What would you have done?

Spray only works well if you happen to be up wind of the perp.
Carrying a long handled scoop is great. I can tell you from experience that a good hit on the temple of even a drug crazed guy will put him down.
If you hunt at night make sure you have the mindset of a fighter. Make sure you are determined to survive no matter what and do what ever it takes.

If you're working a beach chances are good there's a stiff breeze blowing. Pepper spray in the wrong direction might get into your eyes instead of the attacker. A handful of sand would probably be just as effective if thrown at the eyes.
At night I carry a .25 auto. It fits in my pocket and is very light and small. Someone crazed on drugs might be able to withstand more than the average mugger, though. I'd suggest getting something I got my wife awhile ago. It's a little device that fits on a keychain and has a pull pin, like a grenade. The damn thing makes one heck of a loud siren sound. Probably enough to attract attention from people some distance away, even in a stiff breeze. You can pick them up for under $20. Good investment if you beach hunt at night. The only other thing I've ever carried was a .38 snub nose revolver with a shot shell cartridge in the first chamber. After that it's Federal Hydro Shok hollow points. If he doesn't get the message with the first the second is self defense.

Here is the deal. You have the right to defend yourself at all costs. If the guy was unarmed you can't use deadly force unless he has you in a choke hold & you feel like you are going to pass out & die. Now, he has you in a choke hold and he is saying he is going to kill you? He is fair game. If you did not have a weapon, and the bad guy did not have one but he had already grabbed me and threatened to kill me, I would have used my long handled scoop and wailed his ass. I would use it just like a PR-24 or ASP baton. I pack an LED head light and a small 2" stainless 38 snubby at night. Better safe than sorry. If the man had a club or a knife and was growling and had laid hands on me telling me he was going to kill me, he'd be in a box right now. Happily, you don't hear much of anything like that here in Va Beach though. I hunted many nights the last 2 years and never had a problem. The people who say that spray does not work on crazy people are correct if it is Mace. If you cary OC pepper spray, it works on everyone as well as dogs (Jaws-with-Paws)as long as it has a high amount of OC (Oleoresin Capsaican). Even a raving drug fazed lunatic can't keep his eyes open with a direct blast of strong OC to the face. It will stop them just long enough for you to make your getaway.
Stay Safe and Happy Hunting!
