Where Are You Located & What Do You Do For A Living?

Thought it would be fun to hear where you guys live and what you do for a living. This would also be a good time to get a few of you lurkers who never post to at least come out and tell us a little about yourself.

I live about 10 to 20 miles south of Cleveland, right near Hopkins airport if you know where that is. I like this area (suburbs). Wouldn't want to live in the city, and if I head south 10 miles or so I'm already getting into the country with farm fields and such. Best of both worlds. Funny thing is I've lived here all my life but I'd say I've only been to down town Cleveland maybe 10 or so times in my life. Nothing there for me. Plenty of suburb cities around to do shopping in and not have to deal with the Cleveland traffic.

I'm blessed with a large Metropark system that goes on for miles and has history to it. Found a lot of good coins in the woods along the river down there and in the picnic groves. This park system runs for MANY miles as it follows the river and is in a valley, and has many picnic groves and such along it's roadway. There used to be gritmills on the river in places back in the 1800's so it has it's history. We have several nearby towns who's history goes back to the early 1800's and some towns I'm sure date back to the 1700's. None of these are very far away, either. Like 10 to 20 miles to get to many of them.

What do I do for a living? Nothing at the moment. I used to own my own window cleaning business for about 15 years. I got burned out at that and went to a heating and air conditioning school. Graduated top of my class in 2008. Haven't looked hard for a job in it that whole time. Been waiting for the economy to get better so I'd have better odds. They say there is a great demand for HVAC techs but most of the help wanted ads I see want 5 years of experience or more. Nobody seems to want to give you that experience.

Had to file for bankruptcy this past year. Now I've been looking hard again for a job in this field as they tend to higher new guys in the spring to do clean and checks and such. When I apply to these jobs my resume says I've been self employed all this time waiting for the economy to get better before switching careers, so it doesn't look so bad.

I'm thinking of going to another HVAC school in my area that is twice as long (14 months) as my school was and has job placement. My school didn't have any job placement. This place has companies that hire directly from them. Supposed to have 73% job placement this past year right out of school, which is pretty good in this bad economy. Found out I can get a government backed student loan and a pell grant even though I had the bankruptcy as it's based on need and not credit history. Hoping that's true and I can borrow enough to go to school there with enough to pay for gas and such while attending. I'll find out in a few weeks about that.

I hope you guys haven't had it as hard as me in this bad economy. They say we always come out of a depression but what scares me the most is those were the days when there were good jobs to go to that you could raise a family on. The manufacturing base in this country is just about gone so how are people with no college degrees going to make enough money to live on. Having spending money is what makes the economy move on, and I just don't see those jobs out there for people these days who get back in the work force. They are working for $8 an hour at a retail store or worse. Heck, even these kids with college degrees aren't finding jobs. A lot of those jobs were at companies when they made things in this country.

Enough rambling. How's this economy been treating you? What do you do for a living and how did you fall into that profession? Always interests me to hear these kinds of stories.

On a political note, if we get a new prez, the economy will recover immediately...... You live in one of the toughest areas of the country, union gimme but i dont want to work areas.... Sorry, rant over...

Nice to hear from you guys.

Problem with trying to get a job in HVAC around here is that they all want experience, and there are plenty of experienced HVAC guys looking for work due to the economy. I figure if I can swing the financing to go to that other HVAC school I'll have an additional certification to the ones I already got from the first school, and as said they have pretty good job placement at this one where as mine didn't have any. My school was only 6 months while this one is 14 months, so I should get a better more in depth education there. My school was decent but you mainly just learned the basics and fundamentals. Not enough to work on your own and would need an entry level or helper position to gain experience. Even if I don't go to this school I'm thinking of offering to work for free as a helper or entry level at a shop to gain experience needed. I'm that desperate to get my foot in the door in this field.

NYC worked for Steinway & Son (piano factory ) for 11 years ..got layed off 2 months before my first child was Born now i'm home with 2 kids (2.5 years old and 7 moths) lucky me my wife makes good money . beach and water hunting on the weekend

One thing I have notice is that schools don't always guaranty a job in the field you train in as I have found out also. At the age of 37 I went back to school in 1984 for electronic servicing Tech which is a 2 year course with the idea of getting a better job instead of working for a tire shop since 1969. The school sent me some info on places looking for someone, but most were for those with experience, the others were for jobs out of the USA. I too found out that when checking with different companies they too want those with experience which is hard to do if no one will hire you. Other older than average class mates younger than me that were very smart with a 4 point average also couldn't find a job either and settled for other jobs. My son and grandson also when graduating from high school went on to a Field in electronics with both a 3 year course and they too ran into the same thing as everyone wants experience which many cant get because no one will give them a chance.
I started my own TV and VCR repair shop and took over my folks business in a very small town where we now own the bar and cafe. The repair shop closed back in 1996 as TVs and VCR were much cheaper to buy new than repair some of them so I do it now as a hobby. My son wound up being a fabricator after trying to find a job in electronic for over 10 years and has got my grandson into where my son works, so they are doing OK, but had to change fields for what they were trained in.
It is a tough world out there right now too which don't help, so you may have to work in another field or one related to what you went to school in and hope someone will give you a chance to prove what you are capable of.

