Where to make first MD purchase.

Bryan Jon

New member
Hello all
I am looking to make my first md purchase this week. I am wondering where to do so. Any feedback is appreciated.

kellycodetectors.com best prices and tons of free stuff get the phone number and they might be able to give you special discounts and to see what detector to buy they have a chat feature where you can speak to sales pros.

Thanks.I have spoken with them and another dealer. Both have been very helpful. I am looking at the DFX or GTI2500.

Why not look on the Whites and Garrett's web sites for any dealers in your area. You might be able to swing both brands at the same place!

There really is not any White's dealer in my area, hence the online search. I am really leaning on the White's.

Tell me why your leaning toward Whites? Also tell me what is important to you as a hunter? Where and what are you hunting?

If I was buying my first metal detector a visit to the dealer for a hands on and actually use the unit in the show room. All the specs and photos will fall short of what you really need to know. The sound the feel of the unit, ergonomics is everything especially for the upper end detectors. Most new user's do better with a mid priced unit.Try a M6 along with a DFX at a White's dealer. The Garrett 1500 may work better for a new user than the 2500 series.

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING ANY BRANDS TOP DETECTOR,PLEASE TRY BEFORE YOU BUY,ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE NEW TO DETECTING. TOO MUCH MACHINE TO START WITH MIGHT JUST PUT YOU OFF METAL DETECTING ALTOGETHER.

I like what I have read about the White's. I also read the reviews and features and liked what what said. I also have spoken to a few dealers about different models and I felt the DFX was one I could grow into. Trying before I buy is not an option as there is not a Whites dealer near by that I could go to.I am looking for a good all around machine. How can I say what is important to me as a hunter if I have never done so.

Some of the things that might be important to you. Target ID, Tone ID, Coin hunting, jewelry hunting, beach hunting, gold prospecting, weight of machine, price range, resale value, batteries used, accessory coils available, customer support, warranty, longevity, true all metal mode, notch discrimination, pinpoint feature, auto ground balance, manual GB, GB tracking, threshold, water proof, relic hunting. You really need to pick a few out of here for us to come up with a good fit for you.
I would like to recommend the Garrett Ace 250.

Bryan, for the majority of hunter's who know been there and done that will tell you these two units the DFX and Garrett 2500 are not the way to go for a beginner.I'm an experience hunter and have owned a couple of units. If you have to get an upper end unit a CZ3D would probably be a better choice. But then again if your new you'll have to find out the hard way. Good Luck

Bryan,

I went through

this process last year.

Do not!! spend a lot of money.

If you want a display, get a Ace 250 or a M-6.

My personal choice is the non-display Compadre or Silver Sabre.

In my openion. Of these four choices, the Compadre is superior in performance.

Cost of Compadre is $152. Killer B's $76. I wish I had known that before I spent all that money:shrug:

Posters in the forum has been watching my post for the last six months. I started finding jewelry four and one half months

ago. This most of my jewelry finds for four and one half months. If jewelry lights your fire and price is no object. Well,,, never mind.

The main thing is just get out there and have fun.:detecting:

HH,

Tabdog,
Nice seeing all your finds! Great JOB!!!! If I hit the Lotto tomorrow I would not buy a $1000 plus detector for land coin hunting. You made the right choice.

that would be my advise also, don't start with the top of the line detectors. start with the cheaper to lower mid first. you will find as the most part the more expensive just have a little more features and allot longer learning curve which can frustrate you. it may look simple but there is allot of theory to metal detecting, looks can be deceiving. than try to find a club. oh yeah the detectors you have mentioned are heavy, i know 5 to 6 pounds doesnt sound heavy but believe me, it will get to you in a short time. good luck

How is the Whites MXT?
that would be my advise also, don't start with the top of the line detectors. start with the cheaper to lower mid first. you will find as the most part the more expensive just have a little more features and allot longer learning curve which can frustrate you. it may look simple but there is allot of theory to metal detecting, looks can be deceiving. than try to find a club. oh yeah the detectors you have mentioned are heavy, i know 5 to 6 pounds doesnt sound heavy but believe me, it will get to you in a short time. good luck
These may only make it that you will not like the hobby. Even a well experienced hunter will have a problem until they get to understand them well. If a person wants a Whites I feel the MXT may be one a beginner can grow into and easy to use and understand. If you want a Garrett the Ace 250 I feel is the best value and easy to use too. The New Fisher F-2 has been getting some very good review too plus they will be coming out with 2 new detectors that sound like will be hot too, The F5 and the F-70. In my group of detectors I have the Fisher F-75, the F-4 which is the best competition detector I have ever used and just got in 2 of the F-2 I haven't used yet, but look like one great deal for the money as it has 2 coils with it. I also have my Whites MXT which my wife uses and finds it is the best detector she has used plus my favorite the Sovereign GT which as anyone that has experience with one will tell you is probably the best there is and i also have my Explorer SE which has a bit of a learning curve, but just look at the forums and you can see some of the great finds found with the Explorers the others have missed.
Most that are new to detecting and not sure they will like it I will sell them a Ace 250 as they can use it and if they don't like it they can get most of their money back, or if they like the hobby they can trade it in and upgrade to a detector which is a bit better with a learning curve.
At this time I feel the F-2 and the Ace 250 are the best for those starting out detecting as they will find more with less time trying to figure out if you have the right settings and what they have missed as it had the wrong settings.

Whites MXT's a good unit but also a bit heavy. To start you off
right and at lower cost, I'd suggest the Tesoro Cibola at dealer
discount of $340. A fine detector at only 2.5 lbs. Please, please
don't ignore Tesoro because they may look too "simple", they
are absolutely fabulous detectors that really get the job done!
I speak from experience, of course. Also get good headphones
when you start with whatever detector you get. I suggest
"Killer Bee's", my favorite!
Happy Hunting!

P.S. An online dealer on this forum is an excellent source
for your needs or wants!
