I think location trumps machines, coils and all the rest. I think almost all the very limited number of silvers I have found I could have hit easily with my Silver uMax but something about swinging the Explorer seems to boost my confidence more? Dunno. Then I've tried some older spots gridding and moving very slowly only to find modern canslaw and pulltabs. I've yet to dig any 10-12" deep silver coins.
I think so too. Some sites aren't very "detector friendly" with EMI,underground utilities, nasty soil, lots of trash....a weird thing I'll bring up again though....
I have found, and laugh if you must, that A CERTAIN TIME OF DAY is best for detecting. I have noticed this on more than one occasion, and in fact enough times to really take notice. In the late afternoon as the sun just sets...dusk...things seem to smooth out and both of my machines, which are way different, operate just plain better. This happened TWICE this past weekend at two different sites 15 miles away from each other. A friend and I were at a school yard and hunted for 3 hours with not much luck. As soon as the clouds moved in and the sun was setting we started hitting 6-8" deep wheats,we wound up with a total of 6. At this same school last year the same thing happened and I dug 3 silver coins in a row from an area we have gone over numerous times from all directions. I was stunned! Then yesterday I was at the park I hunt every day it's not raining,it's my "before work" park. Being off yesterday I hunted a large town in the morning and early afternoon. Not much but clad. I then went to this park and as the sun was just setting,I dug a 47 Rosie. Then about 45 minutes later a 37 Merc. I've hunted this particular area so much it's stupid, but once in awhile a silver pops out, yesterday it was two. I have found ALL of them at dusk.
Exactly why this is,I can't say. All I can relate is my experience, and the results. I now have a Streamlight headlamp for night hunting,I'm going to do more and see where that goes. I do believe location and conditions are the most important factor as to why one can or can't make finds. But we will always try,as others have since the inception of detecting.
