Here it is. I found this object in the surf yesterday using my Excal 800. What is it? It is made of brass and wood. The end of the brass cap has a slit in it? How old do you think it is? I am keeping it in fresh water to desalinate it and plan on preserving it.

Many thanks to Mick, bdahunter, and GaryL for advice on reducing the picture size.

Thanks,

Surfline

You're welcome. Man, I have no idea what that thing is. The brass may be a bolster off of ??? And the wood maybe a handle. Let's see what the others say.

Surfline I haven't a clue as to what it is, but the picture sure turned out nice. If you have a College close by if they have an archaeological Dept. they can date the wood and maybe give you some ideal as to what you have. They will more than likely want to know where you found it. Good luck.and HH

I was just wondering if it is an old paint brush or shaving brush perhaps?, if there is a slit in the end then it may have contained bristles before it started to disintergrate.HH regards Nugget.:ausflag:

Looks like it was some kind of pole at one time.
Don't laugh, I tried to work the picture some in MS Paint to give it a more what-it-might-have-looked-like-appearance.

Here is the 3D pic. I like the suggestion that it could have been a rod with a brass cap that held bristles, either a shaving brush or paint brush. I will do some searching on the web.

Thanks for all of the input.

I haven't heard anything new from the forum. The paint brushes I looked at had a wider metal section to hold the bristles and the shaving cream brushes were small, something that would fit in the palm of a hand.

The object is not cylindrical, it is more like an ellipse, so I do not think it is a small paint brush either. The hunt goes on....

Let me throw out a guess (WAG)...How about a file handle or a handle for a putty knife or chisel...

The more I look at it the more it looks like a knife handle. The blade is the type that has a tang that went up inside the slit. The elliptical shape is right and the brass is consistent with the bolster of a knife. I'll stand on that guess...LOL

Mick, I think you got it! I had a colleague look at it and the first thing he said was "That was a knife!" Well done!

How old do you think it is?

That's a tough one. Wood can rot pretty quickly depending on the conditions. I'm surprised the wood is still attached to the brass bolster. Is there a pin holding it in place? Without seeing the whole thing blade and all I wouldn't even venture a guess. Thanks for sharing and all the guessing was really fun.

It looks like an old Rapala filet knife. Take a look at the photo. It's the only one I can think of that has a brass ring. They have one with a 4 3/4 inch handle and a six inch blade that seems to fit the description.
