It looks like the mystery was solved. Nice work! The handle could have easily been 4 3/4 inches, and the brass ring is consistent. It makes complete sense that it was in the surf because surf fisherman frequent the area. There were shells inside of it, so I think it was out there for a while.

Truth is, I was sort of hoping that it was from an old ship, held by a mariner a few hundred years ago! Nonetheless, it is great to find out what it really is!

The search goes on!
