What is different about Excaliber?

I certainly agree with Mike on all that he has said. You may have failed to point out that we have to replace the Excal shaft with a straight shaft. You would think ML would accommodate use a little bit.

Yeah, I did that...straight shaft = good. Still not joining "The Excal Hater's Club" however.

UK Brian,

Not every person on the beach metal detects. At least not her in the U.S. And of the people that do detect on the beach, not all of them use the Excalibur. So if you are finding coins whenever you come to this side of the pond, great! More power to you.

Most of the Excalibur users, after they learned their machine, will do fine. It is not absolutely necessary to change out the headphones or the coil. Some prefer the way they come, and others may decide to change only the coil, and others may only want to change the headphones. There are even still others that don't use the Excalibur.

As I was saying about Excalibur users learning their machines. There is no need to dig every little null, but checking them to make sure they are true nulls causes for less frustration digging up iron. That is a plus. It seems that the machine may not have had any changes made to it since its conception, but are you sure about that? Maybe something was changed. Maybe you are right and nothing has been changed. If nothing has changed, doesn't that prove the design is good?

People say the Excalibur is the same as the Sovereigns. I think it lies in only a few of the key components, but I don't think they are the same machine. They may act similar, but packaged completely different. One difference I can name for sure is very petty, but might be a real difference. The Sovereign has a foil wrap around the electronics to help aid against interference. The Excalibur doesn't have that.

Some other people say the Fisher 1280X and the HeadHunter Wader/Diver are of the same design. Maybe they are, but some prefer one over the other and not because of the weight.

Bottom line is that the people who like the Excalibur machine itself, like it because it works very well. If you don't like it because Minelab didn't put out a press report about any changes made to it from the beginning, then don't use it.

Be sure to continue digging deep for little pieces of rusted iron your pulse machine finds for you and put them in your pouch, as us Excalibur users will probably pass on those.

Thank you for your time.

If you return to the original post by Alton he ask's about the Excaliber/Explorer and Sovereign. Which has most depth/performance. The answer between the Sovereigns and Excaliber is the Sovereign, and there are so many on the second hand market anyone can afford one. If you live in the water then you do need some form of waterproofing and have a choice of spending out on a new u/w machine or converting or buying a converted land machine. I've seem at least three Aqua Explorers on the West coast, many more converted Sovereign's and these people are getting real results.
My (straight shaft, remote mode change Sovereign) also has TWO foil shields and a secondary Pre Amp which allows the best performance from its third party coils. Result is its deeper on the wet sand than Excaliber or Explorers (still not as deep as one of my P.I.'s)
The Headhunter by the way is a development from the 1280x. Difference is the Headhunter is now better able to cope with the salt effect that forces a reduction in the sensitivity of the Fisher.
Try making a living from metal detecting and you find you need the best from which ever source.

Hello,
For you the latest version of the Sovereign is the GT?
What do you think about the performance between Elite VS GT?
Thanks.
I see from your comments that you consider that nothing sinks deep on the dry sand ("even a Treasure Ace will do"). Try a top land machine and knock the discrimination right down and you'll be shocked at what your missing.
It is right, if you have many targets and some layers of thin black sand, the Minelab (try with a Sovereign GT and Explorer XS) is not the best, (with the Explorer XS in all metal it is not to bad), an other guy with a Adventis Xp metal detector found many more than me on the same area.

I've got a French made internal Pre Amp but you can get a Bulgarian version thats external for about $100. Its called the Super Power Penetrator and they clain 20-30% depth increase. I get about 25%.

Thanks for the information, I remenber in the PROSPECTIONS French catalog
(at VERRIERES-LE-BUISSON), they sold (maybe always) a pre-amp that you plug on the micro jack. What is the name of the french compagny?
Thanks
