Whats the nicest coin you've scratched?

I know we have all done it, got careless or in a hurry and gouged a nice silver coin with your knife. Lets see some of those massacres

What---you're wanting close to the heart confessions????-----Morgan dollar for me---no pictures--it makes me bawl every time I look at it!

I'm sure I've scratched a few choice coins. But one that came to mind when I read your question, was not mine, but was of a Buddy I was hunting with: He got a rare CC $5 gold, and ...... yup, scratched it. We think he knocked $1k or more off of it. For that reason, he never got it professionally appraised or graded. Because in his words, he "didn't want to know", because it would just make him sick if he knew the before and after. Doh!

Scratched the first IH penny I ever found - nice clean (otherwise) 1906.

1st piece of spanish silver ( 1 reale ). I was hunting in the middle of winter, ground was rather frozen . the only way I could find it and get it out of the frozen plug was to chop it in half with my shovel until it became visible. Fortunately the scratch I made is rather small.other than that little scratch the detail on it is great.

I am sure there are more in the past, but I did this one just last week. Check out the back.

The reverse of a full date XF 1918-D Standing Liberty Quarter. It was deep about 10'' under a tree root and I was in too much of a hurry.

Not mine also, but a friend's wife. $10 gold out of Couer d'Alene park, 1984. I couldn't believe she came in right behind us and found it and a big screwdriver mark right across the front.

That's in Spokane, right? What kind of silver coins were you guys getting out of there in those days ? Like, how many in a day was a typical average, for silver coins back then ? And how old was the silver you were getting out of there ?

Tom, its in Idaho. We do have a Couer d'Alene park in Spokane. I forgot that when I posted. The one in Idaho is the site of Fort Sherman. We used to pull barbs, indians ,etc out of there. I found quite a few complete 45/70 bullets, sharp shooting pins and other military items. It wasn't uncommon to pull 5-10 silvers or more out in a 3 hr hunt. My friends wife that got the $10 gold piece use to pull fishys out of there like crazy, I never found one until last year. Back then she used a Tesoro Golden Sabre.
Never hunted the one in Spokane, even to this day. I think legendary Lucille Bowen and her pal Betty Weeks pretty much got the bulk of stuff in the early 70's.

I cut my teeth in the C'dA city park with my trusty ol Golden Sabre II......got my first seated coin there, merc's, barbers, V nickels, etc. Almost forgot....my one and only shield nickel that I ALMOST tossed as I thought it was a slug.....poor thing is really toasted but it's a shield. Also got a few barbies from the old Roosevelt school over in C'dA. Heard a rumor you can no longer hunt the C'dA city park...???? There has been a few gold coins from there also from what I've heard....... Also snagged a few from the old ballpark acrossed the street.....

PS..... I've only dug 5 seated coins in my 22yrs tecting and scratched the obverse of a seated 1883 dime that happened to be the best condition of all my seated stuff....fortunately I didn't get it too bad.....lol

This Barber quarter. It looks like I cut Liberty's throat. In my defense, there was an IH cent in the same hole and about 2 inches higher. While trying not to scratch the IH, I hit the quarter with my digger. I didn't know there was another coin (other than the numbers were a little off on the IH) in the hole until after I re-scanned it. The quarter was in really good condition and I hated to see that scratch.

A 1896 Barber dime. Pinpoint was off cause some other garbage in the hole. Make matters worse it was my first ever Barber.

The nicest coin that i have had a slight scratch on was a Whaddon Chase celtic gold stater 55BC about 3 years ago,as luck would have it i changed over from my usual large spade to a very small turf knife but just caught the stater on the edge, possibly the smallest of scratches going but as they are a rough hammered coin one can very finely polish it out because its gold and no one is non the wiser.

I will stress that this is not my exact coin but mine is possibly better but it will give you a indication of how critical the damage could have been on such a beautiful coin.

Was lucky that it did not damage the coin as it was on the edge, but it could have wiped alot of value of a stunning coin,i still have it in a safe pleace with my other gold coins that i have found but this one certainly is my finest and oldest especially as its just over 2000 years old,we suspect that as we have found a few others in a very close radius and i mean close this gives us a very good indication that its a hoard site

The park is open to detecting, (CDA Park ) but good luck. It has been hammered over the years and is still being hammered now. The old Roosevelt school is now a bed and breakfast, I doubt if they would let you search there. The finds dried up there while it was still a school. The old ballfield across the street from the park had fill dirt brought in years ago, doesn't seem to be any old coins within reach.
My nicest coin that I scratched wasn't a coin but a token. I was searching an old athletic field years ago with my Fisher 1280X Aquanaut (which I purchased from Harry and Lucy Bowen back in '86). I got a huge ear splitting signal in my headphones. It sounded like a shallow depth aluminum can signal. Angrily I drove my screwdriver into the ground and pulled up a dark colored token about the size of a silver dollar. It had the buffalo nickel indian on it and I had given him a big scratch across his nose ! Taught me to be more careful.

Thanks for the heads up.... I'd recently talked to a guy that tried to swing in the C'dA park and he'd been asked to leave? I considered it dried up 22yrs ago but managed some goodies when they were doing some construction on the building close to the lake (restrooms/consession booth?). The Roosevelt school was just being converted to a B&B when I hit it....got 2 barbies right where they shouldn't have been, right along side the walkway leading up to front of the building. The ballfield gave me a couple silvers but it must have been part of the original shoot range from the Fort as I remember digging LOTS of ammo casings and a few military buttons.... Always wondered about the courthouse....never did hit it. Glad this came up, it brings back memories.......

PS.... I also saw some pics (22-23yrs ago) that a C'dA private MD dealer showed me of the finds he and his buds got when they hit the water near the old amusement pier at the park......coffee cans full !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PSS.... Would you know if the ballpark behind the bank in Hayden is very old...????? Mom lives in Hayden so I get over there once in awhile.

The ballpark behind the bank in Hayden must be fairly old, it seems like its been there forever. Glad to hear you scored at the old Roosevelt school. It seemed all dried up by the time I searched it. I thought maybe no one had searched the old alley behind the school. Got a couple good signals and chipped out of the compacted dirt and gravel a '28 SLQ and a worn Merc. That was a long time ago.
Yeah, the lake by the old amusement park can put out a few goodies, but the silt, sand and bark layer is deep, difficult to get down to where the old stuff is. Lots of old iron. There was a guy named Denny Higbee years ago, he and a buddy of his did pretty good scuba diving with the Fisher Aquanauts. Difficult to find anything on the dry sand or wading in the lake, gets hit too hard and too often.

Thanks..... I also think that ballpark in Hayden has been there forever, like you...can't remember it ever not being there? Might check it out sometime when I visit mom but imagine it's been hammered just like the rest....lol
