Andy --
Basically, I agree with you.
Please understand that I'm not trying to "start an argument" either. Not by any stretch. My "style," so to speak, is to enjoy "debate." NOT necessarily to "win," but in my mind, when two people really dig into the details and scrutinize points, in a "back and forth" discussion, very often an education ensues, as a result. Sometimes, this "education" occurs for one or the other of the "debaters," but OFTEN, it instead happens for a few of the folks on the sidelines who are observing. And to me, that's what many of us are here for, to learn. At least, I am...
Really, that was the whole point of my post -- to scrutinize some of the finer details, and maybe something useful for someone would flow out of the discussion.
I TOTALLY agree that as soon as the Equinox comes out, we are going to hear lots of "this machine is magic and it's finding things way better than my other machine," just like we will hear some "this thing is crap, all I'm digging is junk, Minelab lied to me!" Neither of those knee-jerk reactions are very helpful.
As AJ said, the truth will likely be in the middle, and I'd think it won't be particularly hard to discern the "well-reasoned and fair" commentaries from the nonsense. Finally, as most have said, all of this talk is largely "hot air" anyway, until the machines are released. BUT -- what are forums for, if not "talking about detectors and detecting?!!" Gotta do something to pass the time, especially in the winter when the weather is often not so conducive to actual detecting...
Cheers!
Steve

Look I am not trying to start an argument or question posts but in looking at the various forums catering to one specific machine or another, as soon as a new detector comes out people post finds that make it seem that the detector is the "cat's meow". In some cases I have contacted the poster and found out that the targets were not that deep and not in high trash areas. Also, when someone says they went to a worked out park I also have to pause as many of my better finds of late come from these areas.
The Equinox will be a solid performer but will it make all other single frequency VLF detectors obsolete? There is a market for low-to-mid range detectors so detectors such as the E-Trac and CTX 3030 among other high end units did not make them obsolete.
We all use what works for us and there are times when I grab a sub-$400 detector and at other times, one that costs 10X that . . . . . no different than fishing, golf, . . . pick your poison. If the detector works for you in your area and for your applications, then that is the right detector for you . . . . . hence the wide range of choices that are out there in this relatively small niche hobby.
We all need to take a deep breath and wait for units to be delivered to actual users to see what the consensus is
