im new to the ctx yesterday was my first time using it i tried gonehuntings combined mode with the open screen the place i am hunting has been there since the late 1700"s there is alot of iron crap like nails i would get a pretty good repeatable signal in between iron even at a 90 degree turn it would show a iron target and a good target like 11 or 12 42 or 44 i would dig and only find nails but no good targets i would rescan the hole and not get any signal this happend several times you guys got any ideas and if you could share your patterns and settings it would be helpfull thx

Being that you are new to the CTX I would guess that your pretty good signals are also rusty iron. Even with the CTX it still takes some time to be able to distingquish those very rusty pieces of iron that sound and ID close to being a good target. More hours with the CTX and it will start to make sence.

GO TO RESOURCE FORUM! There is a video there on IDing nails.

yeah i have watched that video before i got the ctx my signal wasnt moving in different spots it was in the same spot i know im new to this machine and that its not a etrac but i did alot of detecting with the etrac and i always used open screen in 2 tone ferrous and did pretty good with it but what i dont understand is why it was also showing a good target and it was staying on those numbers and the crosshair was solid red but there was no good target in the hole. im going out again today guess i just need more time with it i will post if i find anything good

These are the two disc patterns and the tone settings that I have been using for a while. I normally use Pattern2, but if trash is too bad will use Pattern1. These disc. and tone patterns have been tweaked a lot over the last few months. For me, the most important part (and the area that received the most tweaking), was getting the target bin widths and the hz sounds, that I like the best for each bin, set......HH

Bradley, check your inbox.

If you have the sense cranked up and swinging too fast, you can get false high tones off the end of a nail or piece of wire, you can usually see the iron and hear a null in there too. Swing slower in those conditions.

I just added Gone Huntings program to my XChange2 the other day. I haven't loaded it on the ctx yet though to try. I would like to get some more myself to try out.

thx guys i did better today i will make a new post of what i found i had it in auto plus 3 and i think i was getting alot of falsing so i turned it down to just plain auto and i was finding coins everywhere lol i didnt get to go for very long today but i think i did ok for what time i had keep posting the patterns and settings i will defenitly give them a try

Sure, what do you want to know that is not shown here?

Larry, can you explain why you chose that particular discrimination pattern in your "Coins" program?

Thanks.

Nolan

Went out today for my fourth hunt with the CTX. Kind of discouraging. No silver again. We hit about 5 older parks. Got one wheat at about 4", about 16 clad dimes, 1 nickel, bunch of memorials and 6 clad quarters. Anyone have any advice? I'm running gonehuntings combined settings and auto +1 and also the default coin. Having a little difficulty understanding target trac. I'm new to minelab, no experience what so ever. Feel pretty good using my MXT and AT Pro.

if i was you i would give gonehuntings combined mode a try its an all open screen and set it up for the iron to be a low tone and the targets your looking for to be a high tone just ignore the low grunts and pay attention to theclear high tones and make sure to turn 90 degrees when you get a good tone if it sounds good both ways then its probably a good target im not a expert by any means but i used the etrac sorta like that 2 tone ferrous and now i have the ctx and i use gh"s combined mode and it seems to be working good for me the first day i didnt have a good day because i had my sensitivity set to high and was getting alot of falsing now i have it in just plain auto and its doing alot better but there is alot of guys on here that know alot more about this machine then i do so maybe they can give you some advise im sure you will get the hang of it soon

Nolan, "Coins" is just what I started out with and I now call it No Iron/Foil. This is my "hunt it all program", except water hunting. 1 FE, CO 49, 50 is rejected to help prevent iron wrap and I have 10-14 FE- CO9 selected to reject small foil. The iron reject is what I have settled on after trying several different patterns to just reject most small iron like nails yet hear the big iron.

As Gatekeeper has me pegged, I've been hunting for 30 years and have developed an ear to listen to what is in the ground and I dig what sounds good to me. That is why I like to hunt with a pretty open pattern. This is just my personal preference and you can reject as much as you want without losing too much, if any depth. The discrimination pattern is essentially one big 1,750 position notch filter and you are still hunting in discrimination mode whether you have none or all squares rejected.

Don't be afraid to modify the pattern to your own likes and needs, this is just what I like to use.

Sparkster- Hang in there. Silver's hard to find! I promise if you put your coil over it the CTX will hit it. I don't find silver at parks very often where I live. The two or three parks that are old enough to hold silver in my area are pounded. I'm not sayin it ain't there, I'm just sayin it's not as prevalent as it was. The fact that you only found one wheat tells me that your park has probably been hit pretty hard. I usually find one silver for every 5-10 wheats depending on the site. Get yourself on some private property. Try some houses that were built before the late 50's. Keep it low and swing it slow. Remember multidirectional, audible (NOT VISUAL... that comes into play later) consistency is what you're after. I don't usually recommend doing what I'm about to tell you but if you absolutely must have silver quickly before you go insane... Pass on the shallow targets 5" and under. That being said... I've literally found Mercs baking in the sun. The odds are in your favor after that 5" mark though. Good luck! We want pics!
