what is best way to set up my 250

once I get it and start to hunt, how do I know which mode to use such as jewelry, coin mode etc......and what other settings am I gonna need to know?

The DVD says to start out in the all metal mode. I suggest start in the coin mode at 5 bars of sensitivity. Start in your own yard or tot lot. Dig only repeatable beeps at first. Once you get the hang of it graduate to the jewelry mode.

I think all metal mode will teach you how to identify good and bad. Dig everything.

Then, when you feel like you understand the different tones, try coin or jewelry!

Good luck!

When I started with the All metal, I'd switch over to the coin mode and run the coil over the target again. If it gave me a good signal It usually WAS a coin, but you still want to dig everything.

what about foil? does it tell you if it is foil? I remember when I had my whites coinmaster I found lots of foil  and it had a setting to discriminate for it

also Khouse said above about setting it at 5 bars of sensitivity, can someone explain about that one. Or am I jumping the gun and should just wait to get the DVD and let it explain everything?

To many things happening at once can confuse a newbie. Keep it simple at first and get to know your detector. In anything you learn, you take it in steps. When you learned to walk, you took it one step at a time. When you felt secure, you moved a little quicker. You didn't start off running.

Depending on the situation, I might start out the sensitivity at 3 bars then work up if conditions allow it.

If you're new set it to "coins" mode and set the sensitivity on four bars. As time passes and you learn more about your machine you can play with the other settings. This way you'll get more bang for the buck and won't get discouraged so easily.

The 250 is very sensitive and if you set the sensitivity to high you'll get a lot of falseing and pick up all the junk in the ground plus the mineralization. As was stated, practice your skills in bark chip playgrounds and tot lots until you get the hang of it all. Keep your sensitivity at four bars to start with. If you get a foil reading dig it as most gold falls into that range.

Do not depend entirely on the display readings to determine whether you dig or not as no detector ID is 100% accurate.

Also - if you hunt in the coin mode and get good. Then set the detector to jewelry mode and rehunt your same sites. This will make them like new again!

All metal will drive a newbie crazy. Start with coin, 4 bars. Itf you get a lot of falsing, drop to 3. IMHO

Jewelry mode will also pick up coins.
I usually hunt at factory present sensitivity. I don't get
much falseing so I usually keep my
sensitivity at 6. Sometimes I run it full blast if ground conditions allow.

What I'll do is when I get a solid good signal in Jewelry mode, I'll switch
on the Coin mode to see if I get the same signal. If I do its
probably a coin. If I don't get a signal I can decide if I want to dig or
not. Usually I'll dig because I could be missing a god ring.

The Ace gives you those options.

Have fun.

Its where the machine says you have a target but ITS NOT THERE when you dig.
You probably have the sensitivity too high for the ground conditions. Back off the sensititity.
It will happen to you probably.

great info thanks...

I can only run 4 bars of sens and then I start getting falsing. 3 at the beach. The sens depends on how much minerals are in your soil.

Hey-if you wanna get a real thrill-set it in the relic mode. You're not worried about small nails and iron and your nickel count will improve as well as your depth as sometimes when the outside edge of the coil goes over a nickel it will actually give an iron or low foil tone-just enough so you will go back over the target and when centered nearer the middle of the coil jump to nickel. It also tends to "see" more coins next to iron, etc. You've already got the id so if it's not too trashy I think you'll love this mode-it's awesommmmme

I am waiting for the thaw here in upstate NY so I took advantage of watching the DVD twice so far. I am also waiting for the stock replacement coil as apparently a bad one slipped by quality control, great Customer service though they are sending a new one out right away! I am amazed how simple this Ace 250 seems. I was already able to distinguish the different sounds, now I just need to apply it in the field. I would suggest to watch the DVD at least a few times before hitting the dirt. Lots of good advice here, thanks to all!