I been detecting since 1973, my wife since 1974 and will be celebrating our 40Th this fall. We own the Cafe and bar in Chaffee, ND which is 35 miles southwest of Fargo (we do not talk like they do in the movie Fargo) where my wife runs the cafe and I do the bar, so to make my job sound better i say I am a social chemist for the last 25 years.

I hope it all works out OK for you Critterhunter and wish you all the luck in the world that someone will give you a chance to get the experience you need.

Well, I got some bad news today. Visited the school again and went more in depth with the financial aid department. With the pell grant and the government backed student loan it would still not be enough to pay for the school, let alone have enough extra spending money to pay for gas and such while I went there. I'm rather shocked by this. Why won't they give you enough money in a government loan to pay for the school, let alone enough extra to pay for food and gas and such while you attended. So much for the government giving you a hand up.

While I was at the school I talked to the head HVAC guy who taught that and he said they have a number of companies who will hire fresh HVAC graduates. He wouldn't name those companies but I noticed on the wall pictures of students with the names of the companies they went to work for in HVAC. Made a mental note of about 4 of them and plan to apply this week.

The problem with HVAC is that it's hard to get a job with no experience because 90% of what you need to know won't be learned in school and is learned on the job. A normal HVAC repair job is a one man job, so they are wasting money when they send you along with the guy to learn on the job. I can't really blame them for that. That's why I'm thinking of calling companies and offering to work for free for them until I learn enough to be worth while to pay something to.

I could use any ideas on how to break into this industry. I'm planning on telling them that yes I did graduate in 2008 but the economy was so bad that I stayed self employeed for the last 3 & 1/2 years, not wanting to switch careers with such a bad economy. That's not particularly true as I shut my business down when I went to the HVAC school but as far as I know they can't prove I haven't been self employed for the last few years with any kind of background check. Background checks just show your criminal record and there is now real way to see what companies you actually worked for as far as I know.

I have to get this career going soon. I'm 44 years old. I go back and fourth on that. On one hand I'm older than some fresh new buck out of school, but on the other hand I'm more responsible and won't be drinking in the company van or calling off from work due to a hangover. I just know that I need to get my foot in the door sooner than later.

It really sucks being my age and having nothing to show for my life. No house. No savings. No wife. No kids. On the other hand there are plenty of people my age and older who have had to switch careers in this day and age.

I live in worcestershire in England and run a warehouse for a company that supply parts for trucks. The economy is pretty bad over here at the moment but this is actually helping us.The reason for this is that transport companies can no longer afford to purchase new vehicles so they are having to keep repairing their existing vehicles....and we keep supplying them parts.....we are having the best times we've ever had. However,my wife and i are just about to sell our house and move to the coast so i am going to lose my job.....luckily my wife can work from home and she earns enough for us both to live on while i look for another job.One plus point is that i have got one of the best beach metal detectors ever made so i will be able to make a bit of extra money by searching the beaches.
Hope you have some better luck soon CH.

Critterhunter, I am in PA. and i am a HVAC mechanic and have about 37 years experience and various papers etc. I am assuming you have a universal certificate for refrigerants which you need. Next time somebody asks you about your experience ask them where they got theirs and that will make them think .I would be looking at school districts ,hospitals and colleges for employment if I were you if they do not have openings for HVAC mechanics they might have openings for maintenance repairmen. These places will offer steady employment and some of them especially the colleges will offer tuition reimbursement programs and some of the colleges will sometimes allow you to attend there for free if you are an employee. Reading your posts indicate that you are a smart man and i think you will do fine in the field of HVAC but you also have to understand that some of these machines can cost several hundred thousand dollars and you will need some serious experience before you get to work on machines like that and I AM NOT trying to be disrespectful, but in the meantime get your foot in the door and learn and read everything and anything you can get your hands on.Good Luck to you in your journey. Ezra.

Exra, thanks for the advice. Yes, I have my universal EPA license refrigerant license. I also have my AHRI (ICE) residential/commercial hvac certification, a 5th class low pressure boiler license, and of course my school diploma.

The school did a good job with fundamentals and basics but didn't teach you enough to be doing everything on your own without learning on the job. Like I said, I'm even thinking of calling companies out of the phone book and offering to work for free until I gain enough experience to be of more use to them. Had I had it to do all over again I would have went to this other school because of the job placement. My school didn't do anything for you in that respect. I'm just sort of bummed right now that I won't be able to go to this other school. I had hopes that the government backed student loan would be enough to pay for the schooling. Don't see how these kids going to college pay for it because the dollar amount is the same that you can get from them regardless of where you are going to school or what you are going for.
