What is the best "sleeper" machine?

Excellent responses everyone. I think this is a post that is providing a lot of insight to machines that perhaps some have never even heard of!!

I wonder if he could customize a machine to my ground conditions and optimize it for relics...

I bet he could.

Another vote for the Minelab Sovereign. It's the only machine I've sold that I now wish I kept. Fortunately they regularly come up for sale. Only problem: I've limited my arsenal to ONE detector to keep peace with the Wifey.

Crazyman has the right idea in a Wilson but the older Wilson Coin and Relic in my opinion was the best, Troys X-5 is another as it can handle any situation except perhaps underwater hunting . Both are made well and go deep but again not made anymore so one would have to find a good used one....

Wilson is still being made but most of his sales are overseas..I feel Coin and relic 4 no longer made and an older version is no longer made but feel it was a better unit
ergomomic wise, cosmetically wise and went deeper than newer models...

I had a Vaquero for a short time but returned it.
Funny people think the Tesoros are sleeper machines. I hear about them all
the time. They are VERY well know. I used the machine and it was ok but just
not what I wanted. I also hear about the Silver Umax and Compadre with great
frequency.

If you bought yourself the DeLeon you probably got yourself a decent detector.
I don't know how it pinpoints though. I prefer the VCO pinpont like the Ace 250 or the Whites MXT.

Good luck with your machine and be sure to post some of your finds.
What part of the country do you live in?

I noticed a few people mentioned the GC-1023. I see 'em all the time at the Tuesday Morning stores. Don't know much about them but I did buy a GC-1020 last fall at a junk shop near Lake of the Ozarks. Hard to pass up any detector with LCD TID for 50 bucks. Depth is OK but I really haven't used it enough to judge recovery speed. Kind of hard to when there's a Cointrax and a BH 3300 sittin' right next to it. I keep it and a BH Jr. around for others interested in the hobby. Judging from the looks of some of their other models I suspect they're reverse-engineering name brand machines.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Everytime I get the phone call 'Theres ANOTHER box on the porch that the UPS guy dropped off !" I just say...'SORRY !"

Still, will be selling a few off to get what I think may be a sleeper...a Baron Coin Trax II.

Really... how many pair of shoes does she have?

You NEED more than one detector.

I'm not sure I'd classify the Cointrax II as a sleeper. Its depth and features are well known. Once you've gotten past the learning curve, which is steep but not as complicated as you might think, you'll have an instrument in your hands that will go as deep and tell you at least as much about the target as any machine out there.

The original post had stated

"One that not a lot of people talk about but you find it is a great machine hence "sleeper" in the title of this post."

There is rarely talk of the Discovery machines on the forums...heck, it doesn't even have a forum section like the others ( unless there is one and I totally missed it !).

So, consequently I had put the Cointrax II as my sleeper since not a lot of people talk about it and I am very interested in getting one.

I personally have never used one, but from reading JB's forum and looking at all the features and what the machine can do, I am going to get one.

I know there is a pretty good learning curve so maybe I can get some pointers from you in the future !

Judjing by that definition and by how much I gave for mine ($20 at a garage sale) It's definitely a sleeper. Feel free to ask any question either here on over on the Discovery forum.
