What is the best "sleeper" machine?

One that not a lot of people talk about but you find it is a great machine hence "sleeper" in the title of this post.

Any of the DetectorPro units. I prefer the Wader as I can use in on dry land, at the beach, wet sand and in the surf and not have to worry about it. Most people think these are just toys and sluff them off as junk. That's too bad because they don't know what they are missing. These are really fine machines.

I'll vote for the QXT. Always found it to be one of the deepest coin shooters on the market. Deeper and much faster than an XLT, but most people opted for those as they were White's flagship detector. Only machines I've used that went deeper in the field were the Minelabs, though I didn't think the Explorer had more depth on silver from what I saw. It did, however, hit deeper on other metals than the QXT. If they made a 12" double D for this machine I'd bet it would give anything on the market today a run for their money on deep silver/copper. As it is with the 9.5" coil I found it as deep on copper/silver as just about any other machine using the same size coil.

The Wilson Coin Select. This is one you don't see very often even though it's still being made today. Excellent performance on both land and beach. Very deep and fast with great iron rejection. It's made here in the U.S. but is more popular in Europe.

Paul Wilson of Wilson Electronics in South Bend, Indiana. Wilson detectors have actually been around for a number of years.

I have to agree with Critterhunter on the Quantum. I had great luck with mine found many 8 inch coins. Another Whites unit that I had success with was an IDX pro with Mr. Bill's mods. I wish I had that unit back. Steve if you are reading this! With both of these detectors, I never felt that I was under powered when it came to depth and accuracy. R.L.

The c-scope cs3mx.This is a very basic detector with outstanding performance......two knobs, one for discrim, the other for sensitivity and a pinpoint button.Runs at 17khz,is lightweight but almost bombproof, runs on 8aa batteries that give around 40 hours use and is awesome in the trash. The one downside is that the coil is hotwired into the box so you are stuck with one coil,an 8" polo coil.Cheap too.

Best bang for the buck is not what I am talking about, I want to hear about machines that a lot of people don't talk about. For instance, I find the Omega 8000 a terrific machine but you really don't hear much about them.

You hear about the ace 250 all the time. It is a great machine (I have one myself) but it is well known.

Cost is not in question here. I just want to know if people think there are machines out there that are terrific and you wonder why you don't hear about them. Even older machines can be included.

Are they a "best kept secret" or what?

Just off the thought that has ran through my mind before would be the Compadre and Silver uMax. That's only because I had always passed and not payed not much attention to them all the times visiting the local dealer. Then while I was there once, a customer returned a rented Compadre to find a ring he had lost. He found the ring and had rented the Compadre just that afternoon. The dealer said it's a good little machine. Later I got to reading some good stuff about it here on Findmall and other Internet sites. While doing so, I was reading some good on the Silver too. So, next visit to the dealer I bought them. Starting with the Compadre, it just didn't look right. Some say it's like a toy as far as looks. Well it surprised me on the power it actually had and I was finding goods. Had the same experience with the Silver. They are actually quality and effective. I just never had interest in them before. The looks and price point just didn't catch my back then. I have a few others but the little Tesoro's had crossed my mind as sleeper machines.

Yes I am finding out that most of the Tesoro line is a sleeper line. I finally got a Deleon but only got about an hour on it before the snow hit us.

I've never owned one, but I don't recall ever reading a negative post of the Minelab Musketeer Advantage in my years of following these forums. It's not talked about much, but that's probably because it doesn't have its own forum, and because people assume it's not all that great since it's not as expensive as the top-end Minelabs.

Come to think about it, for years I didn't know about the Tesoro detectors. When I found out about Tesoro, I started asking other friends then about the Tesoro's, and they didn't know anything about them. So I had laid off about Tesoro for some time. Just a few months ago I ran into a fella that was detecting and we got to yapping. When I got to mention something about Tesoro, he had a funny look for a moment and said something along the line of "I think I heard of that brand before". He responded about White's, Garrett and Bounty Hunter. I guess he don't belong to a detecting club, read MD magazines, or surf the Internet. When I added something about Minelab and Fisher, he had that puzzled look - deer in the headlight look. I had figured then it was best to talk about detecting and not detectors.
I didn't back up about the Jasco, Nauts, Red Baron and such or open any discussion about TR, BFO etc. And I thought I was behind

Mention the Compadre, Silver umax or Eldorado umax, and Bandido II umax among others, around any loyal Tesoro user and you will get a nod from a user that doesn't care if others hadn't heard or know anything about the Tesoro line. They may look like toys to some, but they can produce.

A mouth full but... The best all around detector I've seen, when you can find one is a "Big Bud Pro Select 220-D" D only. a multi-tone digital I.D. detector, bought out by Bounty Hunter, I believe. Uses 2 9volt batts and is very light. One went for around $150.00 on E-bay not long ago. Was made in the mid '90's. When I go out on distant hunts, I'll take a Compadre or a Lobo ST, but the Big Bud always gets tossed in the car too  Wow look at the clock...........Good night folks :sadwalk:

Doesn't work that way. Any true sleeper will also be very popular. There are little known detectors that may impress you or a few others, but any detector that is truly a sleeper will rise to the top of popularity on its own.

Best performance and popular in Europe. Must be why the U.K. importer closed down and the only other dealer with one (Staffordshire Detectors) took about two years to sell it.
I've never seen one in use in Britain, France or Germany. There's a few in Italy at least and the only dealer who imports them that I know of.

The now very old Coin and Relic had a period of popularity years back as it was better than many single frequency machines on the wet sand but no where near P.I. or twin/multifrequency performance and the Wilson ATD had quite a few fans but the Coin Select never really cut it.
