I wouldn't say "I have a weird question for you"
I wouldn't offer to share or give the finds or even lead them to believe that you are looking for anything of value

I would express how I love the hobby and the search.
I would show them any research of the area I've done and to let them know that the house or land is of historical importance and that I'm not a door-to-door kind of guy

Also Dressing better then the hunting clothes will sell itself, the cards are a helpful idea also
self confidence and depending on the person I try to make it as I'm potentially someone that they could be friends with by showing that I'm not doing this for profit but for the love of sport and thrill of the hunt and preservation of the finds, not just some guy looting their yard or property.

Bad for everyone it seemed.
 
They're filming the second season right now. Bob has a detector shop in my hometown and he ain't there and won't be back til the new year. And yes the show does suck.
