Cobra Beach Magnet Metal Detector with 10" Open Cobra Max Search Coil

Viper Trident Metal Detector with 10" Search Coil

Do you mean "Which of the two has the best holding power as a boat anchor"?

Seriously, this is one area of the hobby where you just can't go with a cheap detector. Spend a little more, get a real machine and save yourself a lot of banging your head against a brick wall.:rage:

Hi Joe; Check out the Excal, The Whites, The Fisher etc., Do yourself that favor OK?? I don't think your into head banging. :rage: :biteme: :yikes:  Just kidding there. Anyway, Also join a local detecting Club if possible. We here are more than glad to help you out here but we can't tbe there in person. bdahnter told you the truth. "FORGET THEM" go with the flow in this one ok. Bad joke I know. Leave me alone I'm on a roll !!!!!! Also go to the beaches and actually talk to the guys. We don't bite I promise.!!!! :detecting: Anyway good luck. Keep posting your questions here and don't forget to post your find pictures OK. Best Wishes. PEACE:RONB

All the years it has taken company's like kellyco to build there reputations, i have never understood why they want to trash there image by selling cheap rubbish detectors. listen to what the others have posted and stay well clear!

I actually asked that question of the Kellyco PR person and the response was that there is a market niche for people that just want to get out on the beach and swing for very little money. To that market segment the Beach Cobra/Viper is a perfect match - if they find a few coins and the ocassional piece of junk jewellery in the dry sand then they are happy.
At least they are getting their butts off the couch and getting some fresh air and some exercise. For anyone who considers themselves serious about surf pirating it is a nonstarter but there are all kinds and Kellyco sells to all kinds.

Go Figure,

If your on a tight budget the Head Hunter series might be a start.I never had one but some like them but.
Warning ! You did not say Fresh or Salt water big difference most will do OK in fresh but salt with heavy black sand
can even give some of the better water machines a problem . Find out what the locals are using

The beach, especially saltwater beaches, are extremely harsh environments for any kind of electronic equipment. There are numerous top of the line detectors that are awsome machines for land hunting but that are totally out of their league for beach-surf hunting. Spend some time reading this forum and you will see a trend of what detectors the successful hunters are using. They use these machines for a reason. Yes they are expensive but can, and usually do, pay for themselves very quickly. But you will have to pay your dues, both in equipment and in time learning, for this to happen. Heed the advice the guys on here give you and you will soon be on your way to sharing in the excitement of the finding the loot. --Jerry

Hi Joe; I hope this info helps you. Just one pointer: KellyCo is a good company that sells great stuff you just need to know what your buying ok.?? By the way there is a BIG difference in either the Freshwater or Salt water detectors so please listen to the guys on this pointer. Also most "good" detectors do a really good job in the low tide mud flat areas in blocking out the salt and iron junk and still getting the coins, rings etc.. Anyway good luck and keep us posted ok. PEACE:RONB :detecting:

Don't forget that used is sometimes OK. I have purchased four water machines through this forum. 3 of them were water machines and all three were perfect. It's a risk, but if you buy one from one of the major manufacturers chances are they are still fine, unless you run into one that has been really abused and is being sold by a dishonest person. Tesoro has a lifetime warranty and Tesoro seems to always fix them even if you are the 10th owner. They are not as good in the mineralized sand as some of the others.

Provide some more details about when and where you are going to use it and you might get some better answers. Best bet is to read what the experiences have been from the others on this forum who are the field test experts. Jim

Wow...... Thanks guys.....
It's to my amazment that you knew that I was looking at kellco.. how did you know?
And that they where doing a deal on them.. and for some reason I had to ask the question... good thing I did...

I already have one in mine.. but was looking at the deals to getting soemthing else cheap..is it worth it or should I just stay away from it.. and save the money for something else...? Can you tell I'm new to all this.. I do plan to do this more then once.. way more...

And fresh water sorry about that.. I'm in the Chicago area Lake Michigan you know..
X-Terra 505 Metal Detector with 9" (7.5kHz) Search Coil is the one I'm looking to buy.. from them.. but I'm worried.. will it disappoint me after awhile or not

I'm low on income.. after 2 heart attacks... need to walk.. so this will get me to walk.. hee hee

Thank guys... I'm glad to be here

Joe better your hunting a lake The surf can beet you around .
Re post a thread on Lake Michigan hunters if i recall from what i have read it is heavily mineralized
so the right detector is needed HH Mike

I likem ok, but those two pieces of crap should never been in the line up of metal detectors.................one buys one and finds out.................never going back again, to me it is the worst adverstising they could ever have done.............but what do i know......................u listening JW.

joe...........u have toooo many choices...............u need to loose your train of thought on the xterras.............good machines and they might be good for freshwater beaches, but there are better ones.

think along the lines of what u will or have herad on this forum.

minelab GT's..........excaliburs..........white's..................like bda said............tiger shark............great freshwater heater..................fisher

are u actually going to get wet or just kinda shallow hunting up your way?

Hi JW; I hope you are feeling better now. I also hope you are listening to what these guys are telling you."FORGET THEM". You can get a "good" freshwater detector for cheap. We even have a Forum dedicated to buying and selling used detectors. If you have had 2 heart attacks you don't want "any" extra stress especially when your just trying to have fun and get healthier right??? A used Whites SurfMaster or BeachMaster ID will fill the bill for you and Whites backs their detectors almost carte - blanche so to speak. I "KNOW" they are good, solid detectors as well.Fisher is another great detector series as well. I do not know about the other ones so I can not speak for or against them ok. I hope this helps and that you get even better quickly.Until later may God bless you and yours. PEACE:RONB
  :whites:

You guys are wonderful.... I'm sooo glad that I found you here.... you are a blessing that I know that for sure... and there is way to many choices you are right on that count... I'm wanting to make the right choice.. sure I might be new to it.. but I can tell you if it doesn't work the way I want I will know it very soon.. I'm into computers and catch on very quick and without a manual.. it's a gift.
You are sooo right that I do not need the stress... and now I'm not sure where to go... so confused...

I will be doing mostly land.. and every once in awhile go to the lake in Micheigan.. and I'm not talking about Lake Michigan.. it's I believe Indian Lake. There is no beach at these.. but there is a area that you can take your boat... and tie it down and swim in shallow water... I know that there is a treasure there waiting for me to pick... It's amazing how people wear things and don't think to take it off before going into the water.. and end up loosing it.. and once it hits that water... it's gone..

I'm listening to you...all and watching... I know to stay way from those that I mentioned before.. got it! So do I stay way from Kellyco company? who do I go with.. I need models to choose from... help a dumb guy that wants to invest in something that I will be happy with.. I'm so scared now.. and don't know what to do/ I know that I'm getting off supject here.. but I'm soo new to this.. help and please forgive me of getting off suject in this forum.. I've been told that by my wife.. that I can invest in one.. and hope to find enough stuff to pay for it.. I have about 6 to 700.00 to invest.. if that helps.. UGH!! I'm 44 and sooo confused....

Thank you and god bless you all.....
by the way I'm going to love to find a class ring for someone and give it back to them... I lost a class ring.. and know where about at.. it's I'm sure under concete now..
