Where to make first MD purchase.

Very hard to find a used MXT at a good price.I know a Whites dealer who can use any unit he wants at any price, his next personal detector the M6 a scaled down version of the MXT with great performance easier to use.

if it is whites that you want, then i would go for the m6 it is a little smoother and quiter. plus the M6 has allot of good reviews. and is easy to use as far as controls are concerned. ok i'm gonna be very honest here, since this is not a specific brand forum. dont put to much in what you read from manufactures and listen to more of the advice people give. because most have used those units and really know how they work, and not a bias report done by the manufacture. not saying they are lying but they do have to sell those detectors to recover cost. the M6, would be good, the cibola would be good , dont be fooled by its toyish looks it can get it done. the Ace 250 would be good, the F2 would be good. the mxt is a good machine but it is also very sensitive and a little noisy, not bad for the experienced but maybe confusing to the new person just starting out. the whites is probably the heavest of all of them, than once you have used them for about a year at least then you can have a good ideal on what will fit you, you will find that you will want several detectors for different hunting applications, so the unit you buy now can be your grab and go detector later. i have two such detectors that i use when i dont have much time and want easy and lite. hope this helps.

For those interested , I was given a link and think it was Amazon.com . On Friday they have a special web sale that will only work on Friday. I was told that one can buy MD's really cheap there. I was looking last night and the had some BH's at really really low prices. I havent my self bought one yet but going to next week .

Lee, if you do not have a local metal detector dealer it would be good to purchase from one of the Findmall sponsors.
They are inspired to promote metal detecting all around!

Where and what are two different deals..... What to purchase boils down to what you will like, what you wanna find, and your money. DFX is NOT the way to go for a newbie. Sorry.... Buy something cheap enough to
experiment, get out in the field, and say "you know I would like this on my detector".

Then you will have a good back up detector and you will also have enough experience to understand what the other detectors will do. IF you don't like a new high end detector then your detectoring days will likely be over.

I've seen it time and time again.... The ace250 I gotta tell ya has excellent feedback and don't let the price fool ya.

After that check out the mxt. I've owned the best and the worst. But the mxt is just a gem for all around hunting and value.

Where to buy: look for a sponsor that sells your line on this forum. All of them are great!

Pappy, gotta disagree with you about what to start with. The ACE250 is going to make a newbie dependent on TID and will miss too many good targets if they're relying on just what the readout says. Also, the pinpoint really takes some getting used to on that machine.I think something like the Tesoro Silver uMax or Cibola would be a better choice for first machine as it will teach more and be easier to learn at first. I started with a Tesoro and still have a couple as backup to my MXT. The Cibola is still my favorite coinshooting, quick hunt machine.

I would agree with Canewrap.

The Little Yeller Feller is indeed a dandy liteweight machine, and fun to use for quickie coinshooting...
However, the information provided by the tones is such that it is the only machine I've used that I WOULD NOT
advise buying hi - dollar headphones for.

I agree with Pappy a lot of new hunters do very well with the 250 Ace.I have used the Silver and Cibola and would give the nod to the Ace for a new hunter.I think a Fisher 1236x would be a nice unit for a beginner that they wouldn't grow out of in a season.

I buy from a local dealer. Close and convenient for me.
I have seen newbies buy from him and he spends time with the buyer teaching and actually taking them out on hunts.
He supports his customers and treats them more like being a teacher and friend than a seller.
He likes to take first timers to teach, go out and use demo machines, work with them, work some more, and however many times it takes, let the customer decide if they want to take up the hobby or not. And if they do, the support continues.
He goes out of his way to make things right - earned my repeated business.
Others may be so and so - I feel fortunate having the convenience and support.
Just my .02

why not consider a f2 fisher!..lot of good feedback on it!..seems to be "nasty" in trashy conditions!..has 4 tones, and is very light!..really just a simple detector, and easily learned!..a delight to use!

Just forgot to add in addition to a local dealer, if there are any detecting clubs in your area, it might be an option as members are friendly, and all have something in common

My point is this: if the newbie buys a detector (high end, low end, with meter, without meter) and does not like it, they WILL in all likelyhood give up detecting. Why not make it fun? They can learn tones later as they grow into the hobby. So why not give him both options?

NOW how many seasoned veteran detectorist have a meter and rely on it? I would venture to say a LARGE majority, unless you have taken the time to LISTEN to your machine and what those tones actually tell you.

Also, when he upgrades the ace250 would make a excellent back up detector . And from what I've read, its an excellent detector period.

I guess its kinda like Ford or Chevy. Whats your preference? Non meter or meter. But I think for someone just starting out, a meter is a lot more help than a hinderance.

Well I guess we will have to agree to disagree.

later..

You may be right PappyInSC.

I just went through the process last year. I bought a

quote "good" mid range detector with a TID. I was frustrated.

I got a quote " more better " TID machine. More power and

less stability. Then I was really frustrated. Raised heIl with

the dealer. He new what to do. He sent me a Cibola and said

" if you don't like that, then I will make it right".

He must have known that once I got my hands on a smooth

running powerful and expressive metal detector, that I would

quit griping. It worked. I could not have been more satisfied.

I chunked the TID's and have 4 Tesoros now.

I don't have "detector envy" any more. Too busy bragging

and finding gold and gem stones.

It may be that most people have to find what works for them

by trial and error.

If that's true, then start out cheep. You can do that with

quality if you get a $152 Compadre. That's my favorite.

Don't knock it til you give an honest chance. It can't be beat.

I would use it as a back-up, but I can't stop using it long enough.
