would like to share a poem my wife Pam wrote from the heart. Thanks Ron

Hey Critterhunter,
I didn't mean to offend you or anyone else or start any trouble.. it's just that I love seeing other finds made with the Sovereign and look forward to seeing the various posts.
I haven't been out with my Sovereign much lately due to not having any ideal locations to use it as of now.
I did take it to an old park that produced some great results a couple of years ago, but the "occupiers movement" took up residence there last year and left a pile of trash
and now it is a nightmare trying to listen for those nice soft signals that I was getting early on before they came it.
I didn't find anything worth posting, but hopefully I can come up with something soon.
Felix

Greetings fellow sovereign folk!
This is my first posting. New to the whole Internet thing as a matter of fact. Just got a email address last week so I could post here. Truth be said, I'd rather be digging! Anyway finally I can get some answers.
I was just reading above post and again saw the reference to a ''soft tone" coming through. I know It's hard to describe the sovereign tones, but maybe you can help me hear it. Presently I have a sovereign xs2 and have dug some really cool finds. I am mainly looking for revolutionary war relics, but love the thrill of the hunt and can't wait to see what's making all the racket! All of my finds have been just that; obvious, locked on,"somethings there" tones. I run no notch,no disc,as much sensitivity as she can handle. Max volume and threshold just audible. Low and slow.
I hear the null on iron, but when she locks in on something, it's obvious. There are times when I get one way or non-conclusive, frustrating signals, but I can't say that I've heard this illusive soft signal. Is it barely audible? Is it long and steady? If I blink loudly will I miss it? I hope I've heard it all along and just have interpreted the sound differently. I do know that I have hit the same spots again and again from different angles and keep on finding stuff, but once again when she locks onto a target, it is a obvious tone, not what I would call soft by any means. If anyone can enlighten me, I would much appreciate it. Thank you

Welcome Dignfool. I used to wonder the same thing and I finally came to the conclusion that the soft tone to me is really a more mellowed tone that comes with age but is still plenty audible but just more "mellowed". The smaller target size with that same"mellowed" tone usually indicates a deeper target. The target size is smaller but still plenty audible. And you certainly can miss it if you are going to fast. By the looks of your finds on your list I'm pretty sure you already heard it, especially with the silver dimes and wheats.
Good luck Gary

Dignfool,Welcome to the forum,Any faint target that tries to climb to a higher tone or ID number has a good chance to be a good target. With the amount of pull tabs you recovered hows your ring count?Good Luck HH Ron

Gary and Ron , thank you for the welcome and your replies. I must say that I have had quite good luck so far. I tend to dig everything looking for relics . My biggest obstacle so far has been the area I hunt! It is a hill totally saturated with history. It is known as Iron Hill. As long as men have been in this area, this hill has been their hang out. Indians mined jasper rock here and fought the Europeans when they discovered iron ore. It was occupied by the British and the Patriots. A Revolutionary war battle took place in the vicinity and being the highest point for miles around, it was the GPS of its time. So as you can imagine, you spend as much time digging as you do swinging. The major obstacles I encounter here are the volume of metal underground (both a curse and a blessing) and the fact that years of iron ore mining have left the area littered with every imaginable size chunk of slag which likes to play head games with my beloved sovereign. I don't want to sound greedy but with all this going on underground, I still feel as though I might be missing something. I have not found any rings or jewelry. Is this because most of the action seen here was from "Manly men" who wore little, if any jewelry, or am I missing the illusive "soft" tones mentioned by Gary? Also when the tone and meter attempt to climb yet you suspect a honking piece of iron down under, is there a good method for determining if it is friend or foe? Sometimes I hear a double beep, or nulling with no tone by changing directions. In other words how would I hear a coin or ring next to iron? Would it come through faint, broken? I hope I haven't confused you as much as I've confused myself here......oh boy. Thank you!

Hey Dignfool if the tone and meter is trying to climb regardless if there is a big honkin piece of iron nearby then by all means dig it. It may never reach the optimum number but the key is that it is "trying" to climb with both the number and tone even if there is a null or grunt of iron nearby. But first try to isolate that one small spot where the tone and numbers are trying to climb by using the "minelab wiggle". Circle your target until you find that one small spot and wiggle over it until you are satisfied you've got the best target response. You can get the tone and the meter to climb on some smaller pieces of iron but generually these will be broken up or abrubt target responses when you bring your coil over the iron. I get fooled now and again on small nails, steel wire, tacks and round quarter size pieces of rusty thin iron. One more thing, listen very carefully to all the target responses, even the iron ones for a hint of a higher tone mixed in indicating something good mixed in with the iron. I've dug some nice older coin's with rusty nails laying right in the hole with them.
Gary
