Where did all the metal detectors go.

Maybe it's because people are waking up to the fact that none of the newer high spec wonder machines do any better than anything else in reality.đź‘Ť
Oh no you didn't! I've been telling myself that same thing for years now. But I still get that itch every time a new release comes out or one of the buy and try guys on the forums posts a machine after they realize the same thing.

Used high dollar detectors that are 10-15 years old have taken a hit as far as value goes, in reality they are only worth 1/2 of most asking prices. I would not sell any of my X-Terras for under $200, I would keep them. A good example is all of the Deep Tech line, pay over $400 for a Vista X and sell it for $250. Minelab set the standard for a excellent machine in the X-Terra Pro at $269.
That might be true for some, but Fishers, Whites and Garretts seem to hold a decent resale value like F75's, CZ5's, 3d's AT pro's, MXT's., Tesoro's. To me, it's the newer machines that are taking a beating.

Maybe everyone finally found what they wanted!!🤭
I used to tell myself and my wife that same thing until that new shiny detector caught my eye. All it would take is a buy and try guy post how wonderful that machine was and it could detect a dime at 12 plus inches in a field full of nails, horse shoes, being embedded in concrete with 6" of water on top of all that and salt water to boot. I was all in. So I'm skeptical of that suggestion.:cautious:

One thing i think slowed all sales is postage. It is hard to add $30.00 0r $40.00 to the price of a detector used. Before you could ship for $18.00 or 20.00 . Now it is to high and takes two or three weeks to get one.
Once again you need to check out pirateship.com I did a write up awhile back. It saves you a ton of $$.. All done in the comfort of your own home and no standing in line.

I tend to agree with you to a point…
When I first started detecting, I bought three current at the time models.
I later learned that the technology was changing rather fast and lots of new models came out.
I then realized that what is new now is old in a rather short time… it was then that I realized this could get expensive trying to keep up with the latest model.
I did buy and sell several used detectors over time and finally settled on my current model that I have been using since 2019 and although I did buy an XTerra Pro a couple years ago to use in the water, I am sticking with the one I bought in 2019 and not looking to replace it.

To be honest i did buy an xterra pro myself........but because it is lighter than my main detector and fully waterproof.I beach hunt now ,(although i have'nt been for a while) and the water resistence of the pro was a plus for when the weather is bad.My other detector is a sovereign GT and it will still find the stuff just as good as any of the latest machines.

This has to be the first time in history that people seem to be happy with what they are swinging. I see the classifieds are the most quiet I can recall seeing them. I'm guessing most folk are finally happy with what they are using, or is there something else afoot. Could it be the $600.00 transactions limit? The economy stupid? It couldn't be the price of the detectors, back in the day most good detectors were $700.00 to well over $1000.00, but now detectors can be had for under $500.00 and even cheaper on the used market. Or could it be most all of the try buy, try and sell guys have died off or smartened up like I did and realized and came to realized all metal detectors go beat when passed over metal. Now some can argue depth, target separation, masking, but unless your a professional hunter all that stuff might stoke your ego, but in reality, most of us are tot lot hunters with the occasional beach hunt thrown in the mix.

I'm just curious where all the detectors have gone. Or could it be I'm mistaken and all this is just a bunch of rambling from an old man and who is a reformed buy and try guy and metal detector hoarder. ;)
Since Im a beach hunter for the last 25 years, Ive only used Minelabs Sovereigns & Excaliburs. Probably went through a dozen Sovereign because they werent water-proof and hip mounted.

I knew you had the XTerra Pro and were impressed with it.
I too had a Sovereign GT and liked it and made great finds with it, but do not think it handled my soil well in some areas.
In 2019 I bought the 800 and have really been impressed with the results I have gotten with it.
I later sold the Sovereign.
I mostly detect inland and if not for the leaking issues they had with the 800, I would not have bought the XTerra Pro which I also like.
To be honest I was hesitant to get the 800,
But I was seeing the finds another forum member was making with his 800 in places he had used the Sovereign…
He finally convinced me to try one and I was not disappointed.
I know some folks hate the 600/800, but I love mine.

I liked the Sovereign for beach hunting also, but only go to the beach about once a year.., mostly inland user, but was afraid of salt environment getting into the electronics over time.

Continue.....Then the Equinox came a long just in time as my last Sovereign Gt bit the dust. The Nox was plagued with all sorts of problems and only lasted 3 years when it died.
Crack in the handle. Luckily Deus 2 came along and solved all the chattering issues with multi-frequency. For the last few years I only had 2 machines in my car, Deus 1 & 2,
land & Sea !!!! Before, I carried 4 machines, always needed a back up unit.

Since most beach detectorist will attest to the fact, that finding gold has fallen off a cliff. I went from finding 35-75 gold rings a year down to just 5 this last year there's no reason to drop 1k on a new back up unit when you can barely pay for the primary one. All previous machines were paid off in no time. Now not so much. Id like to have a back Deus 2 as I sometimes forget to charge the batteries. However, unless I can get a really good deal on it, Ill make do with what I have.

PS.. 2 of my best hunting pals have given up detecting because there hardly any gold to find. Unless you are able to get to some old beaches that havent been hammered. Chances are you'll do well with the newer machines. I remember the days after a storm there would be up to 20 guys hunting a beach. Nowadays u are lucky to see a few.

Long story short, the good machines today do an excellent job and no need to keep trying new ones. Sorry I dont want to dig 4-5 feet for a coin !!! :) :) :)

PPS Here's the latest POC.. Looks great, gold ion plating inside ring... Nothing even written on the inside to say its stainless or anything else !! MIC crap !!! Wont even pay for a battery !!!

Good write up… even though not gold, it is still better than a bottle cap in my book…
Not only has gold dropped off like you stated, clad has really declined even since I started detecting in 2006.

Never really had a problem with soil over here in the uk with any machine, any soil that has been difficult has been the dame for all machines......i think you guys have more problems in your neck of the woods. As i said,i hunt the beaches almost exclusively now but the Gt has found me some cracking inland finds too, even on difficult ancient sites.
Ive never had the pleasure of trying a 600/800 but i doubt i will get another detector now until mine bite the dust......i'd still put the GT up against anything else over here in the uk on the beach or inland........ive been on lots of rallies and have never come away from any wanting the latest gear others were using.

Yes, i neglected to mention the clad... gas money. I use to do over $1,000 a years. I live at the Jersey shore.
Place is packed all summer. If Im lucky, maybe a few hundred this year. Between the use of plastic and phones, and the fact the whole Jersey Shore was replenished
after hurricane Sandy, its tough to invest in new equipment. In the past, between gold, silver and coins, my equipment hasn't cost me a penny except for time.

When I first started detecting,25 years ago, I found my 1st gold ring by week 3. It was a huge signet ring with no initials. I still didnt know what I was doing at that time.
I was just 'thumbing' the discrimination knob to find nickels !!! Troy Shadow X2 paid in full !!!!

Those Troy's were some great detectors.

I have been detecting for close to 20 years now and have owned less than 10 detectors during that time. I currently own 6 detectors and found what I wanted to swing early on. I use mainly analog detectors. In the small amount of time I have to detect due to being busy with other things I have found the simple yet powerful analog detectors work perfectly for me. I have not been bitten by the need to have the newest and greatest models of detectors every company is touting right now. I am happy with what I have and just enjoying the hobby. I have bought all my detectors used except for two. The only 2 I bought brand new were my Compadre with the 5.75” coil about 17 years ago and my Nokta first swing last year. I am content to enjoy the best hobby ever and will stick to buying used detectors as I see them pop up. I hope everyone enjoys the hobby and finds a detector or detectors that work the best for them. Good luck and HH.

And yet Dirt, you own more detectors than you have arms to swing. So go ahead and admit to yourself that even if your not one of these buy and try guys, you are a detector hoarder and bask in the reality along with the rest of us. It's OK, you don't have feel ashamed, we aren't judging you we are the support group.;)

I swing a Sovereign Elite and can totally relate. Seems on just about every beach hunt I've had at least 1 or more targets that had me digging 1/2 way to China, like those rare & elusive soda cans and kids fruity drink pouches, lol. And let's not forget those coins that tend to be about 15" - 18" deep. That said, I just returned from a few years hiatus and just picked up an X-Terra Elite. I didn't buy it to replace my Sovereign, but to augment for beach hunting and for coinshooting on land. I think Sovereign owners will understand, but I really don't know or care if the X-Terra Elite will detect "deeper" than my Sovereign. If it does. that's fine. But if it just equals the depth of my Sovereign, I'll be happy. I know that many guys/gals, especially if they're coming from an SF detector, will be looking for more depth. But IMO, I don't think Sovereign owners buy a new detector with high expectations of getting more depth. I think we tend to buy a new detector, at least in my case, because it may have features or other creature comforts that we don't have on the Sovereign, like VDI screen, waterproof, wireless headphones, lightweight, etc.

Personally, I bought the X-Terra Elite because it is a "self-contained" detector; lightweight, waterproof, Multi-IQ (since I'm coming from BBS/SMF), wireless headphones, has a screen with VDI, and is basically a grab & go type detector. I'm swinging my Sovereign Elite in my profile pic, detector in the Minelab pouch mounted to the top of my chest. It takes a lot more time to get set up and ready to hunt than the X-Terra Elite. With the X-Terra Elite, I can grab the detector, start swinging, and not be tethered to the detector due to having wireless headphones. So, for quick hunts, or a few hours day trip, or detecting in the rain or bad weather, I'll probably grab the X-Terra Elite, but I'll still use my Sovereign for longer beach hunts and/or hunting in good weather, with the X-Terra along as a backup, or vice versa. I love bad weather, so I'll hunt beaches in the rain and one time, I was out on the beach just after a hurricane passed by off the coast. That was surreal, I was the only person on the beach, and the entire area looked like a ghost town, lol. Also love hunting the wet and into the water a bit, so the X-Terra would be my choice for hunting in rain, hurricanes (after they pass by of course, lol), in water or hunting the wet, since it's waterproof.

I also think the X-Terra Elite might be a better choice for land hunts, nothing to do with depth, I'm just thinking it would be a better detector to use when coin shooting old houses, parks, etc., especially on permissions where I really want to get the best info possible on a target before deciding to dig. The last thing I want is to be digging so many holes on a permission, that the landowner thinks his property looks like a mine field, lol. Of course, on the beach, the sand is very forgiving, so I dig everything, only takes a minute or so to dig a target to find out what it is. Then, once the tide comes in, there's no trace that I was ever there.

Man, I can relate to “Buy & Try” lol, but not with detectors. When it comes to detectors, I’m more of a “Buy & Use” kinda guy. Over the last 57 years I think I’ve owned about 9 detectors. I’m probably forgetting 1 or 2 but here’s what I remember: Heathkit, Whites Coinmaster IV, Fisher 1220X, Garrett AT Pro & Ace 350, Minelab Sovereign XS-2, Sovereign XS-2a-Pro, Sovereign Elite, and most recently a X-Terra Elite. For the last 10+ years, I’ve been swinging my Sovereign Elite because it’s just a beast on the beach, and along with the Excalibur, they ruled the sand for a long time. Yeah, I know, there’s also PI’s, but those are totally different animals, and I don’t think I’d have the patience to learn to swing one of those.

That said, in the Guitar world, I was definitely a “Buy & Try” guy and had a serious “addiction” that lasted about 4 or 5 years. I bought so many guitars, amps, effects pedals, parts, you name it, that there’s no way I’ll ever be able to remember everything that I’ve owned. Every weekend I’d be hitting the music stores, pawn shops, etc., looking for the magic gear that would give me the majestic tone that all guitar players chase. Buy & Try is such a well-known “addiction” in the guitar world that there’s actually a name for it. We call it G.A.S., otherwise known as “Gear Acquisition Syndrome”, lol.

I probably spent a small fortune on guitar gear over the years, but thankfully, that Buy & Try illness never seemed to hit me with detectors, lol. For some reason, I’ve always seemed to buy, use, and hold on to detectors for years before deciding to part with them for another model. But I still have that Coinmaster IV, never felt the need to part with it, probably because my mom bought it for me when I was a kid. And ironically, today is the 17-year anniversary of my mom's passing, so I'll never part with the Coinmaster IV, just for sentimental reasons.
